This is a nice straight-forward and short module in the Border Kingdoms, although more combat-heavy (the group of the bandits together are a good challenge for a T1 party), with a small moral choice (saving or killing the bandits).

From a structural perspective, the split between episodes 1 and 2 doesn't make much sense: the box text in episode 1 leads into episode 2, but players won't learn the rest of the info in episode 1 until after the fight in episode 2. It seems like these episodes should either be merged together, or even have their order swapped.

While I enjoyed the downtime activity, players seemed a bit annoyed: with a cost of 180 DT, it isn't at all feasible until T3 (and is only mildly cheaper than the base 250 DT option always available). The only similarly-expensive downtime activities I'm aware of are in T4 modules where players might have enough downtime.

Also, one point of confusion: the module is written for S8, but mentions "special rewards" of diamonds that it's not able to give.

I'd say it was a great little adventure with no bonus objectives except it took us 3.5 hours to earn 2 ACPs/TPs at my local game store. Still, well worth it and fun was had by all.

It was sooooo nice to have some box text in the call to action. I placed the party at a table next to where Brini started threatening the brigands. When it (of course) degenerated into a brawl I had the owner stress there was to be no killing then the party very effectively indimidated the brigands to give up their information--no grindy fight.

The party snuck all around the ruins and cast Speak With Animals on the dogs, which was awesome! In the first fight, I had 4 at the table and added 1 ghoul (so, 1 per player) but not the ghast. I was saving the ghast for an ambush in the final fight but then one of the characters climbed down the cistern for some crazy reason and walked right into it. He climbed out without killing the moster so I could use him as planned.

They talked Jack and his crew into opening the door at the end and planned to ambush them. Brini was invisible the whole time and I only planned to use him if things went bad for the party. Of course the the Archer Ranger backed way out of the room and was in perfect position for the ghast ambush from behind--I love getting the ranged attackers from behind! It was a fun fight and I was able to keep Brini out of it.

Don't forget this is Season 8 contect so the DM Reward includes First Timer!

The "Call to Action" section at the start feels rather truncated; it feels like it could be merged into the next section ("The Brawl") with little impact to the module. Unlike with Into the Border Kingdoms, only the motivations of the client and the goons they're trying to arrest in the tavern are given in this section, and even then it's purely in the context of the module - everyone else in the Swollen Goat are pretty much background characters. This does (and might have been intended to) speed things into action quickly, which helps save time for the final section ("Subterranean Blues"), where we finally get to hunt down Cutter Jack. And you might very well need the extra time, if the players or DM lack experience.

The ruined keep that is Cutter Jack's base is a nasty place, especially with its new residents. It is entirely possible for things to degrade into a mass melee between the party, Cutter Jack's gang and the slavering pack of ghouls (who simply want to have everybody for dinner), which will drag things out (this is why we need the extra time).

This is a straight-forward, no nonsense adventure. Two solid hours and a good story. The rewards are ample and fun. My only complaint is that there are no options for extending this adventure past 2 hours. No potential bonus objectives. On the plus-side, this module is only $2.99. A fair trade-off I suppose.
