The party is hired by a mercantile matriarch (and generally Cool Old Lady) to catch those responsible for despoiling her granaries. As they capture the raiders and bring their bodies in for investigation, they discover the manipulations of darker powers behind the scenes...

The module transitions smoothly from the granary counter-raid, to the post-mortem at the church (where the dark powers rear their heads), to the finale in the ancient monastery and the reveal. The combats are well thought out, with the raiders in particular having effective, magically enabled tactics.

A strong introductory module, with a great hook for future modules.

I recently ran CCC-GHC-BK1-02 at a tabletop convention and my players and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's basic structure is simple:

  • You are hired and or implored to aid a House in defence of their lands and provided with some contenteous information.
  • You take part in said defence.
  • You follow clues from that defence to the origin of the attack and uncover additional information about the broader circumstances in the Border Kingdom's.

The encounters are well designed, though, the defence encounter can be very problematic for parties that lack range. Particularly if you follow the modules tactical suggestions on what to the enemy Wizards do! The further 'dungeon crawl' leads to a pretty straight up encounter that has some amazing potential if your players choose to explore it. This module uses one of the most interesting monster in the Monster Manual as a plot piece, and it works out wonderfully if properly utilised.

I would recommend this module for any 4 hour slot - but it absolutely will take the full four hours to play all the content. Skipping or shortening this module does it a bit of a disservice.

I had to skip some encounters or render some of them easier due to time constraints to be able to fit in 4 hours. It had the drawback to yield an easier module than estimated, so if you need to fit in 4 hours as well you might rather raise the difficulty of the fights you won't skip. The flow of the module is linear, but offers various types of landscape, so if feels nice to follow along.

While the flowchart on this module is a beeline for the finish, this one's enjoyment is a bit of "Ohh! Ohh! I know what's gonna happen!" paid off a short while later with a "I knew it! I told you!" and that's a totally enjoyable thing too. I particularly enjoyed the defense of the Gillmann granaries from the sellswords and the interlude back in town, while the third act is a really fun, if straightforward dust up.
