Game Angry: How to RPG The Angry Way
Publisher: Angry Games, Inc.
by Matt P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/21/2019 15:18:44

Scott Rehm (aka The Angry GM) taught me how to GM - first through the myriad of articles on his website, and again (in more organized and polished manner) in this book. His grasp of what makes RPGs work is unparalleled, and he consistently articulates a specific and consistent vision of how to run a game. He is probably the only GM-ing resource whose advice I don't think I've ever said "well that doesn't really make sense." With chapters on what an RPG even is, action adjudication, playing NPCs, types of players (and how to engage them), and even story structure, this book is a fantastic intro to tabletop RPGs.

My only criticism would be that Rehm uses a lot of video game analogies when he's explaining what RPGs are and how to run them. While this is fine for me (as someone who plays a good amount of video games), it doesn't work as well for folks who may be older or just not into video games. I had hoped to be able to gift this book to some friends and acquaintances I thought would enjoy RPGs, but those who don't play video games would probably find it hard to follow a good amount of the book.

That said, the above is a fairly minor quibble. This is a fantastic intro to RPGs and to GMing, and every GM who runs "traditional" RPGs (vs "narrative" RPGs like PbtA and FATE) should give it a read. Even those who only run narrative RPGs could probably get a lot of good mileage out of the chapters on story structure etc, just as GMs who run "traditional" RPGs can learn from the more narrative

Bottom line - if you want to know how to GM, read this book.

PS - for anyone who finds the "Angry" part of the persona off-putting, it's considerably toned down in this book compared to the website.

This product is a steal at $1. Extremely polished, with very printer-friendly layer options. The characters are all well built, and would work perfectly for any kind of fantasy one-shot or as an example to show players when they're making their characters. The art is also fantastic. Having male/female versions of each character is the icing on the cake.

Savage Worlds Fillable Character Sheet - Generic Fantasy
Publisher: Pinnacle Entertainment
by Matt P. [Verified Purchaser]

Best SWADE character sheet I've found, bar none. The form-fillable areas are large enough for some things that often don't work on form-fillable character sheets, like short Edge descriptions or +1/+2's in stats. Putting Powers on the back is a plus for me so there isn't wasted space for non-AB characters. But by far the best thing about this character sheet... is how understated and non-annoying it is. So many character sheets insist on obnoxious backgrounds, graphics, etc - whereas this character sheet is one of the cleanest around, especially when you turn the parchment background off in the layers.

Kudos!

Reach of Titan - Playtest
Publisher: Third Act Publishing
by Matt P. [Verified Purchaser]

Tons of fun! This is a great team-based RPG focused entirely on giant boss battles with puzzle elements. Think "Shadow of the Colossus meets Attack on Titan". It is fairly easy to run as a GM and the core mechanic is great - each PC gets a pool of 6 d6's each turn that can be expended to perform actions. They can choose between taking many actions and using only a few dice for each action, or taking few actions and allocating more dice to each action (thus increasing the probability of success). The end result is a core mechanic where risk is firmly in the players' hands and each turn presents difficult decisions for them.

The final product (to come in early 2020, I believe) will include "hunt the Titans" and "build your settlement" modes of play in addition to the "fight the Titans" mode presented here, as well as character advancement and many more Titans.

Only criticism I'd give is that there are a decent number of typos and a few areas where the rules are somewhat unclear - however, I expect this from an early playtest product and since they're not charging for it I don't hold it against them.

Expanded Wealth

Great little expansion of the SWADE Wealth rules - well-thought out and provides some good guidelines for GMs who want to use the abstract Wealth system but would like guidance beyond what the core rules provide. The "Lifestyle" rules for codifying how quickly the Wealth die returns to normal after a purchase or loss are particularly helpful. This is well worth the asking price for any GM who wants to use the Wealth system!

Extremely bare compared to the Indesign template. A little guidance on how to use the different heading types etc would be kinda nice. Maybe a background?

Printer Friendly SWADE Character Sheet
Publisher: Demonskunk Studios
by Matt P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/26/2019 00:10:27

This is the "generic copy of SWADE character sheet without all the busy stuff" I've been looking for. Kudos, Demonskunk, and thanks for sharing. I would've paid $2.50-$5.00 for something this elegant. Only feedback I'd have is that the fields on the "wt carried/limit" could be expanded a tiny bit (there are some combos of digits that don't work, e.g. "999") and that the "injuries" section could probably be a bit smaller (and fit an extra Edge in the Edges section w/ that extra room).

All in all though, 10/10. Awesome character sheet.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was going for with that design, something simple and printer friendly. I'll definitely take that feedback into consideration next time I shore up the sheet!
