Ive been hankering to run this and finally got the chance. It reads really well (thats a huge understatement) and is proving so far to be as much fun to play as read through as a DM. Check out the actual play in youtube or whatever podcast you use: https://youtu.be/kC1rubv8ptU. Great work!

The author has been very helpful in provided another dowload for the raw maps! There's still a few missing raw maps that I had to snip from the PDF, hopefully those will be added. I've read the module twice through and suggest forshadowing it's elements to your players if you run a campaign leading up to lvl15. I see some issues that were mentioned in JD's review but it's otherwise well written and I can't wait to actually run it!

A high quality product that is quite unique, and also a poorly organized adventure with gaping plot holes.

I docked a star because there is no adventure summary, so as a GM you will have to slog through the entire 100 page book in order to assemble a coherant outline.

There are several plot glitches on top of the lack of a summary; for on, a key that is pr omised to be accessable 'at several locations' is nowhere to be found. Be prepared to spend 4-6 hours working up an outline and notes in order to GM this coherantly, and be prepared to to fill in some gaps.

For some reason the author descided to waste several pages setting up a randomizing feature 'for replayability', which really seems dumb. Worse, this creates several unpredictable paths to the end, and requires even more GM work.

Finally, the end battle is terrible. I docked a star for that. The bottom line is that the PCs have little or no impact upon the outcome of the adventure; in fact, if you use the random feature, the adventure may be completely unwinnable from the onset.

If you are a veteran GM willing to log the time, this project can be salvaged and made into something better.

JD, You're absolutely right, there are some elements of this adventure that are in sore need of attention. This was my first serious attempt at an adventure, and I am more than happy to admit it could do with some work, given everything I've learned over the last few years. In fact, I'm actually working on a 3rd "edition" of this adventure that should fix some of the flaws you've correctly outlined through rewriting the ending completely, ditching the Fortunes of Ravenloft and working to introduce a clearer outline whilst fixing the more egregious plot holes (one of the things I've learned to do is hire an editor, aha). Thank you for your honesty, feedback I can do something about is always welcome. :) O

Worth every dollar.

I'm running this module following the WotC Curse of Strahd module. The players are proud new owners of the demiplane of Barovia, but three years later, one of their friends go missing. After a week of searching, they find a small rift in the mists, leading them to the City of Eyes where they will have to fight for their lives to make it back out with their friend.

I've only read a bit so far, but I've been hanging on every word and I'm very excited to run it for my players!

Pros:

  • Over 100 pages of excellent world building and story telling in the gothic horror world of Elysium.
  • The city provides an open-world flavor set within a structured environment full of flavorful random encounters and detailed locations.
  • Detailed notes on everything a DM could want, from possible books in the library, to rumors about Elysium, and every single magical item up for bid at the auction house.
  • Custom trinket table, wild magic table, player race and backgrounds to be used specifically for the adventure.

Cons:

  • Borrows an awkward storytelling element of Curse of Strahd: leaving the location of important characters and magical items up to a random chance tarot reading.
  • The underwater mirror-town of Undercity serves as the climactic final act, but it’s disappointingly bare and limited in scope.
  • No separate player maps for dungeons.

THE VERDICT: FEATURING AN ABSOLUTELY STAGGERING AMOUNT OF CONTENT AND PHENOMENAL WORLD-BUILDING, “THE CITY OF EYES” WEAVES A MEMORABLE HIGH-LEVEL URBAN-HORROR ADVENTURE.

I ran this a few days back for an sizeable, well equipped party. By the second session, everyone's nerves were shot, everything terrified them, nobody dared to advance anywhere with the same bravado they were accustomed to, and you could hear the audible sigh when they finally managed to talk to our spider-y friend without certain death. In short, it was awesome, and hugely enjoyable for my players. deathbybadger pulls no punches; The City of Eyes is nothing like a typical adventure, and players who are accustomed to walking the earth as immortal demigods will quickly find their sense of scale...readjusted. For a party who appreciates a real struggle, with true difficulty, real setbacks, and the random luck (or lack of it) that reality deals its inhabitants, City of Eyes is fantastic - a go to for me when playing with higher level parties; achieving some kind of victorious ending is all the more satisfying when the players were truly challenged to reach it. This newer version is very similar to the old one, but makes some solid, if minor improvements.

I dont believe there is a bad deathbybadger module. Every single one has kept me up at night reading until I had finished it, and this is no exception. The second edition of the City of Eyes is a large improvement over the first one. Full up with extra content to keep your DM tastebuds satisfied. This is how lovecraftian, cosmic horror is meant to be written, and the price should be higher tenfold.

Another amazing module from deathbybadger.

This is Cosmic Horror meets Gothic Gaslighting at its finest. Dripping with vibe just like its namesake, this module stands apart from the rest of the DM guild. I found the first edition of the City of Eyes shortly after its release and since then the author has made this project a labor of love. The second edition draws even more mechanics from the Ravenloft genre (adding the Tarokka feature similar to "Curse of Strahd") and sets the record straight so that none can contest that the module was in any way lacking. But I won't spoil any of the new goodies here, only to say that I find the Second Edition well worth the purchase. If you wanted more of the City of Eyes, this is it, and it doesn't disappoint. Oliver Clegg knows how to write well. You feel his writing, his tone, and as a DM you know just how its going to look when the players finally see what awaits them. That face they will make is well worth the humble $4.99 price tag. For new buyers who don't know anything about the original, this module is not for the faint of heart. I say this because not all players enjoy a good investigation/mystery, which is the heart of this setting and adventure. I suppose with some work, it could be tooled in another direction, but that would spoil the flavour and feeling of what its trying to evoke. As a DM who likes my players to think and not just bash through everything, (although there is certainly ample opportunity for combat here), I like my combats to be thick with the vibe of the setting. In this adventure every enounter is meaningful and executed with intention (or madness). The villians here are notable, combats with them will be satisfying, or better yet, roleplay encounters that don't resort to physical violence that will leave players talking. That's my favorite part about this adventure/campaign guide, it gets Players talking. Speculating. I love hearing that. It gets people invested. I've played a lot of DnD adventures from multiple editions and this is one of the most engaging ones I've found. I know this review may have been wordy or simply mostly praise, but that's just my two Elyisan Silvers. Its like the original but better.
