Krampus: A Nacht to Remember - A Wintertime / Christmas One-Shot
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by oliver j. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/23/2023 10:12:45

Was very nice but there were some changes i felt it needed and changes I made simply based on preference:

Changes I'd recommend:

  • To prevent the adventure from being cut in half right from the getgo, I made the trip from the town to the keep take longer and I introduced a blizzard that was ramping up as the players arrive, prompting them to take shelter inside instead of attempting to chase after Krampus.

Other changes I made: Since Tier 2 players typically need their resources drained before entering a big fight, I ruled that the Iron Golem was already in defense mode, and will attack any player that enters the bedroom of Lord Klaus. I also drew up a foyer-like area to his bedroom in which the fight could occur and added 3 more golems (I had 7 very well-optimised players). Talking to Ceall prevents the surprise attack, and to emphasise their robot like nature, they would target the last player that hit them, provoking opportunity attacks. As a reward for the players and to help them in the upcoming fight, Lord Klaus gifted the players the magic items from the laboratory. Ceall helped Klaus communicate this. For the final boss fight I made his dim light ability a magical darkness that blinds, thus changing the way melees approach him and providing utility to the goggles of night and lantern of revealing. Although the magic items weren't used, this worked out really well.

Thoughts: When my party split to checkout both the lab and the library, I was able to build a lot of tension with Ceall when I described the rusty door creaking, checked passive perceptions, and described the creature in full detail. I switched back to the library group before going back to Ceall. His somehwhat insane but friendly demeanor gave them a good sigh of relief. This I found to be real fun. The riddle was sufficiently difficult (most riddles are too easy these days so that was great to see) and skill challenge was very engaging. More adventures need skill challenges for big chase scenes like these. The boss fight most of all I found was very fun. His Birch whip is a little underwhelming, i really enjoyed the synergy between his demonic shadows ability and the shadows however.

Although I made a lot of changes, that's just how I typically run modules. If run as written i still think the adventure was really good, I especially liked how concise and DM-friendly it was. A good amount of room to expand but not so much that it becomes a pain to read and prep.

The Madhouse of Tasha's Kiss - Adventure

High quality through and through, the horror is great and perfectly in theme for a halloween adventure. Although it works great as a oneshot, because of how heavily it involves the characters and their history, I will recommend running this as either a part of a campaign or with long established characters. Without spoiling too much, there are things here that can permanently change characters. I appreciate the way it goes about doing this, giving player's agency to dictate how this happens. The way the Big bad is setup from start to finish makes for a really satisfying finish, one that im sure players will remember for a long term. If I was to criticise anything, it would probably be the length. If you have players that lean into the roleplay, which this definitely caters to moreso, than you can expect this adventure to take about 5-6 hours.

This was the first AL adventure I ever ran and it was a blast! The puzzles were interesting and quick (perfect for AL), the encounters were fun and full of mystery, and the ending was great! I've run many AL modules at this point but not many compare to this. My only complaint is that it is difficult to run this module in 1 session.

Art for me is a pretty big deal when it comes to monsters. With the abundance of great magic items already out on the market as well I'm afraid it's just something I often tend to ignore unless I know it's a publishers primary focus. Puzzles, dungeons, and one shots however, I never feel like I could ever be short of those. They are written well and in depth, far more than one would normally expect from a general collection like this. For that reason I'm all for it and can't wait to run them at my own table.

A nice little addition to the DM's Bible. Pay what you want as well? count me in. Although i have yet to make extensive use of your product, if I feel that it has played out even better than I already know it will, then I'll come back and chuck in even more dollarinos.

D100 Forest Hooks, Fantasy RPG Encounter Ideas
Publisher: Philip Reed Games

I have a habit of accruing large collection of d100 lists and then filtering them down by getting rid of the things I don't like. Typically, this involves taking lists from dndspeak.com, /r/d100, and glumdark, and condensing them down to just 20-30. With this list, thankfully I didn't feel the need to filter out nearly as much as I typically do. I chose to keep around 40 hooks this time, telling me that the quality is definitely worth chipping a few dollars for. Combined with 100 location-specific rumors, what's not to love? The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because I do feel it could be just a dollar or 2 cheaper. Overall though, I definitely recommend.

Random Encounters Expanded

It's ridiculous just how many different encounters this provides. What's especially useufl is the fact that they are all seperated well within many different locations, allowing me to contextualise the encounters easily without having me go through the extra effort of finagling a generic encounter into the session and risking it look like something I just rolled up and slapped on. Another great addition to the endless encounter section of my DM's bible.

The 5e OneNote DM Bible

Extremely useful and will prove even moreso in the coming months. Although I had already made my own bible that i've been updating throughout the months it's helpful regardless that now I can replace all of my shitty formatting and fill in a lot of the gaps I was missing before. There is still more stuff left for me to discover, so far however i have found the DM screen to be the most useful.

I think new and old DMs alike will find a tool such as this very convenient and i cannot understate just how much of an impact this will make in reducing your filler time during games and your prep time overall. Highly recommend!

Gunslinger Martial Archetype for Fighters
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by oliver j. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/14/2023 10:17:20

I like it and I have running my gunslinger for about 2 years now. Although it is still quite effective, i will say sadly that combat with the sub-class can feel quite limited in terms of what you can do. Grit points can only get you so far and without feats like Sharpshooter or additional magic items that aid your gunplay, you are just doing the ol bang bang till they are dead. "I shoot it..." seems to be my catchphrase at this point. I would suggest taking Battlemaster with the Gunner feat. More versatile, can fire in melee range, the guns no longer have the "loading" property, and more and more powerful abilities. It's better but most of all, the battlemaster gives you plenty of incombat actions to take that far outweigh the gritpoint system.
