Monster Loot Vol. 1 – Monster Manual

I'm a big fan of the Loot series. Little details add so much to a game, and really make the post-encounter time a lot more entertaining. One of my favorite DM tools.

Temple of the Nightbringers: Anniversary Edition

Fun dungeon crawl. My group really enjoyed playing it as a one-shot with brand new characters. It is excellent for kicking off a brand-new group or adding in as a side quest as your party travels in/through the area. There's enough here to feel complete, but so much room to add your own things to the village and surrounding area if desired. Easily fits within any campaign world even though it is set in the Realms (Triboar/Longsaddle area). Would also make a great intro adventure to new players. Presentation is solid, well-written, and the artwork is really nice! I enjoyed just looking through it again after I had run it for my group.

Leverage: Waterdeep - "Waste Not, Want Not"
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Michael B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/24/2019 15:12:31

Part 2 of the Leverage series is a good installment in the series, and keeps the urban investigation theme going nicely. I liked the story and setup, but had to do some significant tweaking by fleshing out the guildhall and scaling back considerably on the below ground component. I personally felt like the "dungeon crawl" aspect didn't fit well with a bakers guild - but that's just me. It was really an easy fix to make a guildhall with a reasonable basement. That said, the adventure is well-written and and entertaining addition to W:DH, and a heckuva a lot more fulfilling than Faction quests.

Leverage: Waterdeep - "One Hand Washes the Other"
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

Picked this up to add some fun to W:DH game I am running. Having gone thru WDH as a player, I am eager to avoid some of the more problematic issues the campaign can present and give players a real reason to "buy in" to the overall premise, as it is quite different from the typical campaign. I can say this was by far the best session we have had in our campaign! (Waterdeep authorities are now on the lookout for an ape that broke out of a reported criminal/fence safehouse after stealing stolen goods!?!)

Fits in nicely with the "heist" theme of the campaign, a great urban escapade. Writing was easy to absorb, and did a great job of suggesting how to handle the strategies the players might use. The "Complications" mechanic was great as well. The results of a failed skill check are not always immediately realized! Brilliant!

I also purchased the other 2 mods in this series, and I can't wait to run my group through those. These are a great way for the party to bring down the cost of refurbishing Trollskull Manor while also increasing player investment in the campaign. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

CCC-UK-2 The Wayward Wives
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Michael B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/18/2019 10:12:01

This sequel to CCC-UK-1 stands on it's own quite well and presents a village that feels very different and darker than the somewhat idyllic hamlet in the first module. Like the predecessor, this module features a very good mix of social interaction and combat. There's a mystery to solve, and a the characters will likely find themsleves of having to make a choice on which "success" they feel is most important.

As in the earlier module, it was written before AL Season 8 guidlines had been put out for module writing, so this has all the benefits of the earlier format, plus sections/sidebars which detail the changes that an AL DM needs to make to the treasure found (i.e. none, grumblegrumble). So it is a great way for a DM new to Season 8 to jump in. (I know, Season 8 has been going on for a long time now, but I disliked it so much I resisted running any AL games for a long while; I still dislike it but I am getting over it. Note to any AL admins who happen to read this: CHANGE THE GOLD RULES!!!)

AL aside, this adventure is a great addition to any collection, AL-legal or not. It's a great sequel to the first one, but as I mentioned above it does well on its own. Like UK-1, it is great for newbies and players of all ages. The darker tone is a nice contrast to the wonder of UK-1. I hope we see CCC-UK-3 soon!

This module is a lot of fun. Though it was written before Season 8, there are sections that provide Season 8 adjustment instructions, which was very helpful to me, as it was my first time DMing under AL Season 8 rules. There is a nice mix of social interaction and combat and is a great 1st adventure for new players of any age, IMO. Though written for AL, it is a fine addition to any DM's collection. I look forward to running it again.

Brilliant adventure, hits all the marks any good adventure needs to hit. Lots of detail to help bring the adventure to life. Players loved the mystery, especially the fact that a "simple" Raise Dead did not work! I had to change the city location in order to fit it into my current campaign, but that was easy enough. I will use again with my next campaign, which will be in Waterdeep. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

GREAT adventure, a steal at this price. It's linear, but it's fun, challenging, and will inflict heavy damage on careless groups! Great hook suggestions, lots of room for role-playing, social interactions, and then BOOM, the fun really begins. I feel like it was tailor-made for my group. I look forward to seeing what else the author has to offer.

D&D Adventurers League Player & DM Pack
Publisher: D&D Adventurers League

I started playing D&D a while ago, back in 1980-81, and played regularly until 3rd edition came out. Though I appreciated what WotC was doing, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I didn’t start playing again until 2015, when I started seeing some buzz about 5e. Curious, I downloaded the free rules and began reading them. Very much intrigued by these “new” rules, I decided to check out at my FLGS, and before long I was playing in Adventurer’s League at the store. Loved it! I now have so many good friends because of it! 5e feels refined and smart, and seems to capture the best elements of what D&D was back in the 80’s and 90’s.

That said, if Adventurer’s League Season 8 rules had been in effect at the time, I would have scoffed at them once I understood them and not even tried to sit down at an AL table. Specifically, the rules regarding gold and treasure from adventures. Wow. It seems that now our AL characters aren’t adventurers anymore; they are salaried employees of AL (a subsidiary of WotC, a subsidiary of Hasbro Inc.), receiving advancement-based pay. It’s “Papers and Paychecks” 2nd edition. (You old-timers will get that joke from the 1e DMG.)

I’ve spent a lot of money on D&D since 2015. Books (including the upcoming Hydro74 editions of the core books) minis, accessories... I paid hundreds to get my 5e rulebooks professionally bound in leather. I pre-ordered the Beadle and Grimm’s Platinum Edition of W:DH. I’ve got the collectors version of Art and Arcana. I love this game. And while I still play “homebrew,” I can’t bring myself to DM AL at my FLGS under these silly rules. I will not buy the mods on DM's Guild and therefore (despite my deep pockets) will not be supporting the work of some great folx who give so much to AL.

I know that certain rules must be maintained and some changes had to be made to ensure a level playing field for all participants around the world. The AL gold economy and magic item acquisition was clearly in need of change - and while the intent is great, the mechanisms put in place are far beyond clunky. They actually damage the gameplay, which damages the AL brand, and by extension, the D&D brand.

I heard a story recently on NPR wherein they reference “finding treasure,” which got me thinking about how that is such a classic human experience (whether wished for or actually achieved); one that exists outside D&D - it’s literally existed in human cultures for millennia. And Season 8 AL rules really eliminate that fun, excitement and wonder.

I hate to think of someone here in Dallas, Texas, watching the many streaming games, then trying to sit down and try D&D at an AL table and learning how silly some of these rules are, how they fall short of common sense expectations and ruin immersion. I then think of them NOT returning to play because the gameplay is not what they expected. They would miss out on many potential friendships and hours of fun, all because with AL, they would be seeing a stunted and nonsensically restrictive version of this otherwise wonderful game. (And when I tried to explain these new rules to a table of 8-year-old players, they were utterly bewildered - not because they didn’t understand the rules - but because they didn’t get such rules. I’d never seen such exasperated expressions on such young faces. But I digress.)

:::deep breath:::

I truly hope that the powers-that-be consider making changes when AL hits Season 9.
