A good self-contained little adventure, with enough detail that a DM can run it essentially as-is with moderately little preparation, but also lots of areas where a DM can improvise, customize, or expand the story.

I ran this as a one shot for 2 players and it fit perfectly into a 4 hour session with glossing over the sea journey and travelling around the island. This definitely could have been used as a much longer mini campaign with the sea journey and so much more on the island but as written it worked perfectly as a 4 hour one shot. this was the first time I had played an NPC going along with the party and that worked well, I played him so that he couldn't make any decisions at all and the players had to tell him where to go.

The gaint crabs made a fun encounter although due to the dice my players made this a bit of a slog. The witherlings were great fun and I took the idea that a ritual could bring them back with the final witherling rushing around picking up bones and making a pile to try and revive them while my Players were bemused as to what he was doing. However, when the pile began to knit together they made short work of it.

The mud mephits were fun with everyone being covered in sticky mud. The mimic was a very fun encounter with weapons sticking to it and not getting released, a push over the edge of the pit took the player with it. My players came up with some great role play and imaginative ways to resolve the problems. They ended up running from the mimic carrying the real chest and told the mud mephits that the treasure box following was for them and they could have everything in the chest and ran out leaving the mimic and mephits in a very sticky battle.

As this was run as a one shot the treasure was huge for them but unless we bring the characters back it will be left with Dirk at the Seldom Spring for use by other adverturers.

Thank you for a great adventure.

We really enjoyed the campain. My group loved the storyline and the special loot. They especially like the alternate ending to which brought what they felt was a more realistic ending. Thank you for lending your imagination to the rest of us.

Flindbar's Treasure is a great adventure that offers fun exploration of a gnoll-infested island for low-level characters. This could make a great adventure to run as a oneshot, start a mini-campaign focused on Yeenoghu & gnolls, or to make an introductory adventure within a larger campaign. The best part of this adventure is that it offers the framework for a DM and party to create an engaging story, with several potential set pieces which range across a spectrum of encounters from roleplay opportunities to exploration to combat. The writing is simple and clear, and stat blocks are included where they are needed. On top of that, I have to admit that while the treasure seems a bit much for 2nd-level characters, the fact that the treasure is such fanastic imagery (a chest overflowing with coins, silver bars, gold goblets, and jewels) that I can't help but love it. The adventure as it is written is great.

However, I believe this adventure is missing two things that would make it absolutely fantastic. One is some kind of ocean-going encounter: gambling with the crew on the voyage, a combat encounter with dire seagulls, or a navigation puzzle. The second is a small random encounter table for the island beyond "if the party gets restless throw more gnoll witherlings at them." The island is rife with opportunities, given the great hints at previous civilization and interesting environmental interactions, so a random encounter table could really elevate the immersive experience of exploring it (poisonous snakes in the trees, a cracked and broken shrine, the skeleton of a primordial dragonborn)! If a DM were to cook these things up it could take just 30 minutes and make this adventure truly fantastic!

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a review, and for the kind words. I chose to gloss over the ocean voyage and leave it in the hands of the DM, primarily to leave all options open. However, one of the next two items I release will be a collection of 1st - 4th level encounters to help flesh out other adventures, so I'm now thinking I'll throw a couple of sea encounters in there. As for the island, it's really rather small, so pretty much anything that can't fly or swim away was killed long ago. I considered saying there are witherlings here, here and here, but decided to leave it for the DM to use them as required.
