Whereas Xas Irkalla is dark amd horrific in every way, Alone Against the Forlorn Wild, takes Strain in a different direction: Wilderness Survival.
My players have faced all kinds of dragons and monsters in ither game systems, but the surprise and terror they expressed when a cougar ambushed and tore out the jugular of ome of them is further proof that Strain is truly a unique game that stands in its own.
Two TPKs in one hour and the players loved it, they made their last stand in a cave surrounded by hungry wolves while their little campfire slowly went out.
In this module you are nobody in an uncaring wilderness. You arent the chosen one, there is no glory and fame to be found. There are no gods watching and guiding the party. Only by fighting tooth and nail for every bit of food, every drop of water, and every second of life will you have any chance of surviving.
The last surviving player in my party was screaming atop a muddy hill while wolves circled him. He stood over the body of a wolf he'd killed with his bare hands, and he knew this was his last moment. He would die by the wolves and be lost to nature. No one would ever know he existed, but in those final moments he defied it all amd would not let the beasts take him down easily.
This campaign was one of the best campaigns i ever ran according to my party. I give all credit to this book and the system: Strain.
Totally worth owning!
