I ran this with my 7 and 6 year old (with their 4 year old brother watching on) and it worked out fantastic. They really enjoyed the problem solving and are eager for more D&D experiences. Definitely recommend this as a first adventure for little kids. The entire package is really tremendous, the kid friendly character sheets are quite good and easy for them to understand as well. The book is also pretty high quality.

Great fun with two sessions of a bit less than an hour each with the five year old, one on one. Mostly theater of the mind, to keep it flowing nicely. She ran around the table a lot to 'get her sword from her bag'. She was very engaged. With the kobold encounter she asked me about her options. I said, basically fight or allow yourself to be captured and taken to the ogre as a prize. She has seen Shrek, and she had the tip from the Bright Brothers, so she had blind faith in the goodness of the ogre, and gladly let herself be captured. At the end of the story she drove to triumphantly back to the village in her car, that she insisted was parked nearby.

I played this scenario as an introductory game for my 7yo daughter and her best friend this past weekend. As short as the adventure is, it was still a tad long for that age group and I ended up eliminating about half the content on the fly (an entire encounter, and many other elements, completely disappeared). The girls were not terribly interested in combat and were able to navigate the entire scenario without really fighting anything, which is fine, and well accounted-for in the adventure as written. On that basis, I'd say this adventure was a success.

The adventure does occasionally assume that the players are steeped in D&D style high fantasy, which these kids were not.

(All in all, I realize that there are other RPG systems more suited to these kids than D&D, but that's not this adventure's fault!)

I found this adventure to be just what was needed to peek my daughter's interest in D&D. The adventure was short and exciting for her, and it left her wanting more. Next time she wants to try her hand at DMing! I'm all for it, and I am looking forward to seeing what she comes up with. I'm adding a little bit of background to help the reader see possible ways to make it work for them: for years now, I have always gone out once a week to play D&D with a group, leaving my daughter and wife home to have a "girl's night." This has always been a thing, and my daughter has always been curious to see what D&D is like. In preparation for this adventure, I got my 9 year old daughter to help me paint the figures, and this really seemed to increase her level of fun, building up her anticipation for actually playing the game. For the adventure, I also looked up kid-friendly images of the creatures that she and my wife encountered during the game. This was a great assistant to their imaginations, especially for my daughter as kids tend to be visual learners. But the best thing I did for this adventure was to use a battlemat to sketch out trees, a pathway and bushes for the goblin encounter and then also for the ogre encounter. If you are interested in getting children to play and appreciate D&D, I highly recommend doing this in combination with using this adventure (as well as others like it). For the adventure, the minimum you will need is approximately 4 goblins and one ogre figurines. You should be able to easily find these on an online store and get them shipped directly to your place. I forgot to mention that my daughter has ADHD.

I run D&D with groups of kids and this has been an often-suggested product. I'm so glad I took the plunge and bought the print version, it makes a big difference to have the reference material hard-copy in front of me. I especially appreciated the exploration into the multiple ways the group could deal with the ogre at the end, great food for thought. Younger players often need explicit guidance on their options and having that detailed makes this a superb adventure.

I purchased the premium print version as I love having a real book in my hands. I looks like a great story and I can't wait to introduce my daughter to the game.

It talks about character sheets already included, but my copy does not have any. The last couple pages are blank, I was wondering if they are supposed to be printed there.

It's a wonderfully written adventure that know how little ones approach the game. The plot is earnest, endearing, approachable, and has room for as much humor as you and your players want. It smartly has children protagonists, a child-like villain, and a scenario familiar to kids as well. Highly recommended if you are looking to get younger players into gaming!

It's very short, but at the same time, it should be! The target audience of this module is children, and children have notoriously short attention spans. I laughed a lot during our test play session on Roll20.net. AOaHC has enough of freeform roleplaying moments - such as during the party - to test a child's creative storytelling ability, but it has enough of fun low-violence combat that will keep them excited and moving forward in the plot. Additionally, there's some replayability based on what choices the kids make. There aren't too many branching storylines or what I call "chasers," but there is a very noticeable branch that could add another 30-60 minutes of gameplay encounters before the finale. Lastly, the premium book is nicely laid out and definitely looks like a production you'd pick up in a game store. I highly recommend this version of the module, plus all proceeds benefit Extra Life! It's a win-win for parents/adults looking for a module to introduce children to the wide world of D&D/tabletop roleplaying. Nice work!

I’ll admit, running games for kids is tough. They tend to catch you off your guard a lot by asking unexpected, but creative, questions. I love that Chris suggests you never tell the players they cannot try something and adhere to the “Rule of Cool”. Basically, if it sounds cool you should not only allow it but also encourage it.

This is a fun and well written adventure to help introduce kids (and even new people) to the game. Honestly, it's a good way to get a family into D&D. I took it down to a local game store with my two boys (8 and 6) and added two more new to D&D players and they all had a blast. They loved the story twist and went right along with it. It took us a little less than 2 hours and we got tons of roleplay, and a few encounters in durring that time. I highly reccomend this mod for an INTRODUCTORY session, especially with kids.

My local game store was impressed and asked if I'd be interested in making it a reocurring family learn to play event. I think I'd be down for that.
