Tales from the Rocket Age
Publisher: Why Not Games
by Tony C. [Verified Purchaser]

The four stories in this book are all quite different, yet they are all based in the same fictional universe - one where Einstein, Tesla, and Goddard invented an interplanetary rocket in 1931, and humans have expanded to the planets and moons around them. Of course, being in the pulp planetary romance genre, the Solar System is teeming with intelligent life. And, being set in 1938, there are Nazis to use as the villains (as well as non-humans on occasion).

None of the four short stories was terrible, but only one really grabbed me - Emancipation Knights by Ken Spencer, which is a strong homage to The Maltese Falcon - the rest were good, but not exceptional. And I think perhaps Nazis were overused as villains - in the setting they have created, there are plenty of areas for conflict without having to have Nazis involved in all the skulduggery.

If you're a fan of the role-playing game that it's based on, this is worth a read, and it's not going to damage your hip pocket nerve either.

I kind of see what the author was trying to do here, but it has failed pretty badly. There are a lot of combats, but most of the monsters are no challenge for a T4 party - particularly now that items like a Staff of the Magi have become pretty commonplace - there were two in the group of 5 players that I DMed this for. I think the author was going for a war of attrition feel, but CR 2 and 3 monsters (even in groups of half-a-dozen or more) just don't drain the resources of a T4 party - they are taken out with a few charges from a staff and a bunch of cantrips. My party had a paladin and no other healing, and I don't recall the paladin using much of her healing pool - many of the PCs never even got through all their temps. It was nice that there was an attempt to keep the monsters thematically linked, but if you're going to DM it, take enough prep time to go through Mordenkainen's and replace a whole bunch of the creatures.

Also, putting in text room descriptions instead of maps just seems a bit lazy to me.

The Secrets of Skyhorn Lighthouse

I really enjoyed running this adventure, and my players seemed to enjoy it too. It fitted nicely into the campaign, as they had just completed the 5e conversion of the AD&D2 module Evil Tide, but weren't very intereated in continuing the trilogy.

Each section took one session, so about 6-7 hours of playing time. Session one was everything from the start through to clearing the lighthouse, session was the caverns beneath. The adventure is fast-paced and the combats are challenging without being overwhelming. Although what could have been one of the toughest combats - the three sharks in the cavern - ended up being not much challenge, as one of the PCs is a lycanthrope sea wolf and sharks don't have silver teeth :) I suspect this is not an issue most DMs will face.

Overall it's a lot of fun and the eelfolk make an interesting villain race. None of my players died, but at least half the party was on 0 hp at some stage. My group was 6 PCs of 5th level.

Rolemaster Combat Minion (RM Classic License)

I've only just started using this as a GM, although I have been a player in a campaign where the GM uses it for a while now.

I like it. I found it pretty easy to learn and use, although better documentation would be nice. The YouTube videos are helpful, but not really comprehensive enough.

Keeping track of all the things going on in a RoleMaster combat can involve a lot of bookkeeping, and this program does an excellent job of that, and this is especially helpful in a large combat - the last one being 5 PCs and 8 monsters - it made the combat flow a lot more smoothly.
