So there is this part of RPG gaming where you are walking around with a character in your head, imagining what he would do next, or his origin story, or whatever. And if you are lucky you get to take that character to your gaming group and bring him out for a few hours. But as often as not your don't have a stable gaming group or if you do your character doesn't get to land on the table, or not for long enough, so he lives in your head, mostly unfulfilled.

So this is a game where you get to play with that character in your head, whenever you want. Where there is no difference between your head canon and when you are rolling dice, because it's all the same.

I feel like I may be talking crazy, so let me just say: You made an awesome game, and you should feel awesome.

Castle of the Dead: A Micro Chapbook RPG
Publisher: Micro RPG

I had great fun playing this with my kids. I love that it's one sheet of paper folded in half. I just printed out two copies so each kid had a set of rules, and their character sheet on the cover. (That's the lowest ink version). We used dwarven forge tiles to build out the castle, that worked out quite well. Mechanically the game is quite tough, and a bit of a slog, but the rules are so simple it's easy to hack. For my kids game I let them go back to town and buy stuff, however that reset the castle. Other tweaks I'm considering: Dex and Wits seem quite weak, I may put in Dex based melee, and maybe Wits based ranged and melee weapons. The spell book solves the Wits issue, but to keep it contained to the basic game adding a couple wits weapons seems doable.

Finding the boss is quite difficult, even after encountering the other monsters you have to find the right room (1/3) and then roll the boss (1/6). That's a 1/18 chance. I will probably make it so that once the boss can spawn, he does automatically.

The fights seem to take a bit too long, but that may be due to my kids and their particular characters. I'm considering having a pool of health for a group of monsters rather than individual health, which would allow overkilling with good damage rolls.

I'm going to look through more chapbooks to see the variations in the rules before making any changes yet.

Oh, also the game works perfectly fine with two players.

e-Adventure Tiles: Temple of the Spider Queen
Publisher: SkeletonKey Games

I was able to use this set for the finale of the classic module D3: Vault of the Drow, to great effect. I was able to switch around tiles to make it more cave-like than temple-like, print out a few more egg sacks for a plot point, and construct a lower level room out of the bonus tiles. This really proves the versitility of tiles; while I liked Ed's default layout and was tempted to use it as is, I was able to tweak it to meet my needs without it looking cobbled together.

This book is a sequel of sorts to the classic 1e supermodule A1-4 Scourge of the Slavelords. It details the same region and organizations and updates them to the 2e rules and Greyhawk timeframe. I actually used this book for background info for the original module.

LIKED: The writing and artwork are good. I like the idea of a region book that supplies a lot of adventuring ideas without being a standard adventure module.

DISLIKED: The scan is pretty bad. The book made some interpretations of the original source material that I decided not to use.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
This is a pretty cool little 3d cardstock encounter from the old days. As usual, the scan is bad, but it doesn't really effect the cutouts, just the text.

LIKED: Liked the artwork and how it formed a complete encampment. Honestly I'll probably only be using the 2D pieces in my game, as 3d cardstock tends to get crushed pretty easily around my house.

DISLIKED: The scan, 1e rules.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Yet another book I got for my bard character, but didn't end up using. The book is an interesting discussion on using magic as a performance. However there is little new introduced in the book, and I think I might have been expecting a different subject. I suppose I was expecting a discussion on how perfomances could influence or even produce magic, rather than how to entertain people with magic.

LIKED: The pdf format is clean and attractive. GDQ 1-7 Queen of the Spiders
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Jay C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/01/2006 00:00:00

This is a great compilation. The scan is not that great, as is the case with most of the original TSR scans.

LIKED: This is probably the most famous of the 1st edition module series. Classic dungeon crawling at it's best.

DISLIKED: I didn't like some of the material they added to connect the modules together. For example they have the players come upon a giant black bubble slowly eating the city. Then they are sent to fight the giants. It doesn't take much to realize that giant interplanar bubbles are not the normal tactics of giants, and that there must be something else behind it. This makes the first three modules feel like filler before you get to the drow, which wasn't the case in the original versions.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Very Satisfied
A very interesting, streamlined approach to d20. The presentation is very minimal, with no artwork whatso ever, but I didn't consider that a negative for this type of rules book.

LIKED: I like the streamlined skills, ability scores, and class abilities.

DISLIKED: The change to the damage system is the most radical change, and hardest for me to judge. I'm not saying I don't like it, but I'd have to playtest it for a while to really made a judgement. Same goes for the magic system.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
