This was an amazing starter story. It was easy to run and I was able to use it to introduce a new player to the game. The story is enjoyable (especially if you have super creative players). Definitely worth having in your library to use for a new campaign or to scale up to run later on in your story.

Really enjoyed the character development and mystery format for this one. There was enough material to carry us through a few 2 hour sessions, and the group was able to follow the leads fairly easily. Only complaint I heard was that the town really didn't seem like they could take care of themselves. (Why do they need our party to examine their dead villagers? Are they just letting the corpses fester until we show up?) Thanks for putting this out there!

Thanks for the review!! I'm glad you enjoyed the mystery. I think if it came up at my table that the town doesn't seem able to look after itself, I'd say yes, that's correct. The town is tiny - dealing with werewolves is way outside of it's capabilities, especially because the very first person to die was the only person who had any real chance of fighting back or undesrtanding what was happening; ser thames. That's why Oswald the Coroner is there at all - he's there to find out why ser thames is dead and decide if the town needs help from the king's army. Unfortunately for the town, he's pretty ineffective at his job, so if the heroes do nothing, the town is doomed. If that wasn't the case, there's no reason for the adventure to exist. In my own personal setting, this adventure takes place in a country where the empire has largely withdrawn from the affairs of small towns and doesn't care about them anymore, so this adventure is sort of supposed to imply that too.

This is a good mystery one-shot adventure for new players to D&D. It will especially appeal to those who enjoy role play and some bit of thinking - the only real combat is really at the end, though it's easy enough to toss in some random encounters if the DM wants. Even if the players don't do things in the order of the adventure, it's modular enough to juggle things around. In the 2 times that I've run this, I've had to railroad players a bit - especially at the very end so that they finish it within the time we'd planned. I guess that's more to do with my DM skills than the adventure but even so, it's easy enough to drop clues and hints to railroad the players without them necessarily feeling it so.

I agree with so many other reviews. It's really well written and a pretty good mystery for beginner players. My only MINOR complaint is that players can find out pretty early that a werewolf is involved. If I run it a second time, I'll try to find away to hide that fact a little longer. Fantastic art too!

As other's have mentioned, you might want to run an encounter in the forest with wolves. For newer players, you'll want them to get some combat experience before fighting the bbeg.

I recently ran this as a long-time player, first-time DM and it was great! Though my players did nothing in the same order as the text, it was easy enough to jiggle things around. They really were guessing right up until the end, and it was fun to do the necessary improv to respond to their allegations and investigations. If you want a combat-heavy adventure this isn't it, but if you enjoy murder mystery then it's definitely worth your time. My (and my players') only criticisms were that there were a couple of elements which really felt like they were going to be linked to the solution, but are actually not mentioned again, which led them on a long goose chase that I hadn't prepared anything for e.g. spoilers whoever sent Ser Thames the sword - my players were very invested in getting to the bottom of that. I really enjoy making stuff up on the fly so I didn't mind, but if you prefer to have everything sketched out beforehand just bear those loose ends in mind when prepping.

One of the best times I've had DMing for a group of four new players. The roleplaying and investigation encounters were engaging, and they loved Lady Sybill. I've DM'd for many first time groups and this was the best introduction to dnd I've seen. They loved the skill check / roleplay components of this one-shot, and they all lost it cheering when they pretty much one shot the priest with a crit on the arrow of shapechanger slaying. I need to find more modules like this! This is what dnd should be.

Great introduction module for a group of new D&D players. Added a little forest wolf battle just to give them a combat introduction before the final, but would highly recommend as an introduction to the game. Took about 4.5 hours with 4 players.

This is a really excellent adventure for a GM of any experience but particularly for a new GM. It is very well laid out and show potential connections between scenes without prescribing a particular route. I especially like the clear GM guidance on rearranging scenes if the players take different routes, on NPCs and their characteristics, and on skill check DCs and failing forward.

I ran it for a group of three experienced players and they had a great time exploring, investigating and chatting to the villagers. Duration around 4.5 hours.

I have run this twice now, once at a convention where it played out barely under 4 hours and the finale was rushed and not as satisfying as I'd have liked.

I have been running it online with a group of strnagers over the last 2 weeks and it has stretched into what wil become a third session on Tuesday.

If you want to see how I ran it online: here is a youtube link--

My honest review is that without quite a bit of work on my part, the module (particularly the ending, is literally (yes literally) toothless. And its a werewolf story. So that's a bad thing.

I did a lot of work adding detail to the town and the NPCS and the plot. On the other hand the overall idea and big picture is good. I removed the kindly lady in the forest and made her a Chrone/Hag in my first version. The second time (online) the players shortcircuited a lot of the encounters with thorough investigation and roleplaying.

I played this one with my boyfriend. Even if he did figure out what the murderer was, he did not see it coming when he found the murderer at the altar. It was a harrowing fight, but I think the mystery of it was the best. I would definitely want to run this one again - especially for a bunch of players who are new to the game, as they have plenty of close-call moments and times when they can think creatively.

This adventure has been an absolute blast for my players! They're three level 3s, and we've spread this out into three sessions (run time of the first two sessions was 2-3 hours each, and I expect the last session to be about 2 hours.) I absolutely adore the NPCs and the representation they provide. I just wish the author had more campaigns available!!

This was a really fun storyline to run through. I ran it with two PCs at Level 1 (though they both had a feat) and it took about four sessions, which were a couple hours each. I added a small bit of combat (three wolves) into the story since there really isn’t hardly any fighting until the end. Exploration, interaction, and investigation were all really fun both from the PC point of view and from the DM. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Wonderful story, lots of great characters and tons of opportunities to expand upon what is written. Every time I play my players manage to go off the story track or go to an area I hadn't considered them going to, which makes it more fun for me IMO. Lovely all around, great experence. Tons of fun every time I play. Warning, I found this to be an average of a 6 hr story, not 3 hours like the description says.

Love this oneshot. Played it with both my teams and they all really enjoyed it! Perfect amount of mystery and just enough fighting.
