Curse of Strahd: The Abbot's Journal
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Clay T. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/13/2018 13:55:55

Like the author's (Carl Huber, who has several nice products on DMs Guild) other "book" product, Curse of Strahd: The Tome of Strahd with Cypher UPDATED, this "Abbot's Journal" has great artwork and will make your player's say "oh cool!" when you give them this handout.

Unlike his Tome of Strahd product, this PDF file isn't print-ready for double-sided booklet printing (you can't just print and fold). But that's not a big deal. Just:

  1. print all the pages single-sided,
  2. fold the cover in half and set it aside,
  3. cut the rest of the pages in half,
  4. stack the interior-pages half-sheets in sequence (just like they appear in the PDF),
  5. put the interior pages in the folded cover,
  6. staple the edges of the interior pages to the cover,
  7. optional: trim the outside edges with a paper cutter to remove the white margins

It's well worth the $0.75 suggested pay-what-you-want price, to give your players a fun D&D moment while advancing the plot.

This is a fun little supplement to enhance the play experience of Curse of Strahd. Player's love handouts and this one is really well done and worth the suggested $1 pay-what-you-want. It comes with two PDF versions of the "Tome". Tip: to print this as a booklet, use the "Double-sided print" version, but for most printers, you'll need to rotate the 2nd, and 4th (last) pages upside-down so that the booklet pages print top-to-top.

DM Screen of Greater Referencing
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Clay T. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/07/2018 16:42:07

[Review updated after Creator's response - Still 5 stars. Since my original review, Ben has added a portrait-oriented version.]

This is the best DM reference for use with a landscape-oriented [and now portait-oriented with the new edition!] DM's screen that I've found. I particularly like that it includes the Action Options from the DMG (Climb Onto Bigger Creature, etc.). It also has a section for basic stats for up to 8 characters (character and player name, AC, HP, Passive Perception, and Spell Save DC). That section is super handy for use with a wet-erase pen if you are using the Hammerdog DM Screen. [Also, Ben includes both PDF and Word versions of the screen, allowing you to easily make changes for your home rules.]

I use this product for the DM side of my screen, and the Player's Cheet Sheet by Sean Wickett (also on DMs Guild) for the Players' side. Sean Wickett's product has a nice, but brief, "Combat Progression" section, but I'd like to see a more detailed and complete list of the action options. [Ben recommended Player's Quick Combat Guide, by Adam Hancock, available on DMs Guild, which I've added to the Players' side. It is a flow chart that shows the sequence of combat.]

[Having used this screen for many months, now, I modified the section with the blanks for character stats to include a line for Level, Class, and Race. And I print a version of this section on labels to create name-badges for players. I DM for total noobs at least once a month, and every week I run a group that rotates different players, so name-tags and the sheet with the blanks for character stats is a big help.]

Great job, and thanks for creating this!

Hi Clay, Thank you so much for your lovely review! It really does mean a lot to know that someone appreciates what I'm doing. The 4x6 version is a non-starter, but for 2018 I've updated the product to include a version of the screen in portrait orientation. As far as a player action options sheet goes, I'd recommend Adam Hancock's "Player's Quick Combat Guide," available here https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide?src=also_purchased&filters=0_0_45442_0_0_0_0_0

D&D 5e Player Cheet Sheet
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Clay T. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/24/2017 22:28:03

This review is kind of a companion to my review of the Screen of Greater Referencing product by Ben Forde.

The Player Cheet Sheet is the best insert I've found for the players' side of my DM's screen. The great reviews here are well-deserved. For the DM's side of my screen I find the Screen of Greater Referencing product by Ben Forde to be almost perfect, only lacking a portait-oriented version.

Both of these products would benefit from a sheet for the Players' side that shows all the combat action options and the sequence of combat. The Player Cheet Sheet has a nice "Combat Progression" section, but I'd like to see a more detailed and complete list of the action options. Since this cheat sheet only takes up 2 panels of the screen there's room to expand into a third panel.

Thank you for a very handy and well-designed product!

The Forgotten Realms Atlas Project: Book One

These computer-drawn maps are quite nice. They are less-detailed compared with the maps produced by WotC for 3rd Edition, but provide a nice base for the DM to add his/her own detail. I look forward to seeing how the author incorporates these into future products in his promising Heroes of the Sundered Realms campaign setting.

Ten Clever Kobolds
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Clay T. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/07/2016 12:15:58

Kobolds are a standard monster used in many adventures, and this is a very helpful and well-produced supplement for any DM that aims to make adventures more memorable and interesting. I needed a kobold shaman his pair of kobold sidekicks for an adventure where the PCs might team up with the kobolds against a tribe of goblins that has imprisoned them (yes, that cliche). This supplement did most of my work for me, with fully-detailed stat blocks. Big thumbs up on this.

Shaman Class (5e)
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Clay T. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/07/2016 11:35:10

This is a really nicely done product, well-laid-out, with a fully-detailed new class and a supplement covering the spirits that a Shaman might commune with. It is as nicely produced as an official WotC product. There are a number of Shaman supplements on DMsGuild, and I have a few of them, but this is the best one that I've seen.
