Castle Xyntillan

The formatting and writing are both top-notch. As other reviewers have noted, the formatting maximizes ease of use at-the-table. Room descriptions are concisely written with bolded and bulleted text. The rooms are interesting and interactive. The castle's layout is well-designed. I also love the virtual tabletop acommodations provided with the PDF dungeon.

Two things I missed are a high-level overview of "what's going on" for the referee (like a backstory of the castle) and more description of what the NPCs want & think of one another. The foreward basically says that "there is no backstory," and the description of the NPCs generally includes only what they are currently doing, not their goals or plans.

So overall I would say this is a very good funhouse megadungeon, with an emphasis on the "funhouse." It makes little sense, and really isn't meant to. This might be fine for some players (including you). For myself, it got old after a while because it amounted to little more than "open the next door to see what other wacky/zany/deadly thing awaits you there!" There was little to "figure out" or "discover" due to the lack of depth provided in the text, unless the referee is willing to put in a lot of work to make sense of the non-sense.

If that sort of funhouse-style play appeals to you, or you just want an example of how adventures should be formatted, then I highly recommend this adventure.

I wrote a longer review here, if you are interested!

Kidnap the Archpriest

An excellent adventure that is both fun and unique. The "heist" concept is brilliantly executed, divided into clear phases of planning/research, execution, and escape. The adventure offers multiple approaches in each respect, providing the players with many options and forcing them into none. Its descriptions are both concise and evocative. The formatting and layout are also designed with thoughtful consideration to ease-of-use.

Some things to keep in mind before you purchase:

  • This adventure involves a lot of city exploration, interaction with NPCs, and information management. I personally found this adventure very challenging to run as a referee - not because of the adventure's failings, but because it feels innately more complex than other adventures. It has a lot of moving parts, in ways that others do not.
  • This adventure is written for a very low-magic setting. The priests in this game are not spellcasters. If you plan on playing in a rules system where the religious institution(s) is/are magical, you will need to modify this adventure to fit.

Overall, it is definitely worth the $5 price tag to download on PDF. Highly recommended. I have written a more detailed review here if you are interested.

Bone Marshes

I had this adventure in my wish-list for a while after Bryce Lynch recommended it on tenfootpole in 2019. Then Ben Milton on Questing Beast reminded me it was on my wish-list with his review of it on YouTube, so I bought both the print and PDF versions earlier this month during DriveThruRPG’s Christmas in July sale. This product's got some great "adventure juice," with creativity out the wazoo and some neat rules sub-systems built off of Knave. However, I experienced some problems with inconsistencies (and even outright contradictions) in the text. For the sake of spoiling some stuff from the adventure, I won't go into them here - but I've made a full write-up on Blogger here if you're interested. I was caught off-guard after seeing reviews from other sources I trusted that didn't raise these concerns, so I wanted to give someone else a "heads up" before making their purchase.

To be clear, I would still recommend this product if:

  1. You like the Knave system and want to use this game’s version of it (or something VERY similar). I wouldn't recommend trying to translate this to Pathfinder or 5e
  2. You want to run this mini-hex crawl as a few separate one-shots or as a mini-campaign separate from anything else. It compatibility with the Knave rules and the potentially world-destroying nature of its central conflict makes this thing hard to “drop in” to an existing game
  3. You don’t mind filling in the gaps of a published product. This thing will take some work to prep, run, fix, and generally figure out

David Schirduan, if you're reading this (and I realize you might be, due to your responses to comments on the discussion page), I want to emphasize that I overall like the ideas in the adventure. I would totally give this four or five stars with some revisions and updates. And a large part of why I'm writing this review is because 1. I will probably buy future products you make and 2. I'd like to see those future products improve upon this one

Interesting in concept. Like cilantro on a good salad: surprising and refreshing, but it’d get bland and lose its novelty quickly if you go overboard. Full review is here: [https://speakwithdeadtrees.blogspot.com/2020/07/mouse-guard-review.html]
