I was quite disappointed with this title. It has a decent collection of systems and tables, and feels like a more concrete iteration of WhiteHack, as the author notes in the introduction.

The system itself is unusable on its own, however, as Crown uses a blood magic (cast from hit points) magic system, but provides no spells, nor any guidance on setting costs for spells.

To actually play the game as intended, you either need to purchase additional material or write it yourself, which I consider unacceptable in a paid product advertised as a full game. It baffles me that the author did not simply include their existing magic rules with the game and instead made them a nominally "optional" supplement.

Knave

Knave is a very solid system if you want to start playing a classic OSR module quickly. Character creation is quick, the mechanics are simple, especially for anyone familiar with D&D 5e, and the rules, while light, give you everything you need to run a typical OSR dungeon.

It does show its limitations if you want to keep using the characters who survive that first adventure. You will have to do all the world building for the PC’s home base on your own.

Additionally, since Knave characters only advance via stats, but their capabilities are mainly defined by the gear they pick up, you will want a book or two of weird classic D&D magic items for an interesting sustained campaign.

Easily one of the best minimalist OSR rulesets available.

Neoclassical Geek Revival Basic 2nd Edition

This is a very interesting set of rules for running an OSR game. If you just want to use it to mine some interesting ideas, it's great! It has some interesting and systematic ways of looking at hit points vs meat points, tracking ongoing stealth and social situations rather than using binary sucess/failure rolls, and dozens of other interesting ideas.

On the other hand, the total system presented ends up feeling quite fiddly, with lots of decision points for players. This is obviously a positive for players who want more crunchy conflict resolution, but my preference in OSR games is for more streamlined rules, not less, so it misses top marks from me.

Low Fantasy Gaming (Original)

LFG is an interesting, more swords & sorcery take on D&D 5e or Pathfinder. While it labels itself "low fantasy", and it is indeed more deadly than 3.0 and later editions of D&D, it is more grim than gritty, with lots of room for heroics, including explicit rules for doing rule-of-cool stuff in combat, and explicit retreat mechanics. It also uses a Luck attribute, similar to Fighting Fantasy and Warlock!, rather than classical saving throws.

If youre looking for a lower power but still heroic rule set a 5e table would be comfortable transitioning to, this fits the bill.

This is a less ink-intensive and more practical character sheet than the one provided in the book, though it does hav a bit less "character".

This supplement is for any DM running Tomb of Annihilation who gets bored with the limited number of dinosaurs (and especially zombie dinosaurs) in the book. I personally got really bored running the same encounters for multiple groups, and the variety of new dinos helped me keep things fresh. Also a must-have if your players aren't scared of the CR 8 T-Rex and you want something with a little more oomph.

CCC-CIC-11 Death at Peril Island

While not the most ground-breaking or innovative adventure (pirates! a mysterious island warded by magic!), I really enjoyed running Death at Peril Island. It is excellent as a mod to run at a convention or without extensive amounts of prep.

Do note that it leans more heavily on the exploration and combat tiers than social interaction, however. This is exactly what my players are looking for in our one shot AL sessions, though, so it worked great for me, and I would recommend it to event organizers for game days or any situation where a DM has less than ideal prep time.
