Very underwhelming to be honest.

The author is responsible for some amazing modules and modifications of existing modules - but this table is very much "free" quality.

Very handy and waaaay better than winging it during the battle.

5 stars for sure.

I use this all the time. My sister rolls natural ones pretty reliably, and these tables make sure they have an impact on the encounter, often with cool narrative results. The groans of dread and titters of anticipation from my players are well worth the cost.

This product gives a number of flavourful (and sometimes amusing!) options for when a player rolls a natural 1 on an attack, the infamous 'critical miss' from older editions of the game. They are split up by attack type (melee, ranged, thrown, spell) and give around 10 options for each type. In addition, there is a small sidebar giving advice on how to deal with players complaining about 'too many fumbles' if they have multiple attacks per round.

There are a few minor grammatical errors that could have been caught with a final editing run and I would have liked to have seen a brief overview of the concept of critical misses in game design and how the product tries to address the challenges. By their very nature, critical misses can end up prolonging the mechanics of combat through additional rolls and minimising these elements should be a design goal in my opinion.

For anyone wanting a streamlined critical miss solution, picking this up is a no-brainer and definitely worth throwing some virtual loose change the way of the author to keep him producing more.

Up til now I have been using Hargrave's tables, percentile dice. This is more streamlined and covers most of the more obvious mishaps, though there is something to be said for the detail of the old percentile tables.

I like that there are tables based on attack types. Some of the results can be really fun. My only objection is that magic weapons shouldn't break that easily.

Hi Chris, thanks for your review. For a magical melee weapon to break would be 1/20 (rolling a 1 on your attack) x 1/10 (weapon break result) x 1/10 (magical weapon breaks) = 1/2000 attacks. Depends on your tastes, but it's not very likely to happen. It would be pretty epic if it did and then could set up an interesting side quest to somehow reforge the weapon in question.
