This module felt disjointed and forced. The roleplay in the city was brief, and didn't have much meat to it. I made it interesting by having the ghost possess the druid in the party, though in all it felt very forced. I enjoyed the cave fisher encounter, though it seemed especially easy. I think some backstory on all of this would have improved the module. As the DM. remember that you're empowered to add content/lore to make the adventure more enjoyable.

Ghost as an encounter is not a good idea, especially that it is hard to calculate the time when the players see Matthew. Moreover, the curse is disgusting ;/ If you have characters that would level up into 2nd tier after this adventure you basically make it so they have to have this curse for the rest of thier adventures, which is not a good adventure design. The high-DC throw for realizing that you are in an ancient city makes no sense whatsoever, especially if you played the first part, as you are constantly remainded of that fact. The cave fisher encounter, on the other hand, is great, but that is one of the few things that is good about this adventure.

This was a disjointed adventure and I cannot recommend this series. Our group finished this 2 hour "adventure" in a little less than a 1 hour. We would have finished it even quicker but we role played with the ghosts for a while not knowing what to do in that section. Our group consisted of a Barbarian, a Bard, a Druid, a Fighter, a Rogue, and a Warlock ranging from level 2 to 3.

Some thoughts on things in the Adventure:

  • We finished it so quickly because we are not murderhobos. The ghost encounter was set up poorly. Basically what you see is a kid and an old man and it isnt until much later that you find out that he's a ghost. But by that time, you already have built a friendship with him and hte kid and any combat against them would seem very forced. There didnt seem to a reason to even have this part of the adventure. There should be a different encounter here, maybe the oppressive forces from part 3 should attack the city and the characters come to the ghosts defense.
  • Also buying the healing potions only to have them disappear when you leave the city is a terrible thing to do to Tier 1 players as 50 gp is a significant investment for them.
  • The Part 3 combat with the Cave Fisher was fun but underwhelming.

As others have mentioned, this mod runs short. However, the major encounters are quite interesting. The setting has a lot of flavor.

The adventure hook and setting for this adventure is the biggest sell to me as to the quality. The combat and roleplay was not too extravegant. I enjoyed the modle and would continue with the series though.

This module is pretty enjoyable. The ending feels like a "To be continued" moment. The timing of the module is a bit rough. If the party does everything correctly, we can finish in an hour. If they decide to get a bit murdery, it can take up to 4 hours.

There's some very good stuff in this short adventure, but some things that really need clarification. I think some fundamental flaws with the how the encounters are laid out and described, and how they scale with the difficulty level.

Highs:

  • Very cool ghost story in the town, with a lot of opportunity for nice roleplaying.
  • It is nice giving players a chance to return to the environment of the previous adventure, and note the impact of whatever changes they made to the environment.
  • Builds off of the previous adventure in interesting ways. The returning players were excited to tell the new players what happened and to embelish the narration (jungle in the darkness).
  • The second encounter is cool, in theory at least.
  • If players didn't kill S'saxx in the previous adventure, there's a good spot to have her ambush the party. This keeps the Chitine/Choldrith plot from feeling as dropped as it did in the current Part 2 and Part 3 (they are only mentioned, but never really show up).

Lows:

  • The ending point is kind of awkward. I don't think adventures like this deal well with what is essentially a "To Be Continued" for another adventure. It is odd to say "And that's the end of this story! See you in Part 3."
  • Neither of the encounters really scale well with difficulty. Whatever changes are/were made based on difficulty need to be adjusted. Both, as written, are pretty simple with very little strategy or tactics, as they are against 1 enemy for several of the difficulties.
  • There needs to be more guidance on how some aspects of the plotting work. Does Detect Magic just completely blow a hole in any suspsense? Could there be some more description on how to actually handle the second encounter? Is it just supposed to be attacking the Darklings and ignoring the players?

Overall, this felt very underwhelming. I got this at the last minute and was just as surprised and let down as my players openly were when it ended as quickly as it did.

There are opportunities for more combat, but as my group isn't murderhoboing, all they ended up fighting was the last encounter. Done in about an hour, when normally it takes them 3-4 to finish a 2hr module.

Part 1 was good, hopefully part 3 is too.

This is a great adventure series. There is a good balance of roleplay opportunities and combat. This second installment is set for 2 hours but both times I have run it took around an hour.

There are numerous editing issues (mispellings, etc.) that could be addressed but they do not take away from the adventure at all.

I highly recommend this series.
