Lion & Dragon

Lion & Dragon is an excellent choice for those who love medieval fantasy role-playing games, especially if you prefer a setting with less magic. It's set in a world much like England during the 14th and 15th centuries, around the time of the War of the Roses.

The game's system, including the way leveling, classes, races, and backgrounds work together, is well-thought-out and balanced. It focuses more on the role and story of your character rather than just the mechanics listed on your character sheet.

What really stands out is the magic system. It fits perfectly into a medieval, low-fantasy world, making the magical abilities of characters feel natural in this setting.

The creator has done a great job of blending a traditional old-school role-playing system with a medieval world. This is better than many other games I've come across in this genre.

I also got the Campaign Book: Dark Albion and the Cults & Chaos supplement, and I can say they're great additions. They add depth and richness to the world and are worth getting alongside the main game.

My main critique is about the book's layout. It could use more bullet points, quick references, and a better index. The style is dense with text, much like the early AD&D books. While it's a great read (I've gone through it twice from start to finish), it's not the easiest to use during a game when you need to find information quickly.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend Lion & Dragon to anyone who enjoys old-school d20 games and wants a game set in a historical period.

D&D Solo Adventure: The Death Knight's Squire (Fantasy Grounds)

Preface: A couple of weeks ago I found the old Ravenloft adventure and skimmed through it. It brought a smile to my face, remembering playing DnD in the 1980s. It was also slightly depressing, because I was interested in playing, but my circumstances (travel / virus / lockdown / distant friends) means attempting to rekindle the game was going to be nothing more then fond memories. I thought I would search for solo adventures - thinking it would be a waste of time and it brought me to this website. I read the reviews of Death Knight and thought - perhaps this will rekindle my spirit and enjoy the game. I noticed TWO versions, PDF and something called Fantasy Grounds. A quick search on youtube and I found Fantasy Grounds to be exactly what someone like me needs - in order to play other people. I also found a video of someone playing Death Knight Squire on Fantasy Grounds - I watched only the first 10 minutes - because I did NOT want to spoil the adventure.

A couple of hours getting up to speed on Fantasy Grounds and loading the model, creating a character, and I was ready.

The magic of DnD is really the story telling and interaction with friends. As an author, I was impressed with the story telling of Death Knight, it brought me back to the 1980s and the feeling of going off on an adventure. I enjoyed the writing enough to purchase the bundle with the first 4 adventures.

Well - my first adventure ended up with a dead wizard. I figure I made it pretty far, but be cautious of traps - a bad die roll and I was surrounded by cultist and that didn't go well. So - I rerolled a new character and this time made it all the way to the end. Reading through the story, I realized I missed a lot and that means replayability. Seems like there are some hidden items and more loot to be found.

If you are like me and want to get back into DnD or if you are new - this is an excellent way to start. I highly recommend Death Knights Squire for Fantasy Grounds.

Why:

  1. It will help you become familar with both the character generation, player role, and DM role in the Fantasy Ground system.
  2. It is a great way to learn the combat system of DnD and how easy it can be on Fantasy Ground.
  3. A replayable adventure with different characters, to build up some XP and stats - great practice for games with others.
  4. A gateway adventure to introduce others to DnD.
  5. It is a great story and well written.

Recommendations: The following bundle for newbies.

That is all you need!

Thanks again for bringing me back to DnD. I am now off to find the Tyrant of Zhentil Keep!

=================== Notes: This is a short adventure - for newbies and low level characters. It introduces basic mechanics of the game, basic combat, and provides great story telling. The story is fairly liner, but that is great for first time adventures. Because of the entry level adventure - it may not be suitable for experienced players and I would recommend one of the other solo adventures - perhaps the next one made for characters level 3. This is a great intro for newbies or those like me trying to get back into the game.
