I just purchased this and played it through. I had a great time! The conversion to Fantasy Grounds was high quality and I had no problems with the the interface or the workings of the quest. The story was engaging. The challenge ws appropriate. It was hard enough to be challenging and victory was not assured. However, it was not so overwhelming that a level 2 character would most likely get killed. There was exploring as well as battle. I spent a number of hours happily tracking down the big bad guy, who did indeed turn out to be scary.

It is REPLAYABLE. I know several people who have played it many times. You can also run a friend through it. This is our TOP selling adventure. Sorry you were disappointed, Steven.
Also, please keep in mind that I only TRANSLATE the PDF author's creation. I didn't WRITE the adventure. I hope you will reconsider your rating based on the quality of the Fantasy Grounds module rather than the story which I had no control over. ThanX!

Since I figured out my Fantasy Grounds Unity Kickstarter, I started looking around for what I could with it and found this product. I always wanted to like choose your own path type adventures but the ones I have played (or I could be just really bad at these things) always devolve into choose your own death or they are so restrictive that they lack any real choice. I played through this one and I was pleasantly surprised. I played a sneaky gnome thief and I was almost taken out early but made my save and pulled through. After some cautious play, great dice for me, and crap dice for them, I made it through to a win of sorts. It wasn't the winniest win but I made it through and accomplished my goal and got paid so a win enough for me! I liked the way the author tells you that due to the wide range of abilities 5e PCs have, sometimes you have just have to made your own call and think through what would happen. I like this approach quite a bit, too loose and you really don't have a product, too tight and you pretty much have a railroad and miss a large part of the 5e experience. As for replayability, it isn't really super great for that but if I randomly picked my new path and played a different PC like a fighter with no stealth capability, my experience will be much different for most of the adventure. Using Fantasy Grounds is a great way to do the choose your own mechanics, go to the right map, click on the right narrative, roll dice, and then when the situation calls for it, run through combat, and so on. If I had to do it manually (and you can, PDFs are available), it will take more time. So I bought the rest of his products and I am getting to start the 2nd adventure which has many sidequests and looks to be a larger and longer adventure. I am brushing up on my 5e rules knowledge (I am more of B/Xer which I think would be great for solo games) and I am looking forward to the new adventure. I was happy to read in the next adventure that I can take max HP at each level. I also have played some of the better known PC games and while I like them (love the spell effects), I prefer this for solo play. I will be using Fantasy Ground Classics for the next adventures but it worked fine with Fantasy Grounds Unity as far as I could tell.

I bought this a while ago and got a bit overwealmed by the sequence of things. Spent some time with FG's free tutorial and tried again.
I foound the game helped me understand the different sequences with FG and how to DM as a beginner. That said, getting into the game with a solo character was enjoyable and I it stands up to the equality and detail of having a DM run you through the storyline.
Only con I had...(spoiler alert) content saying to print out a pdf of the adventure and map booklet for specifica pages to be referenced later. The contents are intact, but finding which one in reference to the back of the map booklet was a bit out of context, with common sense though any adventurer will be able to figure what it was referencing.
Looking forward to getting the continuation of the other solo quests and possibliy the solo campaign builder.

I appreciate the review. Just so you know, when we make the Fantasy Grounds version from the original PDF, we recreate the text faithfully, so when it says to print out a PDF, that was from the original text. We are "translators" rather than editors. Glad you enjoyed it. As it was a faithful recreation of the material I hope you will reconsider your 4-star review (we'd love to get a 5). I feel that the issue you had would more appropriately be applied to the original text rather than our conversion.
ThanX again!

Preface:
A couple of weeks ago I found the old Ravenloft adventure and skimmed through it. It brought a smile to my face, remembering playing DnD in the 1980s. It was also slightly depressing, because I was interested in playing, but my circumstances (travel / virus / lockdown / distant friends) means attempting to rekindle the game was going to be nothing more then fond memories. I thought I would search for solo adventures - thinking it would be a waste of time and it brought me to this website. I read the reviews of Death Knight and thought - perhaps this will rekindle my spirit and enjoy the game. I noticed TWO versions, PDF and something called Fantasy Grounds. A quick search on youtube and I found Fantasy Grounds to be exactly what someone like me needs - in order to play other people. I also found a video of someone playing Death Knight Squire on Fantasy Grounds - I watched only the first 10 minutes - because I did NOT want to spoil the adventure.
A couple of hours getting up to speed on Fantasy Grounds and loading the model, creating a character, and I was ready.
The magic of DnD is really the story telling and interaction with friends. As an author, I was impressed with the story telling of Death Knight, it brought me back to the 1980s and the feeling of going off on an adventure. I enjoyed the writing enough to purchase the bundle with the first 4 adventures.
Well - my first adventure ended up with a dead wizard. I figure I made it pretty far, but be cautious of traps - a bad die roll and I was surrounded by cultist and that didn't go well. So - I rerolled a new character and this time made it all the way to the end. Reading through the story, I realized I missed a lot and that means replayability. Seems like there are some hidden items and more loot to be found.
If you are like me and want to get back into DnD or if you are new - this is an excellent way to start. I highly recommend Death Knights Squire for Fantasy Grounds.
Why:
- It will help you become familar with both the character generation, player role, and DM role in the Fantasy Ground system.
- It is a great way to learn the combat system of DnD and how easy it can be on Fantasy Ground.
- A replayable adventure with different characters, to build up some XP and stats - great practice for games with others.
- A gateway adventure to introduce others to DnD.
- It is a great story and well written.
Recommendations: The following bundle for newbies.
That is all you need!
Thanks again for bringing me back to DnD. I am now off to find the Tyrant of Zhentil Keep!
===================
Notes: This is a short adventure - for newbies and low level characters. It introduces basic mechanics of the game, basic combat, and provides great story telling. The story is fairly liner, but that is great for first time adventures. Because of the entry level adventure - it may not be suitable for experienced players and I would recommend one of the other solo adventures - perhaps the next one made for characters level 3. This is a great intro for newbies or those like me trying to get back into the game.

Played this twice so far, a single human Paladin (died in the Tortured Lands) and then with two chars, a female half-elf ranger and a male half-orc barbarian (still alive, just finished The Citadel of the Raven) - loving it!
The two playthroughs took a fairly similar "route" but it played very differently and so I haven't scratched the surface of this Adventure ... .
The conversion into a FG module is done pretty well and takes a lot/almost all of the book-keeping of your shoulders so the combat plays very smooth even within the "bigger" fights. As a new player to 5e and a returning one to FG this adventure allowed my to learn the abilities of the three classes pretty well as well as the capabilities of FG running 5e.
Again highly recommended, and I can see me playing this with others as DM with a group or DM+1 too :-).

More than just a bunch of tables and stat blocks! I have played this through five times and every time was different! Can be played with a friend as well. Hundreds of story entries and varying paths to choose throughout the adventure. Well written and the FG version makes everything simple - just one click and the next part pops up. Well worth the price!

I got this because I am new to Fantasy Grounds and wanted to see how all the mechanics worked while I wait to play online.
Unfortunately not many of the mechanics are present in this module. I understand why they are presented the way thet are, just wish there could be a way of getting the mechanics to work (encounters, treasure, combat).
The adventure itself is a bit constrained but I certainly enjoyed playing it. It is very narrow and limited in the choices one can make. Still enjoyable.

Sorry you had a disappointment with this. I want to be able to help you. Being "new to Fantasy Grounds" it may have been frustrating for you to know how to operate all the automation as Fantasy Grounds has many facets and has a steep learning curve. I invite you to take some FREE classes over at "Fantasy Grounds College" and when you get a better feel for the software, try that adventure again (as it is very replayable with many different outcomes).
If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact me directly in my Discord. All details are in the module.
I hope you will, after replaying it, consider changing your 3-star review to a higher one.
ThanX, and I hope to hear back when you've replayed the adventure...

This was my first experience with a Solo Adventure (Fantasy Grounds or otherwise), and as a D&D lover who is a "Forever-DM", I really truly loved it. The story is captivating, the characters are interesting, and the way that you play through it as an interactive "choose your own adventure story", is ingenious. Really, great work by the authors and great work by the converter (Rob2e).

Usually I'm DM and I have not much opportunities to play. This was great experience. My first run was smooth and didn't take long (as if I made all good choices on the way) but I will definitely play it again with different character - to see other parts of story.
From DM's point of view - structure could be better but I understand why author made it this way... also - I want to be a player again. This was fun.

A great thing for someone who is learning Fantasy Grounds. I sort of must have stumbled on the shortest rout to the end though, and the adventure was rather short for my character. But I guess it was just a freak occurrence.
