Great solo adventure. Actually my first real D&D adventure ever! I've been wanting to play as long as I could remember, but never knew anyone to play with (kinda still dont). Anyhow, my son expressed intrest so I jumped on it, but I wanted to get a little experience in before doing to much with him (we're also trying to rope my wife in) and/or finding/joining a group. Anyhow, had a blast, learned a lot, and I'm about to get the next one! Thank you so much for making these - lots of folks say it can't be done, but this was a great adventure with a lot of depth that was a joy to play, and all the solo mechanics worked beautifully!

An amazing solo adventure! Easy reading, simple mechanics a good alternance of epic and funny moments should be the main features of a d&d adventure to play alone and this one fully fit them. There are 2 more chapters of this adventure. They have a bit more complexity, but still enjoyble. Hopefully this saga will continue.

This is an awesome product and fills a niche that has been lacking for some time. If you enjoyed the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books of the past and want to practice your 5e rules this is the perfect product for you to use.

I enjoyed this adventure a lot, even running my warlock back in to make sure that I really killed the Death Knight. This was a really fun way to run through a text-based adventure, with my character sheet in hand!

Enjoyed it a lot. Not sure what the consequence is yet when it comes to dealing with the blood knight, was confused and thought I missed something but I guess that is a problem for the next adventure. Everything else is pretty top notch, it truly functions like a choose your own adventure book. Played it with a second player and still flowed nicely. We hit a nice stride after we figured out the mechanics, definitely worth a shot.

Definitly enjoyed every moment of this adventure. Had many moments where it made me really think about decisions and had some close calls during combat and it gave many options with different outcomes on how to proceed. Very keen to play the next chapter sometime soon.

A lot of work went into fleshing out each map tile and putting a lot of content into the book. It can be finished quite quickly though (I managed to choose all the right paths and did it in about 2 hours). I would have liked a few more social choices, rather than being kinda railroaded on how your PC acts. I liked the lore and I thought the story was simple but well crafted, especially enjoyed the origin of the Death Knight. The combat was quite easy as a Paladin, high AC made the encounters trivial and divine smite tears things apart at low level, I'd advise picking ranger/rogue/sorc/lock to get the most out of the play through. I'll definetely give it another go with a different class, just to explore some of the other routes and options.

I don't want to say it isn't worth the money, because it is carefully crafted and contains a good amount of content, but I think the playtime and lack of social choices does let it down a little. Maybe a started bundle with the first two in this series would be better. Worth a look if you want a solid solo one-shot, or if you want something simple to introduce new players to D&D.

This product offers a little bit of fun and could fill 1-2 hours of your time, but that being said I don't think it's worth the money. Perhaps if he packaged 5 of these together it would be worth $10 but as it stands I feel like it was over extremely quickly and wasn't fun enough that I really wanted more. If you are lookng for anything even close to multiplayer player D&D, this has a good chance of disappointing. It is well done for what it is. But it is a mistake to expect more than a basic choose your own adventure crawl. The nature of the medium just limits meaingful character based story in a way that makes "solo style" play much more bland than group play.

This was a lot of fun. It isn't a simple adventure and offers for many paths and choices. I found it challenging, the last battle really could have gone either way. And as a solo adventurer, I wasn't taking too many risks, which probably made the module less exciting ... not sure if I would have survived otherwise. I am really looking forward to the next adventure, and maybe at 3rd level I can afford more risks :)

A wonderful fusion of the old and new

"The Death Knight's Squire" delivers on the promise of the DM's Guild marketplace, offering a professional product at a low price-point that fills an important niche that WoTC clearly has no intention of directly servicing.

This PDF combines a traditional numbered-paragraph gamebook format with a 5E dungeon-crawl structure. It presents a short adventure in a haunted forest, fully grid-mapped, with several combats and a wide range of non-combat interactions. It's well written, attractively presented, and appropriately playtested. Most individual encounters feel fair, and there's class-specific things to do for most, if not all, core PHB classes. The icing on the cake is that the entries in the digital product are all hyperlinked, removing the irritation of flicking through pages (although this feature does not work in all PDF readers - Adobe is recommended). "The Death Knight's Squire" is absolutely perfect for scratching the itch for a bit of DM-less D&D, and I highly recommend it for anyone who might possibly be interested in such a product.

There are some downsides - but please take them in the context of a five-star recommendation overall:

  • The adventure runs a couple of hours at most, and has limited replayability, which is poor dollars-for-time ratio compared with other DM's Guild products. However, it does feature original artwork and full-colour maps for your money.
  • The module promises grid-mapped combats suitable for miniature play, but in practice these are almost entirely melee slugfests with no terrain interaction and insufficient space to use ranged attacks without disadvantage. Maps and minis feel irrelevant.
  • For the above reasons, ranged-specialist characters will have a frustrating time with the module.
  • As far as I can see, taking the time to explore the map is not generally rewarded - the most satisfying victory and best treasures lie along a fairly direct route.

Nevertheless, this is the rare sort of DM's Guild product I expect to find myself recommending to others in casual conversation for some time to come. Author Paul Bimler should be proud of accomplishing so much in such a small package, and potential buyers should go ahead and add this to their cart immediately.

(NOTE: The module is also available in a Fantasy Grounds format, but the Fantasy Grounds version is NOT included in this package - it must be purchased separately.)

Thanks for the review Greg! I think you're right regarding "melee slugfests" something I've tried to address in subsequent solo adventures. However, it remains a challenge in the solo format. Tyrant of Zhentil Keep contains more developed monster tactics, and I'm always thinking about how I can edge this format closer to resembling a full DM'd style of play.

Played this through once with my wife where we both played characters (increasing quantity/stats of some of the foes to make it fair), and once on my own to return and finish some things that were left undone the first time through. Really enjoyed it both times and it is obvious a lot of thought went into both the story and the structure that allows it to be played solo.

Already bought and started part 2 of the series and loving that too! Thanks so much!

First, I want to thank you for creating this fantastic adventure. It is wonderful and allows me to play in between my weekly game wit ease. It is terrific fun and has more replayability than I first thought. As a bonus, it allows me to try different classes than I am used to. Worth Every Cent!

Awesome, thanks! If you run out of replayability, I've written quite a few other solo adventures too! :)

It's entertaining, for sure, and very well done. However, I had an issue with the climactic battle sequence. The DK is given four separate stat blocks as the fight proceeds; in the first, he's got 32 HP; the second and third, 28 HP; and the fourth, "28 (minus dmg already caused)". The only "escape" out of the fight comes after we get to the fourth stat block. The wording, along with the changing HP in the stat blocks, seems to imply damage done has no effect on him, or removes only 4 HP, until late in the fight.

Since the first part of the fight is broken out by round, I expected every outcome of each of those rounds to be enumerated. So, if "He's down" isn't listed as an option, then the obvious conclusion is he can't be down yet.

I don't know if this is an error in the wording, or an oversight in the options, or if the DK magically regains hit points up to 28 after each of the first three rounds, but I found it confusing -- I pulverized the guy and yet the only option was to keep on fighting. And so I wasted a bunch of time trying to figure out what was supposed to happen here, which was frustrating.

I came in as a L2 high-dex light cleric, succeeded on the stealth check getting into the room (first time in the game, I think -- clanky armor gave me away every other time), got a surprise round, won initiative, and for those two rounds I hit with two guiding bolts in a row for 33 points in damage, and ... there was no indication in the choice lists that I could do anything except go on enduring attack after attack by the DK, who was at negative hit points by that time. Second round in initiative order, a high roll on Radiance of the Dawn put him down to -21 hit points (all radiant damage) -- but he went right on attacking; there was no option for ending the fight, until I finally got to DukeItOut.

He's a heavily modified monster, so referring to the MM to figure out whether he was using some kind of magical healing which should have been mentioned, or if there were just some choices missing from the action lists, didn't help.

I've been playing fantasy RPGs and solo game books for over 30 years and I have to say The Death Knight's Squire is one of the most balanced and engaging solo play experiences I have had in years.

To be honest I was initially skeptical of the stated openness of being able to play any character type from the Player's Handbook but having now played through the adventure twice sucessfully I can honestly say it is balanced enough to make all classes viable options.

I'm now off to buy the next adventure in the series and I can say if you like 5e D&D and are looking for a fun, balanced fully realized adventure experience I HIGHLY recommend The Death Knight's Squire.

Thanks for an enjoyable experience and I look forward to more!
