This adventure is simply incredible. I haven't enjoyed DM'ing an adventure like I did this one in many many years. The suggested price is honestly WAY too low on this for the huge amount of work the author has clearly put into it. I could rave about the adventure for some time, but I will limit myself to a few remarks.

This adventure is a pure pleasure to read. The amount of content that is here for the DM's enjoyment is staggering. It was awesome to find an author create content for the players AND the DM! It sure made running it a lot of fun. Poems, informational tid-bits, and even the editing help immerse you into the world as the DM. This adventure will likely be played over several play sessions and your players will be stuck in Elysium for some time. This is how it should be. There is much to explore and learn here! It took my players almost 20 hours to complete and they still didn't seem to scratch the surface of what is provided here. Honestly, don't let that scare you, though. It is well worth the time and effort.

I would note that the adventure probably isn't for novice DM's. In order to do it justice, you'll want to prepare it well and know it well. It requires a good understanding of how the city and atmosphere the author has created works. If you prepare well, though, your players will have a wonderful time.

The author has pretty much created a mini campaign setting. If you are looking for a place to start even new characters in, I could easily see being able to take this adventure and expanding it into a perfect Lovecraftian type of campaign setting for your players. You'd want to expand a bit on what the author has started, but with the huge amount of work done here, it wouldn't be too hard!

Amazing work, loved it!

A FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR THE AUTHOR (Contains Spoilers!!!):

  • It was somewhat difficult figuring out what exactly Cecilia's part was in this whole thing, what and why she was doing what she was doing, and what actions she had taken and in what order. Likewise, what caused the infliction to her. I would highly recommend a brief overview of Cecilia, her character traits (not numerical traits, but simply who she is), what she has been up to, what actions she's taken, and how exactly she ended up where she was. She's an important character and could use some more help.

  • There are a couple of random effects that were a bit too overwhelming. First, the Dragon's Charm curse should be also be able to be removed by a wish spell. I had one PC that literally NO ONE loves. Fortunately, he can cast the remove curse spell himself and he loves himself. I can see situations where this could permanently ruin things for a character. Second, the mirror at the end that annihilates anyone who touches it beyond bringing them back is too damaging. By Level 15-20, players have put a LOT of time into characters. There isn't enough foreshadowing or warning to offset such a HUGE risk. Perhaps require a wish spell only, or a miracle from a God, or permanent level drain upon resurrection.

  • Consider placing Elysium in the Far Realms, but obviously this is just personal preference! Either way, I'd make "The Beginning" and "The Wheel" endings a bit more interesting and rewarding. In both cases, perhaps return Elysium to it's original plane/existence in both endings (only to be slowly returned back to the Shadowfell as the 15000 years starts to come to an end). That would make the playable races and backgrounds more useful to players in the future as they build new characters. Likewise, it would probably make the characters heroes to all Elysians and would give them a city they are now very much attached to. Finally, "The Wheel" ending trapping them there forever also seemed a bit harsh (especially for players who have put so much time into their characters.)

  • Seriously, it is an amazing adventure and we all loved it!!!

Cody, Thank you so much for the thoughtful and thorough review. It means a lot - this campaign setting has been an ongoing effort for some time, and when someone comes back to me and says "I loved it" it makes it all worthwhile. Your suggestions are very insightful, and some of them are things I've worked on in the Second Edition, which is available now here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/259794 [If you've already sprung for this edition, feel free to contact me on my Twitter at @deathbybadger for a free copy, I think you'll find it much improved, and you might find some of your questions answered.] Sounds like you plugged the leaking parts just fine on your lonesome though :P Oliver

Realy looking forward to running it with my players

Dear Iain, I'm glad you like it. Let me know how running it goes! If you check out the sidebar on page 9, I do note the absence of maps, and why. It's mostly for practical reasons - Elysium can and should be ever-changing and mutable. If you run into scenarios where you can't remember what room you placed where, you're doing it right! Also, if anyone has time to bring up cartographical nuances, you aren't throwing enough illithids at them. :D Good luck out there. Bring an umbrella.

"Lovecraftian" is a cheap adjective. So often do story-tellers slap a Cthulhu into a pulp story and call it lovecraft, completely ignoring what made Lovecraft special: cosmic horror. The universe is a vast uncaring place, and there are things out there that exceed human comprehension. Its not the fear of the unknown, its the fear of the unknowable. Its the dread that comes with realizing just how insignificant you are in the vastness of the cosmos.

THIS adventure is lovecraftian.

The City of Eyes captures that feeling. The City of Eyes cannot be understood. To do so would drive you mad. The City of Eyes cannot be conquered. To try would kill you. The City of Eyes can only be survived.

Its dark, dreary, dreadful, and dripping with flavor. ...but leans on very few established horror tropes and cliches. (that I could recognize) It instead provides a world and locations that feel truly unique and INSPIRED. Each location is vaguely understandable, but also inexplicable, odd and surreal in ways that drags you and your players in with a dreadful desire to know more.

This module is puuuure value. For the price, the quality and quantity of the content cannot be beat. If you are interested in a truly original and inspired horror adventure, or just a rich setting to pull from, this is a must-have.

The atmosphere is great. The new additions to suit the environment are great. The NPCs are great. The room descriptions for locations are great.

However, there are no maps to go with the locations. While the overall city map being missing makes sense from the description, the individual locales should be offered. In essence, this is about half to two-thirds of a module.

Dear Anonymous, I'm sorry you feel the module is incomplete. I would suggest you read some of the areas more closely, and perhaps you might understand why for the majority of the locations (being extremely mutable, as is the nature of Elysium) a map is sadly impractical. If you want to drop me a line on my twitter, I'm always happy to lend a hand where I can - Elysium was and remains a labour of love, and where it's possible to improve on it I regularly work to do so

I find the "city of eyes" a fascinating setting. Although incomplete, the setting has enough support to keep a group busy for a long time.   It is the best parts of Ravenloft and reminds our group of 2e in the best way. I look forward to more.

Now completed, the city of eyes is truly an incredible addition to ravenloft campaigns. There is much to do and many things that will keep players guessing.

Hey, Rick. I've just released the last chapter, so there should be enough here to run it from start to finish (if you were so inclined).

This collection of resources provides a beautiful, dark, and twisted setting for a Ravenloft campaign. In terms of mood, theme, and feel, the City of Eyes makes for a Domain of Dread that rivals Barovia itself! The additional races, backgrounds, items, and creatures introduced herein are exquisite and bear the perfect flavor of desperate, lovecraftian horror.

The story is well crafted, and instills a sense of mounting desperation in the players with the inclusion of a rather brilliant ticking clock mechanic. For the amount of content included, the price point cannot be beat.

The only negative note I have is that the latter half of the material needs some proofreading attention. I suspect that this is due to the product undergoing serialized updates over time, and that the creator will be correcting the issues soon, but as of this writing there is much to be done. These typos stand out as a rather unfortunate blemish on an otherwise beautiful work of wordsmithing.

Despite those issues, I HIGHLY recommend The City of Eyes if you love horror and desperation.

While "The City of Eyes" may currently be incomplete from a campaign standpoint, there is more than enough in even the incomplete book to keep players running through a rich and dreary world for quite some time. The author is communicative and releases new content regularly. Definitely a recommended buy.

A fascinating world with a lore-rich cast of npcs and plenty of places for characters to explore. I'm looking forward for the rest of the chapters to be released, and the rest of the story with it! There's always another surprise to spring on unsuspecting players hidden in the City of Eyes.
