Maze Rats

Love this little system. It has plenty to pull from and use in other games - tables are great, advice is solid - but the game itself is a nice rules light affair aimed at fantasy adventure gaming. Easy to grab and go, a handful of d6 and some scratch paper and there's a game.

Still updating the PDF in 2024 so I figure I owed a review that's quite overdue.

OSR Cosmic Horror Solo Roleplaying
Publisher: Parts Per Million

PPM does a great job introducing solo concepts and tailoring a starting toolkit. Solo is very personal, and no two players solo the exact same way.

OSR Cosmic Horror Solo is one of the broadest products on offer from PPM and gives a really nice starter toolbox. You get a yes/no oracle, a twist mechanic, complex questions, a conversation (tone) oracle, a scenario generator, the oncoming horror mechanic and lots of advice for how to solo, how to solo and investigation, and how to solo the genre. Again, this is a ready made kit for playing OSR eldritch horror games - and it works just fine out of the box. I really appreciate the explanations of how to use the tools, and the optionality discussed.

Because ultimately, solo roleplaying for most people is assembling a variety of tools for different use cases. Here's a handful of tools that have broad applicability that are dialed in for the genre, and so using just and your favorite OSR rules, you've got a solo game. Or, you can take pieces and mix in other tools easily.

I love the oncoming horror mechanic - a suit of cards represents a force acting against you, but the Ace is the trigger. I also appreciate how straightforward and relatively simple the investigation mechanic is here. This is for emergent mysteries, not traditional pre-plotted gm-led story puzzles. PPM products are scene based, so the tools are built around having discrete scenes. This works for me, but I do know not everyone likes that format.

If you are at all interested in solo (or just GM less) play using some combination of OSR, Cosmic Horror, Investigations, then I can easily recommend this product as a starting point or a supplement to raid.

The GameMaster's Apprentice: Fantasy Deck

I got the base deck first, and picked this up for the Prompt Icons to have the alternate randomizer.

I loved it more than I expected to. Similar to other story icon generators, you flip over as many as you want/need and interpret. While the rest of the card works exactly like the base deck but has a fantasy slant to the prompts, the icons are useful enough I've taken to keeping this deck on hand just for those. Best modification to the base deck of all the sets in my mind.

I love the GMA decks - they are flexible and easy to use a little, a lot, or to entirely drive your game. I highly recommend getting at least one set if you regularly play solo or GM.

The GameMaster's Apprentice: Demon Hunters

I love the base deck - and have been using it for nearly 2 years. I wanted to get the other decks with unique randomizers - so I picked up the Demon Hunters deck for the source material and specialities.

The only real downside to the supplemental decks is the repetition with the base deck - these all feel adjusted from the base deck rather than truly different. Not too much of a problem if you use the decks independently, but it does mean there's only limited utility in mashing them together.

It's still the GMA at heart, it's still wonderful for inspiration or as a tool in the toolbox to help bring in randomized elements or even to drive a whole game from just the cards. I have used these for a couple of one off games - it's so easy to get the outline of an NPC or to quickly get a hook to build a scene off of.

I love the decks, and the minor quibble above does not prevent this from being perfectly useable.

I picked up the PDF versions a while ago - printed and played. I enjoyed them so much I came back for a POD version.

The cards are really easy to use - for each piece of information, flip a new card and take the corresponding value.

I got this originally to use to help plan my 1shots and online campaign. I've since incorporated them into some solo play, and even have played just using the cards to resolve everything. I've found them useful as a supplement to my dice and oracle and inspiration charts, and I've found them useful to drive everything off the cards. Very handy - very flexible, and neither way feels like it is too litte/too much. This is very much a flexible tool that can fill different niches for different games/sessions/playstyles.

The base deck is an easy recommend and will fit in to a large variety of games. Also check out the ALONe rules for more ideas on how to use the cards, and look at ways to graft it to your other tools or ruleset.

Amazing Tales, complete kids' RPG
Publisher: Amazing Tales
by Christopher H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/01/2021 12:00:41

2 years ago I was on a quest to find an RPG that my son would want to play that 1) didn't have too many special rule cases 2) could start a new adventure with less than 10 minutes prep 3) let him use his awesome special rpg dice. DriveThru has many options, but Amazing tales fit the bill best. The mechanics are easy to remember and explain. The art in the book is awesome. The tone and advice is very good. You get a handful of settings in the core book, and the Dragoncrown supplement has a full campaign style adventure.

I mostly play Fate or DnD with my friends, but I have used Amazing Tales to spin up a couple of one-shots for my group when we were short too many hands. Great fun. I have even worked it in to my solitaire play a couple of times, and it does well for something more freeform and story focused.

The system is easy, the product is lovely, the supplemental adventures are quality products. If you are at all looking for a narrative focused game (especially for kids) this is worth a look.
