I believe that Six Swarms by Michael Hammes is the first ?monster book? release he has written for Ronin Arts. If this is only the first such book I hope that we will see many more in the future. The product begins with a short introduction that not only allows us to see into the author?s home campaign but also illustrates some of his design perspectives. There are 3 basic parts to this product:
1) An introduction including design perspective and basic properties of the swarm in general. (This is a nice feature as it saves the ready the necessity of looking up swarm characteristics in other sources.)
2) Secondly there is a section for each of the six swarms that details their name, origin, appearance, diet, reproduction, behaviour, combat and a sample encounter entry. The approach provides a wider base of knowledge to use the swarm from when compared to most monster books. Its handy for providing information to players who use their knowledge skills or bardic knowledge to gain information on their opponent. There are also a couple side bars that provide additional information to make the encounters with swarms more memorable. Embedded within the text are comments that help you move these beast more easily into your world.
3) Finally the swarm statistic are presented on pages by themselves for easy printing. The mechanics look solid although I don?t understand one feat that was chosen for one of the intelligent swarms so I?ll just swap it out myself.
Swarms includes:
Name (initial impression)
Filth Maggot Swarm (nice visual)
Corroder Swarm (sure you can avoid a rust monster but what about a flying swarm)
Fire Moth Swarm (it looks so pretty, Oh god I?m on fire)
Lightning Bug Swarm (the true source of ball lightning)
Oozling Swarm (transparent plus acid is always fun; I think he was pulling punches not adding paralysis)
Wizard?s Doom (ouch)
I hope to use all of them soon, but filth maggots will be in my game this week.
