The changes to Season 8 have made AL no longer D&D.

Advancement Checkpoints instead of XP and Checkpoints are awarded per hour of play. You no longer get to keep any treasure you find, instead you get 'Treasure Points'. You no longer get to keep Magic Items you find, now the party 'unlocks' the item for purchase later. You only get gold when you level up.

I won't be purchasing and more WotC products after these rule changes. The admin response to the community in the wake of these changes has been reprehensible and if I were a manager of them I would make it my first priority to get some training for them ASAP.

After playing Adventurer's League consistently from season 3 through 7, accumulating thousands of hours of play with multiple level 20 characters, I've quit. Season 8 is unplayable. The community saw this coming when the first draft of the rules was released. We told the staff to fix it. They didn't. They asked for feedback and said they would listen. Then they released an update saying "You thought we weren't listening" mockingly. Yes, we did. And no, you weren't. So my review is here to inform anyone that might be coming into Adventurer's League without knowing what they are getting into. You're better off playing homebrew. The rules changes bring this game so far from the core experience that Dungeons and Dragons strives for that it's more alienating than Fourth Edition ever was to the player base.

Season 8 content - above and beyond the rules changes (which aren't awesome) has been plagued with errors in formatting, content omission, etc. that have caused confusion, and delays in release which have caused problems in organization.

The treasure and gold changes of this season ruin almost all of the immersion of the game, transforming Dungeons and Dragons into a shockingly bad video game esque treasure hunt. In addition, the admin response to critiscm, and the recklessness with which player concern has been disregarded, has caused myself and almost all of my friends and fellow players to abandon Adventure's League until the rules have been reverted.

The rules changes for Season 8 completely miss the mark. Being a local organizer, I am getting hourly questions from people who don't understand these "simplified rules". The complete removal of gold and party loot from adventures takes AL further away from classic D&D than it has ever been. The attempt to curb power gamers is noble, but the effort overzealous. Loot has been completely removed from the final chapter of SKT, characters have had stats removed with no compensation or opportunity to fix their stats.

I like the new objectives for modules.

The rules of season 8 contain a lot of balance adjustments. Not all of them I like, but AL moves in right direction.

The basic information for playing AL Season 8 is included.

My major concern (and rating consequently) is due to versions 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 all coming out in rapid succession. Nevermind that many people will be arguing which reading is correct, but the concern that 8.3 might be right around the corner with more changes (whichever direction those changes go).

Point in case is the content catalogue which in v8.00 indicated loot rolls as normal (in SKT - a hardcover), however v8.01 removed loot rolls. (this is not an attempt to be contensious or further discussion on this particular point)

It forces people to return to DMsguild daily to see if the information previously released has been modified again.

The scan is good quality.

A large amount of the AL community in my local area have expressed concern for this season, and that concern is not in a good way. Out of everyone I've talked to, whether online or in-person, I have only heard at most 4 people say that they like the new season, and that is out of playing with at least 50-60 people, but that is probably more. Honestly, after having seen the new rules and seeing how they function in an in-game scenario, I have to agree with the majority of those people. There are two major issues that I have seen, but the most problematic one of them is how the season 8 rules effect former hardcovers. For most of the hardcovers that have been released up to the point of this review, the new advancement checkpoint system disturbs player progression in the hardcover, and, more specifically, will advance them through levels far too quickly. Unless the gm tells the players in, let's say, as the most clear example, Lost Mines of Phandelver, that they only gain 1 advancement checkpoint for every 3-4 hours done in game, the players will quickly advance beyond the tier of the adventure. Now, by doing that, that will more likely than not upset the players since they are getting barely anything for being at the table for that amount of time. This, as said, effects other hardcovers, before s8 at least, negatively because of removing the experience system and putting in the advancement checkpoint system, which they are not designed for. The second largest issue is the fact that they removed the ability to gain gold in it's previous way of adventuring and finding it on the way. This is a major issue form the point of role-playing, let alone the fact that many classes are now much harder to play, because of the fact that in many of the modules that are available for AL, the main reason that the adventurers are going on these adventures are: 1) They are being paid by an employer to do a specific thing, go to a dangerous area, etc. or 2) They are going on those adventures to get some kind of loot or gold hoard that is supposed to be in that area, being guarded by a monster, etc. Now, although that doesn't account for EVERY module, for most of the modules I have played and run, either or both of those two are in effect for them. The fact that, in the DM pack it says that all sections in any module or hardcover that explain a monetary award should be ignored (They also highlighted the ignored part with big red ink) shows the problem. The player characters now have no real incentive to go on most of the adventures that are shown in modules because they are just being told to do it with no reason to. It doesn't make sense from a role-play aspect, which, given that they said that they made season 8 like this because they wanted role-play to be more prominent, which defeats the purpose There are more issues than that though, there is also far too many restrictions on item trading, unexplained item bans other than they are problematic even though the community doesn't know why, large gaps in monetary rewards between new and old characters when they get to the same level, and many others that I haven't mentioned I've heard players in my local area say that they are going to quit AL because of these rules, and I don't blame them at this point. If it wasn't for the fact that they could fix this, and I hope that they will, I would leave as well. I've heard about DMs that have been doing AL games for 30+ years saying that they are going to quit because of this. The fact that they say that they are doing this because they want to bring in new players, yet when I tell new players, this was the same day that the new season came into effect, about the new rules, most of them feel like it makes no real sense. In my mind, the best thing that can happen for this season's rules is that it becomes an optional rule, and allow players to choose between the two for their character, not forcing them to have the new rules and removing all of the older rules that have been taken out

The changes made to Season 8 have removed all incentive to play. The treasure changes have destroyed immersion and the changes to gold are crippling and absurdist. SKT has been stripped of 80% of its rewards. Many flavorful items were needlessly removed. All of our local players have unanimously rejected these rules and are abandoning AL play.

Lots of errors:

  • One place you may use Treasure, another place you ignore treasure.
  • One place you unlock items you find, another place you can only unlock certian items. It mentions items like Dragon Scale, but chart above it shows it is not on list to unlock. So which is it? Rise of Tiamat has a lot more items in adventure that what is listed as unlock-able.
  • You run across an NPC who gives you an item to beat monster in next room. You now unlock it, but cannot buy it until after you kill the monster.
  • Its a story item, its not a story item.
  • Item is banned and here is TP compensation, but if you play it now its a story item and after this book its gone. So one group gets TP, another group does not.
  • NPC gives you treasure to pay for bribe needed to complete quest. Treasure is ignored, so now players need to spend TP to complete quest. Or can they use it, one place says yes, another no.
  • Your players enter a room filled with treasure, which they cannot take. Normally this room is trapped and a complex encounter, but now that one cannot take treasure why am I entering this room?

It appears this whole rule system was though from just season 8 books, which are not out, or from theory but not actual play of the current modules.

Suggested fixes:

  • Make all items found unlock-able and don't try to make charts of what is unlock-able and what is not.
  • NPC giving direct payment for quest: Money can be used to pay for quest related expenses and social interactions (bribes) but not supplies and not kept.
  • Banned items are just banned, no TP compensation as I already know several people who went and played a section of a module just so they could get the TP.
  • Don't automatically unlock items at start of season, make them find it.
  • Staff of Magi unlocked for everyone? Seriously? Not problematic? Your whole reason for banning items just went out the window. Have you ever played with a wizard who has a staff of the magi and not have issues?

While this isn't the place for a review a how i agree or disagree with the content. They did provide the content before i needed to run it in an organized manner. +1 for adding Eberron to AL.

I don't like what happened to rewards system with Season 8 introduction. Here is why: 1) Gold by "salary". Really? Really? What an adventurer wants to get salary? This ruins the point of adventure for nearly any character who is not, I guess, Lawful Good or Lawful Neutral (from capital letters). An even than, this hinders them from donating, for example, treasures stolen by Cult of the Dragon to the Temple of Tyr. Moreover, Wizards as a class turn into a beggar. Previously, finding a spellbook or a scroll was a wonderful boon for a wizard. A new opportunity to study! Now it just causes a thought "I can't afford that". 2) Item trade table barriers. Why so much? I think, that "tier-apprpopriateness" limitation is enough. It solves the issue of 5-th level wizard with staff of magi changed for Dawnbringer without further restrictions. I, personally, loved the trade system because it allowed to get any item your character fancies. Now it is not. 3) Treasure checkpoint system. I have so much to say. What is its purpose? To limit people from accumulating to many items and getting too powerful? To prevent situations when players do not take any items till, for example, tier 3, and snatch all the goodies from those who take items normally? Well, these issues are not solved. First of all, characters already overpowered do not get less powerful, becuase items are not wiped out. The system just prevents any new overpowered characters, which, in turn, creates a large gap in items and gold between characters created before season 8 and after. To my mind, this will cause much more frustration than playing with overpowered munchkins. Secondly, items-snatching issue could be solved by merging traditional items-taking and treasure-points system. Those who do not take the item get treasure points to purchase the item later. This will also solve the issue number 4). 4) New system stimulates characters singularity, conformity and homogenousness. Simply, if you have limited trasure points, you can only purchase the items required for "survival", such as wand of magic missiles for wizards, greatsword+1 for GWM fighters and the like. Both as a player and a DM, I have seen so much fun by characters taking and creatively using "non-optimal" items. Most of all in D&D I enjoy roleplaying, but I am afraid that Season 8 system fosters "best-in-slot" MMORPG philosophy. And I hate it. If I wanted play MMORPG, I would not leave my PC and read adventure books, collect dice, paint miniatures, draw grid maps, study Draconic.

In the new system, what is my motivation to play and DM Adventure League instead of home session?

I'm fine with all the changes except for what they did to gold, and that dwarfs anything good that may occur from the other changes. It's so unbelievably bad with overwhelming pushback from the players, yet they ignore everyone and do it anyway. hoping they do away with it for season 9 or do a hot-fix before that...it's just cancer
