Habeus Corpsus is a collection of five MP3s and five NPCs bundled together, from Mindscape Music. The zipped file is rather large, nearly thirty megabytes, and contains five MP3 files, and a single PDF.
The PDF is six pages long, containing a single page of introductory material about how to use the characters contained herein. The next five pages each describe a single NPC, none of which have a name, but rather a title, followed by a quote, a few brief paragraphs of description, and questions for the player (or GM) to ask themselves in order to better flesh out the character. The page backgrounds are grayish, with non-specific imagery barely visible in the background.
The MP3s are all crisp and clear in their presentation. They vary in times from just over four minutes to just over six, with the majority being around four-and-a-half minutes long.
Ultimately, Habeus Corpsus isn?t bad, but seems to bill itself for the wrong genre. While it states that it?s for use with a modern horror game, none of the elements here seem spooky or otherwise horrifying. Rather, NPCs have funny titles (such as ?The Grim Repo?) or descriptions, such as the NPC who, having been brought back from the dead, remembers being in a place that smelled like coffee, but isn?t sure if it was fresh coffee, or burning (analogous to Heaven and Hell). Likewise, the music here seems to be of a techno-trance blend, but not scary by any stretch of the imagination.
Habeus Corpsus isn?t a product that lends itself to horror very easily, but it does a moderately good job of evoking ideas, and the music is unquestionably good; it?s just not anything that?ll make you shiver.
