Modern Players Handbook - Core
Publisher: Infinite Dreamers

I stil have my old D20M books but they are getting old. THis PDF not only makes for a great way to look at it on my kindle or print off a new copy but includes classes from Arcana and Future as well. I even have it on my I-phone. D20M had its share of weaknesses (like all d20) but was quite fun if you just give 3 levels of the Basic classes away and change the silly low BAB for non-magic classes based on Int for mid.

God Play #1 (FREE)
Publisher: DarkBrain

God Play is a good example of what I love and hate about DarkBrain products in general. They come up with excellent ideas. In the case of GodPlay, basically the universe is a computer simulation--not like the matrix but rather as iff all living beings are data. Warren Ellis used something similar in the Planetary series towards the end. But the bad news (for me at least) is that it is still ends up being porn. Not adult like an R-rated movie or even the Heavy Metal comics which may have a brief tasteful sex scene. Nope. Flat out porn. If you are into stuff like hentai then DarkBrain is your kind of publisher. But I ain't into that. If I can't read it in public, I prefer not to read it. So hey, DarkBrain! Please make available R-rated versions of your stuff. You guys have talent, don't waste it on penetration shots please. If this series were more story and less oral sex I would give it a 4 or 5. I give it a 2 because it's a decent story with interuptions of X.

D6 Space

For those old geezers like me that remember the West End Games Star Wars game, that is basically what D6 Space is. Some better mechanics, and of course different background content, but still fun. Only problem is finding those rare non-d20 players to give it a go. Spaceship system is ok but I have yet to find a good vehicle mechanic in any game. Having a cool spaceship is more a bonus for the team and another location for adventures. (as a GM, I tend to have nasty stowaways with acid blood or boarded by space pirates so the PC's have to resort to personal combat.

Labyrinth Lord: Revised Edition (no-art version)

I got LL because it is closer to 1st/2nd ed fantasy than most competitors. Having started playing with 3rd, I was curious what I had missed. Basically I had missed simplicity and fun in the pursuit of killer feat/class combos. LL brings you back to basic. If you are a 3e person like me, the AC seems wierd, although I have played enough Call of Chthulu that percentile based skills were plenty comfortable. The way the saves are laid out eliminates annoying math, although you have to hunt for your attack bonus...just like the 1st ed books I have seen. It also has the inevitable "unplayable" characters that so many older players complained to me about. Namely, a 1st level Rogue is freakin useless! No HP, and the skill that are it's forte fail more than they succeed. But then I have almost never played any D20 based game starting at 1st level, because most 1st levels of any D20 game are somewhat sucky. LL like 3rd ed is best played from 5th to 15th levels, and then it is a lot of simple easy to learn fun. Character creation is 10 to 20 minutes so you can actually play at your first session. Step back into the old school days and enjoy.
