Travels in Arion
Publisher: Arion Games
by Alessandro V. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/22/2020 10:08:06

Travels in Arion is the atlas of the city of Arion seen with the eyes of a foreigner visiting it (and having meals in it...) It is not too in-depth, doesn't tell you too many secrets or details, but it is a nice basis for the Director to build up plenty of city adventures. A very nice resource! However, doesn't have the inspiration and the depth of Blacksand, that is the most similar production by the same editor and set in the same world.

Out of the Pit
Publisher: Arion Games
by Alessandro V. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/22/2020 10:04:01

This book is a straightforward reprint of the original book that was meant for an earlier version of the ruleset. This means that there are the most widely used mosnters, but it also means that you can't use their stats straight away, as they were written for an older version of the ruleset: you will have to consult every time a specific page of the core rulebook (page 123 and following...) and put together the information... not a minor nuisance. I understand that there were some issues about publishing rights to be respected, but... the outcome spoils a bit all the good in this super-classic monster compendium, and after several years this hasn't been rectified yet.

AFF Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2nd Ed
Publisher: Arion Games
by Alessandro V. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/22/2020 09:56:01

The second edition of Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG is a very quickstarting ruleset, that allows literally to start playing in 5-10 minutes, under the guidance of a reasonably experienced Director. If you want it, you can find a lot of variety (for example of different spellcasting styles) and complexity (the simple and straightforward combat system can be made more complex by deploying various refined stances or fighting styles...) but you can just keep it simple and focus on the roleplaying, with simple character generation (or you can use a pre-generated characters, of course) and simple and straightforward action checks. There are also some sections about the world of Titan, its stories, its creatures and its gods, but they are dealt in more detail in other books.

This is the third (so far...) monster compendium of Advanced Fighting Fantasy, covering some less frequently encountered monster, but also the best structured, best written and with best additional information and lore.

The Dark Eye - The Vampire of Havena
Publisher: Ulisses Spiele
by Alessandro V. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/22/2020 09:45:18

I liked a lot how this solo adventure draws from the legend and the lore of the Dark Eye, that always presented a mix of RPG adventures for groups and solo adventures, always with a bit (or more than a bit, if you remember Nedime, die Tochter des Kalifen) of humour. This adventure, in particular, is a great introduction to The Dark Eye and to the cityport of Havena, focussing not only on the adventure of a young rogue (you can use the pre-generated character or use your own rogue...) but also on his thoughts and feeling and on his (limited, but still decent) knowledge of Havena. The story is not a gothic vampire hunt, but it is more about the rogue running around in dark alleys trying to save his skin, until he realizes he was betrayed and decides to get some kind of vengeance. Nice, fun and witty!

The Bridges we Burn - a Numenera Adventure
Publisher: Janek Sielicki
by Alessandro V. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/09/2017 23:06:24

This is by far the best self published Numenera campaign I ever came across and it is better of many official ones. The basic plot is based on classic tropes (kidnap of a noble lady, devious religions, attack of an apparently unbeatable beast to a big city...) and for this reason it is very easy to reskin this campaign or to play only parts of it, but to tell you the truth you will get the very best of it playing it after The Devil's Spine official campaign, that is the ideal prequel.

The author must have studied very in depth Numenera, both its mechanics and its feel, as the adventure adapts perfectly to the game under every point of view and I guess this campaign is a labour of love aimed at being above all a tribute to Monte Cook and his masterpiece.

Without going into the plot detail, what I loved of this campaign is that it "forces" you to use your brain and not to act carelessly, hoping that a kind game master will allow you to do anything without retribution: every stupid, or careless, or blindly violent action will "burn a bridge" behind you and you won't be able to go back anymore to get the best from that specific encounter or situation. That's what I ask to my roleplay games nowadays, as if I wanted to play continuous fights I'd go for a wargame or a boardgame where there is no real background story but just allows me to have fun with fights. In particular I appreciated the presence of an enemy impossible to win with direct attacks, no matter how strong you are. Only using your brain, investigation, diplomacy to find allies, strategy and planning will give you a chance of success (and only then you may start rolling dices).

If you played The Devil's spine and really enjoyed it (as many did), then you need to follow it up with this campaign!

A Breath of Fresh Air
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Alessandro V. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/09/2017 23:03:19

This one-off adventure is easy to port in about any sci-fi world (or even fantasy-sci-fi world), but its feel is perfect for the Ninth World. It is an underground story linked to a lost civilization, a huge, ancient juggernout used for a task not contemplated in its duties and two very peculiar communities of strange creatures fighting each other deep down underground.

What I loved of this adventure is not only how its background was built (the underground creatures are very alien in their organization and behaviour, but still everything makes sense once you understood them: there is no "weird for the sake of just being weird") but even more how understanding the background leads you to a maze of moral choices. This should be what sci-fi is for.

Considering the very low price and how this scenario can be very successfully adapted to about any campaign, I warmly recommend this adventure.

Victorian Villa - Fantasy Floorplans
Publisher: Dreamworlds

Date Added: 02/01/2013 12:22:08

Nothing specially exciting, but a fairly well detailed Victorian villa, with some background information, that allows you to get ready in minutes instead of hours to game master your next scene (mystery murder, hounted house, time travel...) based in a Victorian villa. I'm happy I have this material in my folder as I know can turn up to be very useful in a short time.

Creator Reply:
Matching Henry J. Ford\'s great illustrations to the text was tremendous fun - my favourite is the PC hiding behind his hireling on p.54! Mr Ford certainly sets a high standard to match for the upcoming art crowdfunder for the Journeymanne Rules.
