Extinction

'Extinction' only recently came to my attention I'm currently giving it a good read now, and I'm really impressed.

I love the simple, straightforward chasis of Black Hack, and once again the author 'Kobayshi' makes great use of it for a foundation to rift off, just like he has done with his other games like Fleaux and Black Sword Hack.

The essence of Cold Hard Sci Fi Horror is perfectly captured clearly, and succinctly in just 75 pages, encompassing core mechanics, character archetypes, genre lore and setting detail, as well as a sample scenario and the tools to create your own, including creating Alien threats and the like.

Kobayshi's BH games are almost becoming instant buys for me.

(The only reason these games don't get the fifth star is I reserve that to encompas professional artwork and whatnot in the book, and for a form-fillable character sheet. For an indie publisher however, these books are top shelf)

Highly recommend these titles, this one included!

Fléaux!

Very straight forward, clean system obiviously inspired by The Black Hack, bursting with a baroque dark fantasy flavour. Absolutely wonderful, and easily one of my best rpg purchases in recent times! Hopefully one day a form-fillable character sheet could be available with this purchase, thst would be the icing on the cake. As far as I'm concerned, FLEAUX! deserves top marks, it has captured my imagination more than most trpgs I have recently read. I would love to see some adventures for this game, and perhaps a little more detail for the world setting described.

Definately going to keep an eye on more material by the author Kobayashi (BTW his other work, Black Sword Hack, is really great as well)

I just love FLEAUX!, this indie masterpiece is slick and bursting with creativity. Well worth the purchase !!!

Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells

SHARP SWORDS & SINISTER SPELLS (This comment is for this gameline, and I suggest buying both the Core Book and the Addendum)

This is the best little game I've played for a while. It's got that OSR flavour to the mechanics, yet it's more streamlined and logical than most OSR games. Very much influenced by more recent games, I would sum it up by saying OD&D + D&D 5E +FATE, then trim it all down to bare basics. It's not D&D, yet it sure feels like how we wanted OD&D to run.

I'm a rpg GM who often runs more serious systems, but in recent years have had a bit of fun with D&D 5E and OSR games due to the simplicity of them. In many ways this little unassuming game stands heads and shoulders above all of those.

The whole vibe is very old school pulpy Sword & Sorcery, very much early OD&D before the High Fantasy sanitisation that came after the God Mod hysteria of the mid 1980s. Closer to Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG than anything else, although not quite a much as meatgrinder, and the rules just play very smoothly, none of that DCC intentional clunkiness. This game is perfect for a classic fantasy old school dungeon crawl, very simple, feels like D&D 5E went back to the late 70s & early 80s and said 'Let's do it this way!"

Love the great black and white artwork, really evocative of games like OD&D, Tunnels & Trolls, Fighting Fantasy, Dragon Warriors, etc with a touch of Vance, Moorcock, Howard, and Carter thrown in. The whole vibe is great.

So much info has been thrown into these two books, it's amazingly good value. My only gripe is that I would love to see both books complied (the Core rulebook and the Addendum) in one little digest size hardcover volume. These rules are slim and I recommend buying both the core book (approx 50pages) and the Addendum (approx 100 pages). If this was one hardcover volume, then the product would get 5+ stars from me (if such a thing existed). Really, this is that good.

Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells is favourite new game, and out of a huge collection I would go so far to say that this is probably one of my best purchases so far. I paid only a few dollars for the pdfs, and went back and book the books. Highly recommended!

Thanks so much for the kind review! It made my day! And I am working on compiling SS&SS and its Addendum in a singular hardback book. And working on a setting toolkit for it. The rules will see a slight revision which should put it similarly to my Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells Sci-Fi game.

AFF Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2nd Ed
Publisher: Arion Games
by Cameron M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/10/2017 08:11:29

Simple system, yet plays really well, and covers all the stuff any good fantasy games do. Really feels like an old school fantasy game for all the right reasons!

The Fighting Fantasy gamebooks were my gateway into the world of roleplaying, although by the time of the original publication of these advanced rules (called Fighting Fantasy Dungeoneer back then) I had already moved onto more complex rpgs. It is with renewed eyes that I now look back ot this system, and this current edition of the Advanced Fighting Fantasy rules feels both nostalgic yet fresh at the same time.

No character classes, yet its quick point-build character generation allows you to replicate all the fantasy archetypes, as well as lets you make up your own character concept from scratch.

This system is perhaps the best thing to emerge from the OSR! It really has the flavour of handwaviness, yet none of the restrictions or confounding rules that came with the early editions of many other OSR games such as TSR D&D/AD&D etc.

The world of Titan is pure gonzo Classic Fantasy at its best. It is essientially a High Fantasy setting with lots of old school British Sword & Sorcery elements; all mixed in and underscored with a whimiscal fantasy flavour that would make the likes of Brian Froud, Terry Pratchett, Terry Jones, Tim Burton, or even Lewis Carroll smile.

This game is great for the younger crowd starting to venture into rpgs, but also has enough meat on the bones to attract grognards back for beer & pretzels gaming.

I cant recommend this game highly enough, it simply is a must have rpg for so many reasons, and should not be overlooked by any true fantasy rpg fan!

OpenQuest Basic Edition
Publisher: D101 Games
by Cameron M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/29/2016 02:12:26

This is great for a free product! OpenQuest is an indie retroclone version of RuneQuest which could be described as a trimmed down RQ6/Mythras, yet with the flavour of classic era RQ2 and RQ3. Quick character gen, simple combat rules, reasonable weapon lists etc and Basic Magic. Perfect for an old school session if you want to play a classic fantasy D&D or RQ game, and there's no need to buy the expanded version unless you want more equipment and magic OQ is.a good taster to see if you want to invest in the more complex versions of RQ down the track, although there's certainly no need to do so. There's also a few sword and sorcery scenarios available, so this is perfect as an entry point into simple, classless classic fantasy gaming. The Basic Edition of the core rules is self-contained and free, so you can't get much better than that!
