Modern System: Character Disadvantages

This attractively laid out pdf presents a system of disadvantages for any d20 modern game. The disadvantages give no "up front" benefit, but only provide a benefit when they acutally disadvantage the character. This prevents rules-lawyering players fom fine tuning their character with disadvantages that do little to challenge the character.

LIKED: It's a different take on a disadvantage system and could form a good framework with some tweaks to the rewards system.

Sports a clean and attractive layout, and decent editing.

DISLIKED: These rules use the rating of the disadvantage as a Challenge Rating for determining XP awards for the character when the disad comes into play. At low levels this makes disads extremely attractive. Your character could have recurring flu-like symptoms that could help him make a level. At higher levels the disads become pointless. As the CR does not scale with the character's level. The character would simply stop gaining xp from a CR 2 encounter.

The oft used acronym of DSR is used throughout, and I don't see where it is says what is stands for. I assume Disadvantage Severity Rating...

There are some vaguely superheroic references that seem to be left over from Blood and Vigilance (which is appearantly where this system is from). Also there are references to an Enemy and Antithesis feat. I have no idea where these feats appear and no indication as to their origins is given.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Disappointed
A really interesting take on the disadvantage concept for d20 modern. Seems balanced and interesting. I will probably try it out in my next game.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
