E.N. Treasure Troves - Figurines of Wondrous Power

A very nice collection of new Figurines of Wondrous Power, ranging from standouts as the Blue Baboon and Platinum Pike to the somewhat silly (the Spinel Flamingos), interspersed for reference purposes with the original Figurines of Wondrous Power from the DMG (except for the Stone Horse, which WoTC gave a separate listing for reasons unknown, but most likely poor editing).

There are a few editing mistakes in this text as well: The "Unique Figurines" sidebar on p. 2 is duplicated over p. 2-3 (annoying, but far less annoying than missing text), the "Oak Turtle" on p. 7 is titled "Wooden Turtle" in the illustration on the same page, and the "Onyx Mastiff" also on p. 7 has an amusing example of the Cupertino effect from over-reliance on computer spellchecking--instead of "to bay" and "baying," there's "the bray" and "braying," making the shadow mastiff sound like a malign shadow donkey.

Of more significance, DMs will likely want to get the "Figurines of Wondrous Power (Deluxe)" edition instead. That edition is seven pages longer (17 pages plus one page of licensing vs 10 pages plus one page of licensing), but those extra seven pages have all the stats for the animal forms of all the Figurines of Wondrous Power, saving DMs the trouble of having to reach for the Monster Manual or converting various beasties which are the same as ones from the MM except for a few differences.

The Deluxe edition also fixes the duplicated sidebar, but still has the oak/wooden turtle and the "braying" shadow mastiff. The Stone Horse, however, isn't in either, so you'll still have to reach for the DMG and the MM for stats for that.

The illustrations are nicely done and the page layout is good, though the choice of display face is particularly unreadable in some cases. (I had to go into the text to figure out that the Fulgurite Octopus was in fact a Fulgurite Octopus.)

But all in all, still a very well written and useful collection for gaming.

Very well thought-out, nicely detailed, well-described set of items on an old familiar theme. The presentation is visually attractive, the flavor text is sufficient, and the editing was good.

LIKED: It was a very imaginative extrapolation on old treasures. It also opened up the imagination to ideas for further expansion on the theme, or comparable expansion on other old familiar faces in the treasure trove.

DISLIKED: The only complaint is that it is, of course, very limited in scope. But that's not really a big problem, since it more than delivers what it advertizes... so you're certainly getting at least what you expect when you buy it.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Well done, fairly innovative, and fairly useful. I for one have never been a huge fan of the figurine magic items, but this product adds some much needed depth to an often overlooked magic item type.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
