Race Creation Cookbook
Publisher: LPJ Design
by Lisa H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/03/2005 00:00:00

This pdf has exactly what I was looking for, both as a GM and a publisher.

It takes the race creation rules from the d20 Core Books and makes them much easier to understand and apply. Each ability is categorized and assigned a point value, allowing a GM to quickly compare the relative value of each, and to balance out his or her creations.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
This combination of PDF and graphics files is great resource. It contains four royalty free images (two black and white, two color), and a PDF containing the second chapter of a story.

LIKED: Both the artwork and the story were excellent. As a small publisher, being able to find artwork is always a challenge, and Arcane Monthly ia a great concept.

DISLIKED: All I can say is I wish there was more!

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Monster Geographica: Marsh & Aquatic
Publisher: Expeditious Retreat Press
by Lisa H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/29/2005 00:00:00

This is a compilation of monsters with a theme, this time creatures that are found in marsh or other aquatic settings. The book does that admirably.

LIKED: The layout of the book makes it easy to find monsters both by type and by CR.

DISLIKED: While it was advertised as a compilation from many different sources, it would have been nice to have some additional information added to it, such as plot hooks and the like. Not necessary, of course, but a bit of added value.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
My Thoughts on Writing and Publishing Short PDFs
Publisher: Ronin Arts
by Lisa H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/29/2005 00:00:00

As a resource for publishers, it is priced higher than most other short PDF's, but I feel the extra money is worth it. "My Thoughts" is not a how to document, but exactly what the title is: Phil Reed's thoughts about short pdf's. He discusses how he approaches publishing them, and gives advice on pricing, marketing, and layouts.

As the description of the product says, it is being discontinued as of November 1st, so I would recommend to anyone interested in publishing pdf's, short or long, to pick up a copy of this before it's gone.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Arms and Armor of the Stone Age
Publisher: Bloodstone Press
by Lisa H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/28/2005 00:00:00

I purchased Arms & Armor of the Stone Age to get some ideas for how to model Stone Age-style weapons. It was one of two books recommended to me.

Arms & Armor of the Stone Age comes with two different versions of the pdf: one in landscape format, suitable for viewing on screen; the other, art-free and suitable for printing (being reasonably easy on the ink cartridge).

The screen version is very attractive, with the text appearing on a piece of parchment attached to a wooden board of some kind.

The book starts off immediately with tables listing the weapons covered in the book, separated into weapon types (i.e. Simple, Martial, etc.), and each table is further subdivided into Light Melee Weapons, One Handed Melee Weapons, and so on. After the tables, there are descriptions of all of the weapons, including any special rules. Interspersed through this text is artwork of the weapons or someone using a weapon.

The process is then repeated for armor and shields. After that, there is a brief section about other items and equipment available during the Stone Age, such as clothing and mounts. Finally, there's a brief list of the origins of all the weapons listed in the book.

LIKED: The organization of the book was well done, and the desciptions of the items were very useful. The choice of the parchment color in the screen version was a good one, making it easy on the eyes to read.

DISLIKED: I think it would have been nice to include a bit more history about the weapons and armor, specifically about the materials used. For example, when did the use of bronze become more prevalent than bone or wood? Also, would different materials result in different damage? How much more damage would a bronze club do over that of a wooden club.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
I've been looking for this kind of book for a long time. Trying to design a setting is hard enough, with so many things you need to think about. This book serves as a great reminder list.

LIKED: The information in FFaS is useful for any kind of genre. Sections 6 and 7 are perhaps the best parts.

DISLIKED: I'd have like to have seen a bit more about why certain transitions from one technology to another happened, but I don't think that's much of a drawback to this book.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Beast Builder: A Digital Companion

Like a lot of other people, I'd rather spend my time on creative stuff rather than number crunching or character creation. I love the book A Magical Society: Beast Builder by Expeditious Retreat Press, and thought the generator was a good idea.

LIKED: It allows the user to come up with monsters rather quickly, and creates usable stat blocks.

DISLIKED: I'd have liked to see more options available for selection, such as allowing the user to define the size of the creature, or whether or not they have extraordinary, spell-like, or supernatural abilities.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
This is yet another product from Expeditious Retreat Press I am glad I bought. The information in the book is very well written, and presented in an easy to use and understand manner.

LIKED: I really appreciated the information about how the various items in the stat block can affect the CR of a creature.

DISLIKED: It would have been nice, in the section about the different types and subtypes, if there were examples of creatures for that type. For example, listing kobolds under the Reptilian subtype. When brainstorming new creatures, having those examples could spark an idea.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
