Vault 5e: A Life Well Lived

This is a really solid addition to any 5e D&D game. There's something here for everyone, from an alternative character-generation system, to what goes on during a Long Rest or Downtime. I found that even just skimming the book gave me a wealth of ideas.

I don't know that I need this with my trusted game group, but:

A) I'm glad it exists

B) I will keep it in mind when I design and run scenarios at Gen Con

There are going to be haters of this product. You can probably see their reviews right now. Two things you should know about those people:

A) They should never be allowed near children

B) They should be prevented from running games at Cons

This isn't strictly NECESSARY for most people. But it's a useful reference. And it's a shame that the people who most need to read it won't.

Pigsmoke: A Roleplaying Game of Sorcerous Academia
Publisher: Certain Death

I just finished my PhD, and I was worried this game was going to hit a little too close to home. Not the case! Running the game, I found it incredibly cathartic to sic a demonic Internal Review Board (IRB) on the players' professors, forcing them to publish or perish, and making fun of their meager salaries as adjunct faculty.

My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is that a lot of the special rules work specifically on NPCs, and my players kept trying to pull them on each other. There wasn't a lot of guidance there, although it was easy enough to improvise.

In our first game, one character summoned dead students to fill out another professor's class that was in danger of being canceled due to low enrollment, and the Paraveterinary Department building pulled itself out of its foundations and tried to breed with the Department of Life and Death building (which was completely filled with a multi-limbed amoeba that kept absorbing undergraduates and trying to claim lead author status on everyone else's academic papers).

Brillaint game. I'm glad this sort of thing exists (as much as I'm glad I have friends that enjoyed playing it with me).

Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate

I was looking for something that really felt like mythic and legendary China, but done as more of a fantasy setting than a historical one. Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate scratched that itch, but also gave me even more than I asked for.

I was primarily looking for setting material, but the system looks like fun, and certainly has all the wuxia wire-fu martial arts hijinx I was hoping to include in the stories I wanted to play out with my group. Now I'm not sure if I should continue with the system I had in mind or just use the one included in the game.
