Simple and easy to run! The shock and laughter from my players when they finally figured out who they were fighting was amazing.

I ran this one-shot as my debut as a DM, and we had a blast! The plot line is straightforward but open enough to allow for plenty of adlibbing! It also happened that several of my players regularly reference the source inspiration, so when the reveal finally happened, they loved it. Great job!

This is the first adventure I've run as a first-time DM and my friends absolutely loved it. Perfect for 2 3-level players (I've run this thrice for such parties) and the tension still holds for magic users. The overall directions and content provided to move the story forward was easy to follow and there weren't too many times when I wasn't sure what to do.

Some things that I wasn't exactly sure what to handle (maybe this is because I am new to DMing):

  • What happens when the characters don't try to run from Shilo? Does he still run past them or was a battle supposed to ensue? To follow the song, I had him run past them without doing anything, but it seemed a bit weird.
  • What happens when Shilo is completely mutilated when downed the first time, but his head isn't chopped off? I had a party that had thrown him into the fire (not the head), chopped off his limbs, and probably broken his neck - but since his head wasn't chopped off, I had him come back to life. Does Shia Surprise still apply there?
  • Does the shotgun attack count as one of the multiattacks (i.e. can follow up with bite/melee attack) or as an alternative to multiattack?

I'll let one of my PC's explain his reaction through what he posted on Facebook:

"You’re doing a one shot D&D scenario, thinking it’s part of the Strahd campaign and your DM lays out the scene:

You’re in a small town and the populace is victimized. Something has been killing everyone. There’s blood everywhere.

You head out into the woods and it’s really dark. Then the beast appears about 30 feet back. Bathed in the moonlight, brandishing a knife, he gets on all fours and lunges at you. Fighting him is useless. He knocks out everyone in one hit. And every time he hits... he recovers all damage and continues to fight.

You finally escape and you see a cottage in the woods... but your party member’s panther gets caught in a bear trap! But you get out and you see the beast sharpening an axe. But you have to get back to town to heal. You get there and there’s BLOOD EVERYWHERE.

You talk to a couple survivors, including children. You step back outside and then the bastard jumps off the roof and attacks the cleric! He uses Death in his Eyes on the panther... but the panther’s natural 20 reflects it back in its own eyes... paralyzing him. The cleric finally shoots him with magic and he explodes like a dropped bowl of chili! The town slowly claps as you’ve defeated the boss of the one shot.

Then your DM reveals to you who you were facing.....Shia LaBeouf"

This is such a fun one shot module! I've run this so many times and it's always a hit. You definitely have to play the video at the end of the session. It also makes for a good jumping off point for new campaign or as a fun side quest in a currently on-going one.

This was my first DMing experience and I appreciate the straight forwardness of how to present the adventure to my table full of new players. The NPCs were fleshed out enough for the improv of extra questions to be relatively easy. My group ended up trying to sneak into the forest in day time to stake out the "beast" but it was fun to make it elusive to their tricks and cunning. I had an excellent time springing the SHILO SURPRISE, and that's when several at the table knew EXACTLY what the reference was. Well designed for 3rd level newbies trying out D&D for the first time. As a first time DM, I can speak to it personally being an intuitive to follow guide for a 3 hour adventure with newer players alike. Highly recommended, thanks for the fun adventure!

Absolutely brilliant. Suspense all the way through, with my party being blindsided with the reveal. The citizens of the village have good connection to each other and the story, with a lot of opportunities for expanded RP. Heading into the forest was a non-stop emotional roller coaster for the party. Fun to prepare and fun to play.

I ran this when half my group was away for the week, one of them I knew had seen the original video while the others I did not know. Thankfully (since he picked up quickly on the idea of the campaign) he did not mention what was really happening. Everything felt right when going through the town, making things seem more ominous than they were. At the end of the campaign my friend was laughing hysterically while the rest of the group looked on confused. After sending them the video everything fell into place.

I really enjoyed playing this campaign, as did the rest of my group, the thought that there was a creature hunting and murdering the people in this town really went down well and they were willing to track down the culprit. At the end of it everyone was happy and had enjoyed the session.

Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun couple of hours
