Ultramodern5 (5th Edition)
Publisher: Dias Ex Machina Games

Ultramodern5 is a toolkit. It is not complete by no means. So why five stars? Because it does what it does so well. it allows You to play and run almost any type of modern or future game. It is missing rules for supers cyberpunk and starships. However we are assured they will appear in an expansion at a later date. The rules blend seamlessly with the 5th edition ruleset and there are some great additions in there. Everything seems well balanced. This product replaces d20 modern with a slicker faster ruleset. Go buy it! Edit: I have been comparing this heavily with d20 modern /future to see how it holds up against some of the older classes. With neurospasta and apex adding to the rules I really cannot fault this product. It is every bit as versatile as 5e core books which it should be. Bear in mind there is no setting for these rules nor for apex. But there is for neurospasta. Unless you count amethyst which does not require this book anyway. This book easily replaces the d20 modern ruleset. So those old darkmatter books may get another airing yet.

I was of two minds on this one. You see I don't really do super powers rpgs. But having loved Ultramodern 5 I thought let's see what it has to offer and I'm really glad I did. There are loads of options here when you look beyond the supers idea. You could easily create a mutant or alien species with weird abilities. It really adds to Ultramodern 5 in terms of what else can you create with the toolbox .which is what it boils down to .more tools to play with .more creations to build world's with . No regrets in purchasing this one. Now we just need to hope for those space opera tools..... World building. Ship construction etc. Then the toolbox will be complete. Thanks Chris Dias. Another corker.

Ive been waiting on my harbound copy of this before i took to reviewing this product, And what a big book it is. I picked it up having never heard of it but drivethru recommended ultramodern5 and upon looking at that i thought wow this needs a couple of settings to go with it. This is one of those settings. Post apocalypse of sorts where magic has invaded our world and started bringing the world around us back to nature. Full of fae, dragons and all manner of typical and unusual fantasy beasts. So what does man do? He walls off his cities and holds back the tide of magic by developing his technology. This isnt strictly tech vs magic either.. magic comes with a dark side if you will, Corrupting the minds of Light sided fae and techans. Also some of the corrupted fae have defected, Unhappy with things the way they are. This gives you the opportunity to create unlikely and very shaky alliances within your party which in turn creates a very fun session all by itself just the characters relationships alone create an amazing game. There is alot stacked up in here, The techan classes are astounding. I loved the medic ability to pass on any damage done to himself while helping a team mate onto another character, Essentially using your team as meatshields. That is just one example. The classes are all well balanced and work so well together. This is a team game where you will be well rewarded by working together. I for one look forward to future products in this line. Oh and also, you dont need ultramodern5 to run this setting.

USR (Unbelievably Simple Role-playing)

OK. What can I say other than it does what it says on the tin. However. As a seasoned roleplayer I find it too simple. The perfect system for me was the fantastic movie version of the uni system as used for army of darkness by Eden studios. Because I feel you need more crunch to help define your character and this is what usr is missing. However I wouldn't mind seeing a younger player using them. So in a nutshell. One for the juniors to cut their teeth.

Chthonian Stars Core Setting

I love this product. Even over the void. It feels more complete. It has more creatures than the void plus as it's traveller there is already plenty of support out as in central supply catalogue etc. I prefer to use 2300ad tools for frontier living as they are more hard scifi equipment. I know there is no support for chthonian stars however the void system is d6 while traveller is 2d6 so converting over creatures is a doddle despite the change in attribute names. Hopefully the world books will be just as easily converted. Beautiful product.
