I picked this up to give me some ideas on running pulp-content scenarios in my Call of Cthulhu campaign. I wan not disappointed. This is an excellent summation with enough information to permit the GM to run pulp style adventures for just about any system, and the scenario generator, though a bit mechanistic, does allow the GM to create a basic outline which he can then flesh out with as many plot twists and turns as he has time to develop.

The essay on why Pulp is not a "genre," while interesting, used space that could have been better spent elsewhere. Frankly I don't care as much whether my label usage is "correct" as I do about the nuts and bolts of running an adventure. Perhaps replacing this with more information on the Cliffhanger style of play or a more in depth discussion of how to create fleshed out scenarios using the scenario generator (such as clue placement, etc, etc) might have been a better use of the time and space.

As usual, DriveThru did a bang-up job reproducing the document and I had no problems with legibility or bleed through or anything like that. I'll give this one a good, solid "4."

This is, by far, the best GM resource for pulp role playing. The information on the times and styles presented in pulp adventures is thoroughly covered. The random adventure generator is excellent. It's more than just an adventure seed generator, but helps generate each individual act. I've used the adventure generator to create adventures for our group's home brew RPG rules and also for Pulp-Fu. You can even use the adventure generator to create adventures on the fly. If this product were just the adventure generator, it would be well worth it, but with all of the material on the genres and styles covered by the pulps, plus all of the useful hints on actually GMing a pulp RPG, this one is a no-brainer: if you're a pulp GM, buy Thrilling Tales: Gamemaster's Guide to Pulp Adventure.

First off, I really like what the book has to say. A great rundown of the different elements that go into the Pulp setting. Will help a GM interested in running any kind of Pulp campaign, no matter the gaming system. There isn't much of anything in here that is "game system" specific. Most of it deals with tips, not rules.

LIKED: The adventure generator is a useful tool for a GM. Great product. I will be getting the starter kit in the future to give muyself a nice jump into the campaign setting.

DISLIKED: This isn't so much a dislike. I have also purchased the Forbidden Kingdoms bundle recently and was amused to see that a bunch of the artwork is the same as appearing in the Forbidden Kingdoms books.

Alot of others have complained that the Thrilling Tales products dont come with a printer friendly fromat. I share this to some extent, but appreciate the page layout, if I had it printed out professionally. I want to complain the other direction. The products don't have a screen friendly version, like some PDFs that I own. If at some time this product gets updated with a printer friendly copy, I hope the rearrange the normal one for better on screen reading. Dont like having to scroll up & down to read it all.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Good, no nonsense guide to running pulp adventures. The real meat of this product is the scenario generator material. Most of the other detail is fairly cursory but solid enough. All-in-all a solid overview of the genre. For more detail you will need something like Hero Games' Pulp Hero product.

LIKED: The scenario generator.

DISLIKED: Very printer unfriendly layout.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Anyone who is looking to start their own Pulp era setting or game using the D20 Modern ruleset, this is a good place to start. It is another solid product by the folks at Adamant.

LIKED: Information given will help you understand how to run this type of setting.

DISLIKED: Wish there were some feats included in this PDF.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
This is a terrific product marred almost catastrophically by its un-optimized state. When a perfectly average computer takes over three minutes to process and print one page, and there is no printer-friendly version, the utility of even the greatest of products is severely hampered. Even copy-and-paste is hampered because of control codes that pop up here and there. This publisher should take note of how other publishers lay out and compress their PDFs in order to make the Thrilling Tales line just as good. On the bright side, there are bookmarks and they're well-used.

This is particularly unfortunate because the rest of this product is top-notch. The random pulp adventure generator, along with the structure of a pulp story, is worth far more than the price of admission. That kind of thing has long gone un-addressed. Pulp adventure stories are tremendously formulaic, yet pulp RPGs have completely ignored the benefits of genre formula.

Some good mook rules are included, as well as a really insightful overview of the pulp genres generally not included in RPGing. (Pulp fantasy such as D&D is of course the most popular sort of gaming, so it's not covered here.)

LIKED: Incredibly great material. Good choice of topics, and excellent detail on those topics. The adventure generator is brilliant.

DISLIKED: Technical faults mar this otherwise awesome product's usefulness.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
The spirit of the Pulp Era is alive and well with THRILLING TALES! I am not a 'd20' fan, but I purchased this for other Pulp rules.

LIKED: I especially love the section on designing plots and adventures! This can be used for any Pulp-flavored game system.

DISLIKED: N/A. I want MORE!

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
