SpirosBlaak 3.5
Publisher: Misfit Studios
by Geoff K. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/11/2006 00:00:00

Over the past few months, I've not had the time to play any D&D, but I've read a handful of campaign settings for fun. SpirosBlaak definitely stood out as the most original from among them. I've always prefered sword-and-sorcery fantasy and generally don't like the addition of guns. In this setting, the addition of "black powder" weapons really works. It just feels right. I love the setting's emphasis on lycanthropes and applaud the authors' synthetic ties-ins with previously published materials, especially their advice on how to use Freeport stuff (though, its just my silly affinity for pirates rather than this being a better tie-in than the many others they make). Also, the campaign background story is well detailed and original. My only complaints are that the setting includes only one hard-to-read map and no starter adventure.

LIKED: I liked alot of things about this creative, original, synthetic work.

DISLIKED: I only disliked a couple things about it -- the map and the lack of a starter adventure.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Monster Geographica: Underground
Publisher: Expeditious Retreat Press
by Geoff K. [Verified Purchaser]

ERP has done a great job of compiling and updating a ton (ca 200) of underground monsters, and have made it available for an amazing price. I commend them for simplifying an adventure writer's life. The book is meticulously bookmarked alphabetically and by type and CR. The handful of Flora and Fauna entries add a nice touch; I found the stonemites an interesting concept. This book, combined with another purchase I recently made (Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary), give me enough new creature possibilities to keep me busy for a long time!

But, I like the content so much, I'd pay for an illustrated version.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Advanced Bestiary (d20 3.5)
Publisher: Green Ronin Publishing

Wow!

I bought this book without doing any pre-purchase research because I trust Green Ronin's quality, and will buy just about anything they publish. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was not a single new monster in the book.

Not one!

The entire book is filled with creature templates. So, what Advanced Bestiary provides are possibilities -- ways of making existing monsters more powerful in many cases and less powerful in others. But, in all cases, chances are your run-of-the-dungeon monsters will become more interesting.

Thanks for such a great adventure-writing resource.

Heroes of High Favor: DWARVES
Publisher: Bad Axe Games
by Geoff K. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/06/2005 00:00:00

These Heroes of High Favor (HoHF) books from Bad Axe Games are one of the best series of d20 books I've read -- each book is written with self-styled "grit" and formed around a quite elegant idea; take a race and build around its favored class. Then provide tons of cool source material and prestige classes that represent the various combinations you could get to from that point. I've got the whole set of these books, but jumped on the Bad Axe bandwagon after Dwarves went out of print. So, I'm super pumped that they re-released it as a PDF.

The book was written for the 3E edition of D&D, you should be able to easily use this stuff in your v3.5 campaign. I know I will.

LIKED: I don't think you'll find a better book for this price! Heck, I would've paid $10 for it.

DISLIKED: This applies to the whole series of HoHF, not just Dwarves...this is possibly the most near-perfect (in my mind) series of books for d20 that I've read.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
