The Book of Many Things

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I got this. Previous work had led me to expect tight thematic packages that were very well developed and focused. Looking at the solicitaiton this was clearly kind of something more like a cornucopia or shotgun blast of random fun pieces. Usually such products are fields of debris with a few quality bits to really lock on to. The wall of content I got after the download was nearly intimidating, but I quickly realized that each piece was gathered into nice consumable sections and it is rapidly become one of my favorite things to browse. And it keeps getting updated through the course of the year! This collection simply floored me on release and then continued to get more and more valuable. The sheer tidal wave of content is amazing. Piles of interesting racial options, a dozen new classes. Dollar for dollar you can't find a value in mechanical crunch that touches this product. Here are a few favorites:

  • Accelerist - One of the coolest speedster-themed classes I have ever seen for Pathfinder. It has great mechanics that are robust without being bogged down in complexity and covers the concept 4 ways in its base design before you even get to the archetypes.
  • Battle Augur - I loved Blue Magic in the Final Fantasy series and this is another battle/monster mimic class that really delivers on presentation of that theme. Presented in a concise manner that covers a large variety of abilities it is hard to believe how much it packs into 3 pages of text.
  • Darkseeker - Divine servants of Shadow that combine magic with stealth and sneak-attacks to round out any campaign where the power of the Shadow Plane is felt.
  • Dalits - Playable otyugh-kin. drops mic
  • Mushroom Leshys - Leshys are one of the most adorable monsters in the game and I have a soft spot for another playable option for unique family-friendly game experiences.
  • Archetypes for old standbys like Fighter to the newest Shifter in the Pathfinder core are sure to open up options you never thought you'd see.

180 pages of delicious crunch makes this a steal at the price.

Letters from the Flaming Crab: World Tree
Publisher: Flaming Crab Games
by Christen S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/07/2017 08:40:29

I have loved the Advanced Archetype stuff from Flaming Crab for a good long while. But I when looking at the “Letters from…” series, like many of you, had mostly thought "whimsical" when considering it. Nothing wrong with whimsy I say but not always to the quick with my pocketbook for it. But then I noticed that one of those products (this one) was labeled "World Tree" and being a longtime fan of the myth of Yggdrasil and the planar essence it adds to adventures I was immediately sold.

Again here I made a second mistake... because the product was neither whimsical (though there is a touch of whimsy) nor specifically about Yggdrasil. I am rarely so happy to be so wrong. It is a new (if familiar) myth, about a very SIMILAR tree but with its own origins. The material could serve as Yggdrasil, an offshoot or its analog. But also stands on its own.

And the crunch. I was not expecting that. So much. A religion about the dryad goddess of the tree with full Obedience rules (Like PFCS Inner Sea faiths). A fully developed PC race (with ARG buyout) having its own alternate racials, equipment, favored class bonuses (including classes from Advanced Class Guide and Occult Adventures and racial archetypes. Half a dozen monsters ranging from CR 2 to 24. Random encounters by the relative height the party is at in the tree, both relevant and clever.

All of that and still presented in a strong narrative frame with a clear layout, advice for adaptation, and a useable settlement with story elements for adventure. Even a great sidebar on adapting the material to other origins. Decidedly cohesive and well-thought. I applaud the team for delivering something so ubiquitously good and despise them a little bit because now I have to reconsider buying the whole damn series.

(It even has RATTATOSKIR so it pretty much won right there.)

Unfettered Dreams: Malefex
Publisher: Dreamscarred Press
by Christen S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/03/2017 23:51:45

Unfettered Dreams: Malefex is (deliberately or not) another entry into the line-up of 3pp heir-apparents to the "hole" left by the 3.5 class, the Hexblade. Like it's predecessor it relies on curses of misfortune to weaken and vex foes. Other classes (malefactor from TPK, luckbringer (with the jinx archetype), and more) tried to scratch this itch with some success. Unlike the previous version of 3.5 and these others, malefex really delivers on the misfortune. The class revolves around swift action "malefactions" that flow in a similar manner to 3.5's warlock class but instead open a cornucopia of inflictions, thefts and other karmic alterations that make the spellcasting loss from hexblade (if that was the inspiration) forgettable. Buff spells fail, energy is stolen and dozen's of diverse playstyles are supported. The classes "wrack" ability assure a level of damage that is admirable against cursed foes who receive penalties to resist said abilities when flanked making the malefex have high party synergy with rogue. Spreaking of party synergy, the ability to spread and benefit from [curse] descriptors provides limitless interactions with the Path of War Expanded's curse using classes and martial manuevers leaning toward a party "wedge" or full-concept with common mechanic. Fifth wheel players (those who favor support or debuff classes outside the classic roles) have long sought a perfect anti-bard analog in this alley. The only other contender who matches malefex in my experience is its 3pp cousin malefactor (TPK Games) but when it comes to comparing the two, the malefex pulls ahead in precision ability usage (bersus malefactors broad ally-inclusive auras) and general party-friendliness. If you want to bring woe and disaster to all around you, you may want the other class but if you want a deliberate and delicious dealer of doom THIS IS YOUR CLASS.

Adepts of the Inward Eye
Publisher: Total Party Kill Games
by Christen S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/23/2017 19:13:34

Very few 3rd party publishers take the time to consider other 3rd Party publishers work let alone to design deliberate support. This book does and it does it exceptionally well. Multiclass combinations that simply weren't playable become viable and unique options. Games that wish to acknowledge psionic powers (Dreamscarred Press) and psychic magic (Occult Adventures) gain intriguing ways to blend both. While casual inspection might lead you to believe this product is only for psionic and other mental origin characters it has feat support and prestige classes for martial characters, spellcasters and many other character concepts. This one is a must for players who like multiclass characters and permissive GMs.

Classes of NeoExodus: Protean Scribe (PFRPG)
Publisher: LPJ Design

This class is filled with amazing creative potential! The protean scribe's concept is so strong and execution so fun it literally kept me up all night consider all the ways to play the class. And best of all, there is so little required "locked in" class features that you can change your play style with as little as a full-round action. Living stories! Magical phrase attacks! Day long augmenting embelishments! If you CAN'T decide between being a buffer, a pet master, a ranged attack specialist or a debuffer... DON'T. Just play this class and switch up your style with your stylus when ever want!

Ultimate Occult
Publisher: Rogue Genius Games
by A customer [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/30/2016 00:01:43

This project set out to satisfy a narrow mission, to deliver a psychic magic [Occult Adventures] compatible group of classes in the tradition of the ancestral psionics system. With a combination of unique and streamline mechanics, implementing the undercasting rules and psychic magic pools, the classes manage to mirror the flexibility of the old system while defending the home range of slot based psychic casters. While a lot of ground may be retread in the re-envisioning of both psion and psychic warrior, surprising new ground like mentalist and a delicious array of spells provide plenty of surprises. If your GM hesistates to embrace the full psionic point based fluidity of Dreamscarred's Pathfinder compatible versions, then this may be the product your mind needs.

[PFRPG] Player's Options: Timebender
Publisher: Purple Duck Games
by Christen S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/02/2013 00:00:00

Players Option: Timebender presents a streamlined class with a tight array of combat related temporal effects. A primary melee combatant, its powers allow it to stagger its attacks throughout the round to gain increased versatility and accuracy. While this diminishes the comparable “Burst DPS” full attack actions against those of barbarians and power-attack themed fighters, it makes up for these dispersed amounts of damage by allowing for a series of standard actions to occur throughout the round. The strategic options and power to course-correct are dizzyingly cool. While enabling amazing movement options like selective time that allows the timebender to walk on water and even air, these “Temporal Flurry” actions bar spellcasting and most exploitable sequences my group could throw at them.

The class showcases “Time Control Tricks” and a few other time-themed core abilities to fill it out. While several of these abilities lean toward the strong end of balance (Such as the inflicted Re-Rolls of Forced Repetition or the temporary banishment of Shove Forward), a requisite of a high INT score places their usability in point buy games at a limited level. A player will likely have to focus on a damage dealer role or a controller role to excel at either but GMs should probably generally expect a balanced versatility more common to monks and rangers from this class.

A player missing some of the feel of 3.5’s Tome of Battle or one transitioning from 4e to Pathfinder will find this class a good fit with simple resource management mechanics and reusability. On the other hand, GMs running a time themed campaign will find it rounds out the ranks nicely. Other time magic products (Like Time Thief and Time Warden from RGG/SGG) have left the melee niche relatively untouched and the timebender blinks into that place nicely allowing for balanced parties of temporal reavers to vex your PCs.

A strong offering but its straight-forward mechanics prevent it from becoming too powerful, Players Options: Timebender is a 5-star addition for a GM already planning on a temporal magic element in their campaign.
