A Dozen Effects of Lingering Spell Energy
Publisher: Ronin Arts
by Gregory H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/08/2005 00:00:00

This one was a shade disappointing, which is too bad, because I absolutely love the series. I read the blurb about Lingering Spell Energy, and my imagination ran wild with ideas... but the supplement itself didn't really do much to feed into those thoughts. It more or less plugged in some game mechanics for dealing with the phenomenon. Which is OK, but it wasn't as cool as I had hoped.

LIKED: As always, these guys do superior editing, presentation, and have a lot of quality packed into a nice space.

DISLIKED: For such an original subject, the treatment of it felt a bit mundane.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Another fantastic addition to the series. These are truly cool and original, and can make a formidable villain or NPC look downright wicked. Secret Orders: Keepers Of The Common Purity

And...

This was a fairly decent concept. The group is kind of like a scattered and dissociate fantasy version of the KKK. It has decent information on their formation and influences, with no details of the kind that would prevent them from being dropped into any campaign world. Any GM who wishes to use this will have a great deal of detailing to do, as it only presents generalities, not specifics.

Overall, it was about what I would have expected for a dollar.

LIKED: More concrete than the first Secret Orders book. This was the seed of a usable organization that has purpose and direction.

DISLIKED: It seemed to cut off rather abruptly. I was reading along, expecting it to keep on going into the next section of information, when suddenly I was simply at the end of the document. It was as if the author simply stopped writing in mid-document and ran it off to print it... which made it feal like half of a product.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Poisoncraft: The Dark Art
Publisher: Blue Devil Games
by Gregory H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/06/2005 00:00:00

This is a very comprehensive supplement. I was thrilled to see such a complete covering of this intriguing subject. From spells to professions to creatures to adventure hooks to feats to poisons to game-rules-mechanics... it's all here. Even special items revolving around the creation and use of poisons are included.

This is the kind of longer, encompasing book that you could very well find bound and placed on a shelf at your local RPG store.

LIKED: I gleaned an enormous wealth of ideas and usable material from this PDF. Easily worth the price and then some. And that's coming from someone who doesn't even use a D20 system (most of the best stuff is D20, so I buy and adapt it). It would be worth even more to an AD&D player, who could make use of 100% of the material.

DISLIKED: Honestly, I found very little to be critical about on this one.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Kressmer's Bizarre Grimoire: Seven Strange Spells
Publisher: Silverthorne Games
by Gregory H. [Verified Purchaser]

I always look forward to the Kressmer installments.

These spells, while not typically major in scope or power, are just too flavorful to pass up. Everything about them screams "Gnome."

I get the feeling that Kressmer would be a really entertaining guy to hang out with...and really, really annoying if he didn't like you.

Truth be told, I think this particular set of freebies is often cooler than some of the things I've spent money on. The author really does a fine job on the presentation.

LIKED: It's fun, it's functional, it's free... what's not to like? Heck, the guy even edits well and has a snappy looking cover page!

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Let me begin by saying this: Never in a million years would I have thought to buy this product without being prompted.

The ridiculous title when I saw the product listing led me to the assumption that the book was some kind of farce, parody, or joke, and I never gave it a second glance.

But at one point, I bought another product by the company, and they sent me a nice coupon... so I figured I could at least read the description...

Anyway, as far as the product itself, it really is very well done. It's a solid set of nicely designed artifacts of varying degrees of power that are fairly game-ready, and in most cases given some very nice historical background and storyline information.

LIKED: The contents were actually quite good, if you're looking for a treasure supplement. There were some very original ideas in here, and all of the items were very fleshed-out.

DISLIKED: There were a number of editing problems... usually the kinds of grammatical glitches and word transpositions that a spellchecker won't see. But honestly, what I disliked the most was the title. It makes it look like the sourcebook to some B-horror game, which means it targets an audience that's not at all connected with the people who would be most likely to want what's in it.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Again, I worry that the titles in this series may deter from the sales of what are really pretty fine products. This (along with Ducks of Ultimate Doom) was one of those things that I skipped over in a product listing because it looked like a joke... then looked at in detail when they attached a coupon upon purchase of another product.

I'm glad that I did, because the magical items in here are quite creative and their backgrounds make for great storylines, quests, and idea-builders. It really is a quality treasure supplement for a GM's library... and no, the items inside are not goofy and tongue-in-cheek. They are very legitimate and inventive things, in this case often having some sort of necromantic reference (either pro- or anti-).

LIKED: As with all products I've purchased from these guys, my favorite part is not the items themselves, but the history and 'where to find it' sections on each. These often contain good info for designing your own quests, locales, world histories, or even dungeons.

DISLIKED: Just the title really.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
You are correct. The sales of this product has been far less than expected, and that is solely due to the title. However, reviews have been fantastic, and customers have all loved it so far. Thanks for the comments!

Complete Fantasy Treasure Map Bundle #1 Deluxe Edition
Publisher: Hart-Felt Productions
by Gregory H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/03/2005 00:00:00

Honestly, with words like "Bundle" and "Deluxe Edition" in the title, I was expecting a lot more.

Perhaps it's not fair to expect too much from a $1.50 supplement, but I really didn't find much useful here. The whole thing pretty much added up to an ad for Campaign Cartographer 2 (which looks nice, if you're in the market for a mapping program). The CC2 versions may be fairly usable if that's what you're looking for, but really what I was excited by when I saw the product was the prospect of hand-drawn-looking treasure maps. That's where I was very let-down.

There was very little substance on the maps at all (one was literally just 4 items... like a tree, an "X", etc. with arrows going from one to another). I understand that someone sketching out a map to hidden treasure so they can find it again may not have a ton of time, or be a professional cartogropher, but I doubt a map that was that minimalized would be useful even to the person who drew it... much less a player/adventurer who found it.

I guess I was just let down by the lack of detail or artistry... even in the rudimentary sense... on the maps. It didn't look like anything that I couldn't have slapped together in 15 minutes or less (keeping in mind that I am ONLY referring to the hand-drawn maps here).

LIKED: CC2 looks fairly nice. It's very possible that this product could look more appealing to someone who has (or is in the market for) that program, or who wants some computer maps and has a way to fit them into their game world.

DISLIKED: I just didn't get much out of it. Maybe it was my fault for expecting something that wasn't the focus of the project... I don't know. But I wouldn't recommend buying this with the drawn-maps in mind.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
A Dozen Unusual Articles of Clothing

As is always the case in this series, the presentation is sharp and clean, the editing is well-done, and the content contains good depth and quality. Each item has substantial background material, and will do well to spice up a generic treasure stash under the right circumstances.

This particular edition of the "A Dozen" series was not my favorite... the items didn't grab me quite as well, or get my creativity going in terms of my own creations much. But that may have more to do with my lack of attachment to the subject of fashion than the actual content.

Whatever the case, it's a quality product.

LIKED: This whole series just comes accross as very professional. There is a lot of substance and quality in a concise space. There is no sub-par things thrown in to these supplements just to fill out the numbers... you usually get the feeling that they probably had more than 12 good ideas, and just narrowed it down. I for one find that far preferable to supplements that put in junk filler just to reach some large promised number.

DISLIKED: I wasn't as grabbed by the items in this one. They were, in some cases, just a bit too subtle for me. But even if you buy this as your first 'A Dozen' title, and feel the same way, don't let it dissuade you from trying another one. This is the only entry from the series that I've tried so far that didn't enthrall me.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Another outstanding edition to the series. These guys seem to have so many creative ideas, that it invokes wierd images of a man who has to keep doing these things lest his head actually physically explode.

At any rate, this turned out to be one of my favorites of the 'A Dozen' series that I've purchased to date (I believe I've picked up 7-8 of them). These are some wonderfully creative and... well... wicked items that will not only add a troubles to the characters lives, but can really add to the feeling of evil that surrounds a cool villain. Plus the background material on each item is enough for a DM with an active imagination to spawn all sorts of histories, adventures, or even campaigns.

LIKED: I would have bought this for the Banner of Cheildurn and Saint Olaeb's Puzzle Box alone... the other 10 'treasures' were just one big bonus after another.

DISLIKED: There really wasn't anything. I really felt like this was exceedingly well done.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I know I only paid a buck for this, but I have to admit to being terribly disappointed.

For starters, the society isn't secret really. They wear visible (gaudy, in fact) emblems of their membership. There is not much to the society either. There is some generalized mention about initiation and the types of people they recruit, a few indications that they generally are beneficial to the community, and oh yeah... they study a lot of magic.

That's about it.

LIKED: It has a cool name, and the general concept is good.

DISLIKED: There just wasn't any substance. A Dozen Dungeon Hazards
Publisher: Ronin Arts
by Gregory H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/01/2005 00:00:00

This is the second title in the "A Dozen" series that I've tried, and to be honest, I'm thinking that I will be getting a lot more.

The topics are very focused of course, since you're only getting 12 things, but they do such a great job of fleshing those 12 things out with detail, history, and character, that it's well worth the pittance that they charge for them.

Don't expect basic traps or tripwires here... this title is about strange fogs, wall-molds, and other hard-to-categorize things that make for original quirks in a game session. And despite the title, they aren't necessarily restrictive to dungeon use.

As with the other "A Dozen" product I've purchased, the focus is on quality here, rather than quantity. You get 12 excellent fully-fleshed-out things, with enough depth of creativity to spawn all kinds of your own ideas for more...

LIKED: High quality without a lot of wasted space or excessive mechanical detail. I'm becoming very fond of the creative mind(s) behind this series.

DISLIKED: Nothing. I suppose I could whine about it's limited scope, but even that is countered: there are a boatload of titles in the series... if this one doesn't cover the topic of your choice, I'd suggest browsing their list. They just might have what you're looking for.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I loved this one. I've had mixed results buying supplements from this particular company in the past (usually revolving around editing issues), but this was quality stuff.

Now, granted, the topic is somewhat obscure to say the least. But for those who love to have treasures with real personality (without necessarily dousing the world with powerful magic and the like), this kind of thing makes for some great ideas.

The authors did a good job in keeping the number of items low in order to really address them in good detail, with lots of history and detail. It was quality over quantity, and in a nice inexpensive supplement, that's exactly what I hope to get.

Heck, even the editing was great on this one!

LIKED: If you like to incorporate art into your campaign, either as decoration or treasure, then this is a great little tool. The items inside can be used, but more importantly they are a great start for spawning limitless ideas along the theme.

DISLIKED: Some people may find the topic too limiting, but for my part, I really couldn't find anything I disliked.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
This whole thing was an outstanding concept, but I was pretty disappointed with the end product. The whole structure of the thing felt very scripted and mechanical, rather than creative or exciting... there was no 'flow' to it. The items themselves are fine, and the history segments are often intriguing, but much of it gets lost in the masses of functionality detail.

I think I was so enamored by the good idea that prompted the work, that an average production just couldn't live up to my hyped-up expectations.

LIKED: The concept is novel, and is an excellent way to keep items from being overpowered, and to use one item to spawn several quest ideas for a group.

DISLIKED: It's hard to pinpoint the exact source of my disatisfaction, but what it really seems to come down to is that the majority of the actual items just didn't grab me or hold my interest very well. There was a sense of character, or mystery, or style that seemed to be missing. It just felt like a lot of raw numbers and facts in many places.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
This wasn't a bad little tomb. It pretty much is exactly what it claims to be: a list of treasures that you can put into a campaign, and a way to make some money for a good cause at the same time.

The treasures are, in most cases, ready to use and have a bit of history and personality behind them. But the majority of it is game-play details about the items.

LIKED: I especially liked the "Where to find it" sections that chronicled the last known locations and likely fates of many of the items.

DISLIKED: It was extremely heavy in the statistical and game-play related detail. Which is great for someone who just wants items to plug into the game, but it gets a bit oppressive for folks who are more interested in getting ideas (or who like to modify everything to their own liking).

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
