The Bad Guys: an M&M Superlink Sourcebook

Short version: great writing and ideas, art and layout not so good. In all, buy!

Longer: The villains are all original and well thought out, you won't find any versions of well known comic book villains with the serial numbers filed off here. Many are a bit on the weird side, but never crossing the line into silly.

The writing is witty and light hearted, despite the often grotesque subjects. This is an enjoyable and easy read.

The art is bought from several sources and lacks consistancy. "Bad guys" also uses plenty of art from LPJ Designs Image Portfolios, available on this site, and I can't say I'm a fan of their stiff and posing style. Layout is a bit too basic, and lacks all attempts at flair. Frankly, it looks as if it's set in a word processor.

Bottom line, though, is that this is a great product, very usable, plenty of good ideas and a pleasure to read. The art and layout are minor drawbacks to an otherwise excellent job.

Good, very creative use of the M&M power construction rules and no powers that are obviously priced wrong. This booklet contains magic powers that are much more exciting than anything I'm likely to make on my own. More flavour than sorcery, and much more fun than just using Energy Blast and calling it "Eldrich Bolts".

Several useful sections, especially the "non-crunch" parts on how to run a high powered campaign and what you could possibly do when you're powerful enough to rule the world. 101 adventure ideas was also useful, and a fun read at that.

I was less satisfied with the skills and powers presented. Extreme skills are better modelled by powers in M&M and the powers are mostly stuff like Energy Blast with a lot of Area extras. I liked some of the feats though, especially the tounge-in-cheek names.

A few characters are presented, with stats and art. I found most of the concepts original and fun.

The art is passable to pretty bad, in my opinion, and suffers from terrible anathomy.

D&D Rules Cyclopedia (Basic)

This is a great version of the old boxed version of Dungeons & Dragons, which many consider superior to the later Advanced D&D version (me included).

The book is immensly compact, including the rules from all the boxes, all the way from Basic to Immortals. That's really all of it: classes, travelling rules, mass combat, skills, weapons mastery, the whole lot of D&D monsters. A few minor things (such as natural healing rules) are omitted, but those are more matters of editing mistakes than willful exclusions. Also, there are plenty of fan-made errata files on the web. You shouldn't have any trouble finding one.

The rules are pretty modular, giving you the option of having as much number crunching as you feel like. It's very possible to run this pretty rules light, while keeping to the official rules.

The only reason I'm not giving this a five with flying banners, is the scan. It's fully readable, at least if you've got good eyesight, but it's not OCR'd. This means that the file consists of image scans of every page. You can't search, copy or change anything in the text. It also makes the file huge, a whopping 79 Mb!

T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil (1e)

A great dungeon crawl adventure, definitely one of the best ever. For an adventure in that genre, it also contains ample opportunities for character interaction. That said, don't buy this if you're not interested in spending the next year or so in meandering mazes, mainly ambushing monsters and taking their stuff.

If you haven't played this, and you feel like doing some epic hack 'n slash adventuring, I can't see any reason not to get it!

This is an excellent scan. Images are crisp and the text is properly OCR'd.
