Glad someone has taken the time to create this resource. It will help players and GMs all think about these issues, maybe in ways we haven't before. With more and more gaming being done at organized play, conventions, and open tables, we often play with people we don't know well, so I can see this being a great asset. Maybe not the resource everyone needs, but if someone feels they don't need it, they can always just not buy it. For those who need it, though, this will be terrific!

The best rules-light old-school D&D-style game I've seen. In just a few pages you get everyhting you need to play. The game is distilled down to its basics. The rules have a very old-school flavor but are very new-school in spirit, everything is "player-facing" and player agency is respected. No tables or matrices; the character sheet tells you everything you need to know. Saving throws are based on your stats, combat is quick and dirty. A new "resource die" mechanic replaces tracking of rations, torches and other consumables, and monsters are abstracted into just the numbers you need. I'll be playing this a lot.

An add-on for The Jack Hack, from the same publisher. I can't help thinking of Bram Stoker's Dracula or Showtime's Penny Dreadful when I read through this. I love the new character classes and random tables. This will work together with the Jack Hack to let you create gothic horror games pretty much on the fly. I'll definitely be using this at our future game sessions!

The Cthulhu Hack

Another fine member of the Black Hack family, this time adding Cthulhu to the mix. This game would work great for any sort of investigative or pulp/noir scenario, though, and not just Lovecraftian horror. The use of the Black Hack "resource die" concept applied to investigative scenarios works well here.

A fun addition to the Black Hack family of games. If gothic horror or Victorian times are your thing you ought to check it out. The game has a neat mechanic, the White Die and the Black Die, for reflecting the outer respectability and inner torment of so many characters in this genre, from Dr.Jekyll to Sherlock Holmes. Plus there are a lot of great tables to help inspire your Whitechapel adventures. And you can't beat the price.

Death Frost Doom

This is a very attractive and well-written adventure, but unfortunately I can't recommend it. It's very atmospheric and mysterious, but the mystery doesn't give the players any clues to solve it. In the end, if they do the right thing it will by chance. If they do the wrong thing, it will be by chance. The various atmospheric elements really are there pretty much just to be weird and strange and not to contribute to the overall setting or story. All in all, very pretty, but empty, and it would be frustrating for players who expect to be able to control their destinies.

Campaign Map 1 : The Northern Kingdom
Publisher: Crooked Staff Publishing
by David H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/27/2016 09:38:01

This is a stunningly beautiful map. Not only is it artistic and well-designed from a mapmaking standpoint, it makes sense geographically, unlike many fantasy maps. What I mean is, rivers flow the way they should, mountains look like real mountain ranges, forests look like forests do on on real maps, towns are placed sensibly (by river fords, etc). There are no silly pun-based place names. There is a clear Tolkien influence in the names. The creator gives you an unlabeled versions so you can use the map for your own campaign if you prefer.

Age of Shadow : Hex Map 2
Publisher: Crooked Staff Publishing

Date Added: 06/27/2016 09:27:45

Another excellent product from Crooked Staff. Like Hex Map 1, which this map borders, this one comes in both labeled and unlabeled versions so you customize it for your own campaign or use the unlabeled maps as player handouts. The cartography is, as usual, excellent, and you could believe this is a real map- which is rare in fantasy products. Locations from the Crooked Staff "Encounters in the Northlands" scenario book are on this map. Highly recommended!

One of the best map products I've ever purchased. Worth much more than its very reasonable price. Very attractive and artistic, and also cartographically sensible. A nice touch is that it comes in an unlabeled version, so you can add your own names if you prefer and use it in a variety of settings.
