TobyArt 1: War Priests
Publisher: Postmortem Studios

Overall a very good product and resource for publication. The art is very crisp and of high quality, and most of the poses are dynamic and convey a good sense of action. My only quibble would be the heavy inking in place of color. This is not to say I expected the images to be colored, but rather that where one would expect color the images have largely been filled with black. While this makes for a great contrasting in a purely B/W image, it makes coloring the image more problematic. Other than that, two thumbs up.

What the Flash preview was too small to show me was that only 3 out of the 9 images within are finished. The remaining 6 are in various stages of development, ranging from one sketch that looks like a very rough concept drawing, to two other images that are partially inked and still partially in pencils. The former and the remaining 3 are largely useless to me as it would require me more work to fix them up to a publishable state (well, unless I want to use concept art in my products) than would be worth it. The latter two may be usable if I want to spend the time removing all the pencil artifacts (smudges, dithered lines, etc.) The fact that the three "inked" pictures are (largely) good to go as is would be, to my mind, this product's only real redeeming quality because at least I still end up with 3 usable images at under $2 each--it's just unfortunate that one of the images I bought this stock art pack was amongst one of the images I'd need to spend time retooling to use.

Summary: while some images are usable (and of good quality), the majority are not (with the last image in the pack being truly abysmal and leaving me with disbelief that I actually paid for it, even as part of a stock art pack) and it's obvious why there were not amongst those shown in the preview. Normally I try not to review other publisher's materials unless i have something good to say, but because this product is targeting other publishers rather than the core customer market, I'd feel remiss if I didn't warn off my peers from this product unless you're specifically buying it for the second, third, and/or fourth images to appear in the Flash preview.

Standard banner ad format and placement along the site's header.

LIKED: It was put up promptly and the staff was also incredibly helpful and friendly.

DISLIKED: I didn't see much of a return on it, as compared to other sites I've purchased bannera ads on, and way too many impressions were burned through with bots and spiders.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Disappointed
I've gotten a lot of use out of this font for filling borders, decorating images, and the like.

LIKED: A very decorative font that can provide lots of milage.

DISLIKED: The baseline and spacing are sometimes off, causing layout issues.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
A very useful art collection. Very clear line art.

LIKED: The images are crisp and print very cleanly. Top notch work in most of the images.

DISLIKED: Some of the images were too ... goofy ... to be used in a fantasy work. The golems looked more like robots than something one would find in a fantasy piece.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Although I've not yet had the chance to use any of the images in my projects, I look forward to doing so. Despite the somewhat cartoonish style, the detail is impressive compared to many stock art packages and I enjoyed the action poses instead of a typical "display" pose.

LIKED: Clean images dynamically drawn.

DISLIKED: Would have preferred a style more suited to the genre. Also, this package has a much lower image count than most of the others offered despite having the same price.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
I've purchased this twice so far and both times I've noticed an increase in sales for the products showing up in the impressions.

LIKED: Easy to use and purchase, and I enjoy how it is integrated into the existing MOTD system. No messy setup at all.

DISLIKED: The only thing I'd prefer is being able to indicate which of my MOTD I had show up on the first page and which remained in their categories. I would have preferred to focus on some for the front page while leaving the others in their usual rotations.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Fantasy Filler Art by Rick Hershey

Lots of different images of figures, equipment and more that can easily serve a specific need yet remain open enough to act as filler.

LIKED: Many of the images are extremely useful and I can see being used in many capacities.

DISLIKED: On the other hand, some of the images are of sub-standard quality (the draft horse and wagon stand out in my mind) and greatly contradict the quality seen in most of the other images.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
I purchased this product because some of the art was ideal for what I had in mind for Misfit Studios' upcoming products.

LIKED: Good quality art and easy to use. Most of the pieces were easily general enough to act as filler (and more) in my products.

DISLIKED: Some of the pieces were too specific for easy use. By that I mean that one can't easily use them as filler -- they actually require targeted content in the manuscript to be used, otherwise they stand out too much.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
