For months I have been looking online for a boxed games like this and have not found anything. I didn't even know stuff like this existed. I just stumbled into this web-site and couldn't believe that I could get a game for such a resonable price... and exactly what I wanted! This game is a great buy. It's fast and easy to play, but the only thing that I think it lacks is the speed factor. Like having to have enough speed to do a maneuver and stuff like that. I still think that this game is a very good purchase. I most heartily recommend it.

REVIEW: There is always a place for games which are simple, complete and based on an interesting subject. With Blazing Jets, FJGaming brings these ideas to the combat between NATO and Warsaw Pact air forces, providing a game which is quick and enjoyable. The download comes complete with all necessary maps, counters, charts and statistics. The basic game uses one or two aircraft per side which manoeuvre on a square grid map within a small number of height bands. In other words, the planes very quickly move into range of each other and then use tactics to shoot down the opposition without offering a target in return. Advanced rules include such complications as airstrips, aircraft carriers, helicopters and civilian craft. These are all handled sensibly and will not slow down the game unnecessarily. Above all, the game focuses on the actions of the fighter planes themselves and this makes sure the pace is maintained ? the scale is such that ground units do not move at all and exist mostly as targets to shoot at ? great fun!

The manoeuvres that planes can undertake are at the heart of the system and 20 are listed. As has been seen in other games, including FJGaming?s own Barmy Biplanes, the starting square and orientation and the ending square and orientation are clearly shown and it is easy for planes to move simultaneously. It is also very easy to play the game solitaire just by rolling a dice for which manoeuvre the enemy plane or planes conduct. Additional suggestions provide ways of expanding the action to the Gulf War and Vietnam War and it would not be difficult to expand to other possible actions. A space combat game would also be possible with these rules.

All in all, this is an excellent bargain and a fine game which, while seeming to cover most of the complexities of aerial warfare in the 1970s-90s, does not over-complicate the issue. It will suit anyone games player looking for a short and fun effort at shooting other players out of the sky. Those who are experts in modern aeronautics and who would prefer more complexity can probably add their own to this basic game engine.

I was really looking forward to this ruleset after purchasing Biplane Barmy.

I am glad it has been placed in the board game section where it really makes a mark as an excellent product. it definately is more of a board game than a wargame. Blazing Jets includes basic rules to get you straight into the game but there are heaps of advanced rules too.

The Author has put a lot of extra features into the rules that make this more than just a time filler. Although the rules are meant to use generic aircraft, I believe there is a lot of scope for a more realistic approach to the game.

I would definately recommend this product.

LIKED: The game is quick and easy but still fun with simple recordkeeping.

DISLIKED: There really isn't anything wrong with this product. The only suggestion I could possibly make is to add some color, but you really are getting your moneys worth anyway.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
This game is actually a board game/mini's game cross. I plan to buy some of the 4"-6" long, metal, jet models, available at toy stores everywhere, to make it somewhat more fun, and miniatures oriented. The game, as printed, uses counters to represent your planes; they move across terrain boards consisting of squares. The game plays out as a 2-D game, but this could easily be tweaked for a true, 3-D effect, similar to Red Baron (a WWI aerial combat, 3-D game).

The price is superb, the game mechanics are simple, but complex enough, with the more advanced rules, and it will play rather quickly. I highly recommend it. The fun, for the money, is superb. Cheers!

This is an excellent, simple, jet miniatures game. It plays fast and bloody. It's not the most realistic aircraft combat game in the world, but that's not the point. The design is elegant and very easy to learn, yet covers all aspects of modern air combat. The publisher has even put up a set of optional rules on his website that allow you to put more realism into the game. Well worth the money, the inkjet ink, and the time.

My gaming group was looking for a fast playing, fun air combat game as a diversion between other games. What we got was a fast playing, fun air combat game that we play INSTEAD of other games. This was certainly a pleasant surprise!

If you are looking for an ultra-detailed, super-realistic game, you're probably looking in the wrong place. The game was designed as a fast-paced game that gives the feel of modern combat. In that it suceeds admirably. The system revolves around the MANEUVER CHART which shows the allowed maneuvers and doubles as a damage chart as well. A very clever mechanic that is esy to pick up. Movement is simultaneous which allows for some agonizing decisions each turn. Missle fire is deadly (as it should be), but getting a lock-on is not as easy as it appears. There are rules for pilot experience, random missions, and Vietnam era planes as well. All in all a nice package.

The game is not perfect, however, though my gripes are minor.

First, the counters are black-n-white line drawings. They look good, but I wish that color counters had been included in the package.

Second, there is a good selection of NATO/WARSAW PACT planes, but in some cases they lack individuality. Functionally there is no diffrence between an F16 and an F18. This is not to say that all the planes are cookie-cutter, but there are some instances of this. Luckily the game is VEEEERY easy to tinker with, and my group set immediately to modifying plane characteristics.

The customer support from FJ Gaming is excellent. The one rule question I had was answered very quickly, and the designer is very responsive to new ideas. He's even offered to post some of our optional rules on the FJ Gaming website. All in all a great company to deal with.

Thanks Robert, I'm responding to this review way after it was posted, having finally gotten round to it. For anyone thinking of buying it, a selection of optional rules can be downloaded free from the website, FJGaming.com/freebies.htm, some of which were donated by Robert and others.
