A Dozen Masterwork Weapons

The usual high standards of production enhance a collection that includes not only individual weapons, but several interesting alternative ways to use the masterwork rules, such as the Dwarven Standard Issue Shortsword.

Some of the mechanics and costs are non-standard, particularly Ilsdnal's Bow. The values added in for "artistry" and "historical value" are about as arbitrary as you might expect.

The introduction argues for a significant change to the placement of masterwork and magical weapons that I don't find compelling. This space could have been better used.

A waste of money, even at the moderate price. There are no weapon illustrations (although that itself is not terribly surprising given the price); however the descriptions of the weapons are very limited, certainly no more than what a busy GM would concoct 'off-the-cuff', whereas what we look for in a commercial product is some thought and detail so we don't HAVE to operate 'off-the-cuff'.

As a further oddity, the list includes weapons which are broken. Apparently, the idea is you get a broken masterpiece weapon, lug it to the local smith, and presto! the weapon is restored as a masterpiece.

I can't recommend this product-you can come up with material as good while you're waiting for your players to arrive.

LIKED: Nothing.

DISLIKED: It provided no depth or detail.

QUALITY: Poor

VALUE: Ripped Off
I really liked this PDF - the idea behind it is great, and I liked the weapons presented. However, if you're running a campaign where magical weapons are plentiful, and where most PCs get their first magic weapon at first or second level this PDF will probably offer you little. This PDF gives you, the DM, the opportunity to present the players with weapons that are individual and that have a history, but that aren't magical. This would probably be most useful in a low-magic campaign.

Great takem and throw em in your campaign Weapons. Some of them have really interesting backgrounds and could spark adventures all on their own. Perfect for the DM who is either Lazy as i am or just pressed for time or needs some fresh inspiration.

A very good product, especially if you're running a low-magic campaign. It has always irked me that magical weapons in (A)D&D have been so bland while at the same time they are the most wished-for item by low-level characters. With this PDF I can give my player characters a interesting primary weapon at low-levels as well as a interesting secondary weapon at higher levels.

I do like Philip J Reed's stuff, it's always the same sort of thing I try to do in my own campaigns, add little details, here and there which make things special, and give players ownership of part of the story.

A dozen weapons with background idea's to spark you or your players off on further adventures, and it's cheap. What more could you ask?

Pictures possibly, but that's just because I have no artistic talent, and that's what the Artifacts of the Arcane series is for.

/Phil

If you're a stingy DM then you probably will like this product! If you aren't, then you'll still like this product! The items featured here will not only give you something to give out that isn't magic, they can be ustilzed to further enhance your campaign world with a little bit of history. Just the thing to make your pesky Bard characters/players very happy!

This is a nice collection of non-magical weapons. There is one unique item from the dozen, the other 11 are rather uncommon. They all have a detailed background and can spice up any campaign.

Excellent addition for the game master with jaded players. Just the thing to add something new to an adventure and surprise your PCs.
