Vehicle Handbook
Publisher: Mongoose
by Christopher R. [Verified Purchaser]

Lots of great options. From bicycles to massive anti-grav battleships, if you can invision it you can build it. The system is easier to follow then the one for spaceships (High Guard), but then again a minivan isn't as complicated as a starship.

My main complaint is the example vehicles don't go tell you how many spaces are being used for crew/passengers. The book suggests 1–5 (or more) per person, but the exact number isn't given for the examples.

A great adventure whos character's actions make sense, and not just "I'm evil, BWAHAHAHA!" With mutiple ending options and wonderful characterizations, this is a must-have for anyone who wants to add a bit of creepy to any games.

Shadow of the Demon Lord
Publisher: Schwalb Entertainment
by Christopher R. [Verified Purchaser]

The is the best d20-based game I've played in, well, forever. The simple mechanics bely a great underlying system of nuance and almost total control.

I very much enjoy rolling more than just a d20—I like small handfuls of dice, and the boon/bane system works wonderfully. Also, the path system of choosing where your character grows is awesome. The world is grimdark, an homage to Warhammer Fantasy, but with enough hope that it won't turn out like Warhammer 40K :p

Shadow of the Demon Lord is a modern retelling of the fantasy gaming genre, with every nuanced aspect of what classic fantasy games did examined and mutated to fit a role playing game, instead of the wargaming roots of old. Initiative, class, race, weapon damage, exploration, even magic has been gone over with a fine-tooth comb—and the results are amazing!

Gone are the long laundry list of skill. No longer does each non-attack roll have different difficulty number. Initiative rolls that don't allow the characters to do what they're good at are long gone. A simple to understand rule set is used to bring out the fun, not the math (yes, math can be fun, but not for everyone).

Jadetech: Red Jade
Publisher: Reroll Productions
by Christopher R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/04/2014 14:44:03

As the second installment of the Jadetech series, Red Jade has some very big shoes to fill, following Green Jade. Green jade is versatile and widely used, while red jade is more specific in its uses. Overall, the book is really well done, with the high quality writing and art that I've come to expect from Reroll Productions. If you've read Green Jade, the introduction to Red Jade will be a pleasant surprise, and if you haven't read Green Jade, you should.

The history and evolution of how red jade was found and first used is great for story fodder, and excellent background that helps you delve deeper into the history of the world. Even small things like how powdered red jade was originally used as gunpowder and later turned into solid-state cartridges shows how the ingenuity of the peoples of Jadepunk are striving to make things better.

The assets provided are just what one would expect from a book about explosive jade: guns and grenades. Surprisingly, there is a red jade melee weapon, and a mastercrafted bow for playing violin. The last one goes to show how red jade can be used for emotional expression, and lets you know that it's not all about blowing stuff up.

However, I was disappointed in the lack of red jade infusions. I may have read too much Harry Dresden, but the two infusions I was hoping to see didn't even warrant a mention: a lust potion, and a potion of energy—after all, red jade is the jade of courage and power. Besides, Red Jadebull potion is just too good a name to pass up!

The lack of infusions is the only thing preventing a 5 out of 5 review. The rest of the book is awesome, and exactly what I expected and wantrf from the red jade book. Definitely a positive addition to my digital "bookshelf."

Jadetech: Green Jade

A 16 page booklet for only $2.99? Even if I wasn't a Jadepunk fan the low price and attractive cover art would make this an impulse buy. But I am a fan of Jadepunk, so it's a must-have!

Jacob Possin knocked the writing out of the park on this one! There is so much history and setting detail contained in this booklet it's insane. The properties and histories in just the sidebars alone are worth the price of admission!

Not to mention the jade-tainted creatures! Both "natural" tainted due to long-term exposure and the equivalent of genetic engineering, if you want to upgrade your guard dog, green jade is the way to go. Side note, mad props for including rodents of exceptional stature!

It also contains quite a few green jade assets. From lightsabers to Thor's hammer to the shirshu from Avatar: The Last Airbender, it's got it all! Oh, I almost forgot the green jade potions. I like how the flaws are listed as "based off of asset creation roll." Way to remind me that potions are created during play, not by paying refresh!

Ryan does a great job of breaking down how aspects have evolved in the past decade, and several alternate methods of choosing your character's aspects. It's a rare look into the designer's brain and the mindset that went into refreshing the heart of Fate!

Venture City • A Superpunk Sourcebook for Fate Core
Publisher: Evil Hat Productions
by Christopher R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/11/2014 13:15:17

Venture City is exactly what Fate needed for a supers suppliment! It has a solid framework for buliding super powers as a collection of stunts, with rules for power drawbacks and even more powerful versions that cause collateral damage.

In addition, it has a vibrant and decidedly grey world for the supers to llive in. It's populated with places and faces, current and impending issues, and organizaitons with their own write-up and stats! It even comes with an into adventure to run that draws upon two of the given issues and all of the places and faces.

All in all, it's a beautifully done supers game that is just begging for play.
