I had high hopes for this product, but they were not completely fulfilled. For starters, I very much dislike the way the detailed breakdown of different weapon parts was handled - while useful from a historical sense, I think they stretch the game mechanics too far. The ability to add multiple bonuses to a sword without the cost of magically enchanting a blade, seems to be a major game balance issue.

I very much liked the prestige classes from a flavor standpoint, but wasn't thrilled with them mechanically. Most of them seemed, to me, to be inferior to the standard duellist, as presented in the DMG (3.5).

I think that really sums it up - good flavor, mediocre crunch.

The art was pretty good, too, particularly the cover.

If you are buying this book looking for a stand-in for the Duelist, this book is going to do little for you. The Duelist is a "vanilla" PrC purposely designed to fit the common assumptions of the stereotype. We don't do things like that. Why would rapier fighting be standard everywhere? Thats certainly what the Duelist presents. I'll reiterate again, if you're looking for a supercharged rogue, this book is not for you. If you want to add some style into your swashbuckling, perhaps you should consider this.

Absolutely brimming with swashbucklery goodness.

Three very thinly disguised historical schools (covering French, Spanish and Italian schools of fighting) Two unhistorical ones one a semi-English Faerie fantasy school, the other a very interesting take on how paladins would operate in a gothic horror fantasy realm (a la Ravenloft)

Lots of technical and historical data on rapiers and fencing, and the obligatory D20 crunchy bits. The layout is pretty good, if a little ordinary, but everything is easy to read (unlike some PDFs out there)

If you're a GM looking to run a more swashbuckling game, this is an absolute must buy. If like me you're a player whose milquetoast bard has gone the Weapon Finesse w Rapier route, then buy your GM a copy and start dropping hints.

An interesting little tome on fencing, dueling, and the like. Not quite as historical as I would have liked, but full of all sorts of tricks for would-be Duellists!

The highlights of this book are the descriptive sections, as each could provide a DM with a regional setting. In addition, the discussions of fencing and the terms used are very useful to any campaign that may include raipers. The rules sections (feats, spells, PC's, etc.) are a hit and miss collection. Some of the ideas are well thought out, while others could very easily be abused, due to their unbalanced nature. Overall, I am very pleased that I purchased this PDF and I will look for future products from Heyoka.

And I was lucky enough to win a free copy of Facades!
