I have been wanting to try one of this vendor's products for quite a while. I finally took the plunge and I am not disappointed. I got a bunch of mates together to help print and cut out the game. (6 players reduces the workload immensely!)After a few false starts we managed to get the hang of the rules (all 16 pages of them!)and settled down for a great night of gaming. We all enjoyed the different races and swapped between them all night. The variety of ships and strategies make this game very replayable. At 4-6 players the game is lots of fun. I haven't tried it with less, so I cannot comment. Although not pleasing to all, this game has definately got a following in my group and will be played again.<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: Excellent artwork for all the races. A great variety of races to choose from. A ruleset that has some depth and strategy and isn't just tacked on.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: No instructions on how to print the cards. Empty space on some of the printouts that wastes paper. Paper size is letter, it has not been standardized for Letter or A4. Some of the rules aren't explained clearly and need a little trial and error to resolve (They did become clear it just took playing the game to get it right!!)<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

A Sky Full of Ships

ASFoS is the best large fleet action game I have played. The rules are easy to understand and rely on simple mechanics for gameplay. There is heaps of support for the game at the yahoo group and various websites. The rules are generic enough to adapt to any background you are likely to encounter, but not that generic that you lose flavour. Turns consist of a movement phase, combat phase and the turn end. You require normal D6 dice (two different colors), rulers and miniatures. You also need Ship displays to keep track of damage. The rules come with some sample ship counters and their displays. The Yahoo Group has a Ship Generator for creating your own ship displays. You can play scenarios or "Even points battles" (called pickup games).

If you want large actions with lots of ships on the table, you can not go past ASFoS!<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: The fast easy gameplay with large amounts of ships on the board. The large range of advanced rules to help flesh out your background. The ability to design your own ship types. The way you can start simple but progress to more involved rules and gameplay. <br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: The Rulebook is a bit plain. Black and white graphics and the standard document style don't make it enticing for a new player. <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Button Wars: Tactical Spaceship Combat Game

Exactly as the blurb describes it, "a great sampler for the Button Wars game system." It has some inovative ideas that require the use of the plastic buttons, although the card copies were reasonably effective. For the price, I would recommend purchasing it, and evaluating its worth yourself.<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: It gives you an excellent idea of what the full game is about, while not hobbling it too much. The price is excellent value for what you get. 9 pages of rules, 7 pages of minis.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: I think some of the movement and combat rules are average. They could have put a bit more work into it. The artwork is a bit simplistic for the playing pieces <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Disappointing<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

The Blurb says it all! The only thing I can add is: "Believe everything you hear about this game!" "No-one is exagerating or toning down any problems!"<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: It plays really well, better than a lot of other rulesets that cover skirmish battles. The book is also easy to read and search through (a must for the first few games.) <br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: This isn't really a dislike but . . . the rules are very detailed and a few games need to be played before you will get on top of them all. This may cause new players to criticize the game initially.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

Dying Lights

You get a comprehensive ruleset that allows for different game styles including campaigns and battles. There is the opportunity for customisation and larger multiplayer games.

Eveything is covered in detail, from setting up and choosing forces to individual battles and using the cards.

It includes rule clarifications and what I consider a bonus - Battle tactics for the new player, to help them have a good experience the first time they do battle.

There is only one set of battlegroup cards to represent the ships in your fleet. A bit more variety based on factions would make the play area look more varied however using the same cards enables your opponents to recognise your forces easily without you having to explain what every card is.

The Battle mechanics are easy and intuitive. They rely on tactics and good card use rather than blind luck. The Combat cards add variety and tactics. You will find a lot of the old staples (defensive screens, assaults etc.)available by effective use of these cards.<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: A really intricate, well supported and thought out background. If it is not original it is definately not common. It helps to set the atmosphere and backs up the reasoning behind some of the game mechanics.

There is a wide variety of cards that are very colorful and pleasing to the eye. The overall effect is very professional with the graphics accurately portraying what the card is used for.

The factions are varied and cover a wide variety of classes, from evil villians to misunderstood "bad guys", Faithful protectors to the agressive underdog. The concepts and strategies used are excellent.

There are multiple ways to achieve victory, meaning you have to follow your opponents every move, an attribute of usually much more complex game systems. <br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: There are no instructions on the number of cards you need to print to play a game. You can filter through the rules and work it out but it would be nice to have something included at least in the Quick start rules. The compression used for the card graphics makes some of the text very hard to read. A bit of guesswork may be required for a few. <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Blazing Jets

by Shaun A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/16/2004 00:00:00

I was really looking forward to this ruleset after purchasing Biplane Barmy.

I am glad it has been placed in the board game section where it really makes a mark as an excellent product. it definately is more of a board game than a wargame. Blazing Jets includes basic rules to get you straight into the game but there are heaps of advanced rules too.

The Author has put a lot of extra features into the rules that make this more than just a time filler. Although the rules are meant to use generic aircraft, I believe there is a lot of scope for a more realistic approach to the game.

I would definately recommend this product.<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: The game is quick and easy but still fun with simple recordkeeping.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: There really isn't anything wrong with this product. The only suggestion I could possibly make is to add some color, but you really are getting your moneys worth anyway. <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Biplane Barmy
Publisher: FJ Gaming
by Shaun A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/20/2004 00:00:00

I have to admit I was a bit dubious about purchasing this game after looking at the demo rules. Gladly my doubts were unfounded. The real rules are way better than the demo set.

The game is exactly as the blurb describes it - fast and furious - and definately playable. A lot of thought has gone into converting the details of WWI aerial combat into a game that is fun but with simple recordkeeping.

Biplane Barmy includes basic rules to get you straight into the game but there are heaps of advanced rules too. These include shooting, bombing, rockets, clouds and balloons just to name a few. There is a simple but effective campain system and a mission generator. You get counters, a demo map, Player reference sheets, Aircraft data, Air Services data and a Glossary of WWI slang for a bit of fun while playing the game -"I got in a right funk when Archie arrived and then me typwriter jammed".

The Author has put a lot of extra features into the rules that make this more than just a time filler. Although the rules are meant to use generic aircraft, there is a lot of scope for a more realistic approach to the game. I guess 38 pages is drawing near to the optimum size of a downloadable game and he wanted to keep it simple. To be honest it is only a small gripe and more than outweighed by the quality of the rest of the game.

I would definately recommend this product to anyone who likes WWI gaming.

Clash of Steel Miniatures Rules Published Version 2.0
Publisher: Youngdale Productions
by Shaun A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/20/2004 00:00:00

I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this ruleset. I purchased it a while back with some other generic rulesets and didn't print & read it because the format seemed a bit Bleah! However after some coaxing from a friend, we sat down a played a game between two fantasy armies. We were both impressed! The game flowed very smoothly and looking up rules was quick and simple, even tho' we were unfamiliar with them. Clash of Steel has all of the normal stuff like unit statistics, game sequence and combat resolution, but it also has the different racial values and special rules. It has scrolls, potions, spells, magic items, artillary, weapons, armour and dragons. It has rules for nightfighting, science fiction conversions, vehicles, buildings and creating your own aliens. All in all a comprehensive ruleset, contained in 42 pages. I haven't tried the science fiction battles but if you like fantasy gaming this is a must have!

This game didn't really inspire me when I first got it, however the blurb is totally truthful about the content of the game. If you want an in depth wargame . . look elsewhere. If you want a bit of simple fun, it delivers the goods. The artwork . . well look at the cover.

This game is good for what it is! No complaints!

This is a good little game. I think it could be presented better but the actual gameplay and rule mechanics are excellent for the price. This 2D Dungeon set includes the passages I think should have been included in the Cave Chamber module. This is a limiting factor on the usefulness of the set. Once again the artwork is simple with high detail but not too crowded. It fits in very well with the majority of the other sets in the range. There is some really inovative ideas with these nicely presented tiles and once again they are available in color and black and white. This set is a must if you purchase the Cave Chambers set.
