A long series of tables of various events (some beneficial, some dangerous) that could happen, as the title says, when a spellbook is burned. A minor rules addition to say the least, but thought-provoking.

DISLIKED: Many of the results are very strong, permanent and non-standard in d20 rules. The tables for different schools and different levels are not particularly balanced with each other in the types and strengths of effects, or relative harm or benefit that arise.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
What a fun way to spice up an adventure, let's have the Barbarian throw a Spellbook out the fire. What a clever idea.

This is an interesting idea. Giving you, as the GM, some extra power, and striking horrible pain and fear in your gruop's wizards, you JUST can't go wrong.

The book is broken up by schools of magic. Whichever school is most prevelent in the book, creates a type of affect, which can be chosen by the GM, or randomly rolled. It is a very simple mechanic to add to your game. Along with the burning, the book includes a couple of nice feats.

If you like crunchy, this book is all crunch. Not a lot of fluff to get in the way of the rules, which also keeps the size of it down. My suggestion, is getting a 3 ring binder, and put all of Phil's Forbidden Arcana in one binder, to make them easy to access.

What can I say about burning spellbooks to get power. It's different. The execution was okay but I wasn't impressed with the concept. Others may like it though.

Short though it may be, this would be a great addition to a campaign where magic is deemed to have a life of its own, rather than requiring wizards or clerics as conduits or catalysts. Plus, it will make your players more thoughtful about just how to dispose of that evil wizard's spellbook!

"Burning Spellbooks" is another in Ronin Arts' Forbidden Arcana series of D20 mini-supplements. The Forbidden Arcana series features solid plug-in rule sets dealing with some hidden secret of magic, and includes the PDFs "Magical Diseases", "Eater of the Arcane", "Necromantic Feats" and "Librum Antiquus Diablerie" as well as non-PDF offerings "Demon Vents" and "God Shadows". This PDF is my personal favorite in the series thus far. It offers a nice mechanic for my campaign's PC sorcerers to dispose of the spell books they've been collecting from defeated wizards. Of course, it's a dangerous and unpredictable mechanic, but isn't that the fun of it, really? this is magic we're talking about! If, somehow, you're unimpressed by the other Forbidden Arcana offerings, I still highly reccomend that you get this one. As always, it's a fine addition to any d20 game's repertoire, displaying Ronin Arts' typical high design standards, and featuring a price that's not to be beat.

The book says that "Each Forbidden Arcana PDF presents a new arcane secret that is designed to add some wonder back into your campaign." and in that role the book is a success.

This is ,yet again, another wonderful supplement by Phillip J. Reed that enchances on tiny facet or provides a nuance to the existing campaign. Like it says it provides information on what may happen when a spellbook is burned, it's based on what the "dominant" school of the book is and the relative level of spells in the book.

It provides roughly 18 possible effects per school with 6 per spell level range (low, medium, high), 3 new feats, and a variant for forcing a particular outcome.

Although the topic may seem extremely limited it really depends on your group. My group feels that object like a bag of trick or a wand of wonder are the most beneficial items so when a random bard had mentioned that burning spellbook lead to unpredictable results the amount of book burning skyrocketed.

Another sterling product by Mr. Reed. Like a drug dealer offering free samples to hook his clientelle, Mr. Reed's products has me hooked as well.

FA: Burning Spellbooks is another item that expands a theme and offers useful elements to any d20 game.

Who would have even thought to include this kind of mayhem in a gaming session? Philip Reed that's who!!

ANOTHER great accessory for your boring D20 games.

Buy, Buy Buy (it's cheap)

Cool topic! Definitely the thing to spring on your unsuspecting players the next time they go hurling fireballs at the evil head wizard. Could also be of use if the players found out that something extraordinary happens when you burn a spellbook.

Oh man, I am going to have so much fun with this... my players seem to think that the best way of dealing with a mage is overwhelming use of fire (magical, oil flasks, etc.)... they are in for a very very nasty suprise.

I'm certainly in favor of anything like the Forbidden Arcana series that puts a bit of uncertainty and a touch of the fantastical back into the drab magic system of D&D.

I do miss the Christopher Shy artwork but, at the price, I can't complain too much.
