Nightmares of Barovia showcases the author's great sensitivity to the old Ravenloft setting, while drawing on deep modern rules design. The product is nicely split between content a DM could use running the Curse of Strahd and content players could use creating characters for that adventure.
Players: On the player side, each of the new subclasses evokes a Gothic archetype very nicely, and the features really drive those archetypes home. The spells are well balanced and support these archetypes. Want to play a Vistani? There are solid rules for that. Want to have a pact with the Dark Powers? You can do that if you're brave (or foolish) enough. Everything jumps off the page with flavor! While the design is mostly solid, it's clear some playtesting is needed to find the right balance. Players who enjoy deeper, more complex mechanics will be right at home with features like Information Network and Eldritch Wards that each span roughly a page long. Were it not for those questions of balance, this would easily be a 5-star product.
DMs: The DM's content is just phenomenal, and I was surprised at how much is there for a product billed towards players. Jeremy's demi-human vampires are a fresh take that feels spot on for Barovia, and his application of the pseudonatural template to create the Black Hound feels like entirely new monster.
Summary: This material is easily worth more than the selling price! If you're running a Barovian campaign or a horror game, this is probably a must buy. Just bear in mind you'll need to do a bit of playtesting. Fortunately, the authory is very responsive to updating his products when something needs tweaking. A fantastic product and a great author to support.
