101 Divine Spell Components

101 Divine Spell Components is a pdf done by Philip Reed. He has done a few books in this series of 101. Each book has a specific focus and is very detailed. The 101 Divine Spell Components deals with new types of components clerics can use to enhance their spells. While it is 101 Divine Spell Components it seems really designed for the Cleric class. The divine components are categorized under the domains presented in the 3.0 players hand book and are used to enhance spells of that particular domain. A little work will need to be done to open these components up to Druids, Paladins, and Rangers. The pdf is 33 pages in length and as with most of Philip Reed?s books it is packed with information. The whole book is considered open game content, so it is a great source for people looking to use these ideas elsewhere. Like many of his books, this one is illustrated by Christopher Shy. The art is has great style to it and the pictures really serve to help the book flow. The pdf is well formatted making it easy to read at the computer. It is full color so it might eat a little bit of ink when printed. The components are highly varied. It can be a strong wind, the birth of an animal, or even the death of someone near by. There are also the more usual things like Trolls Heart or a specific type of plant. The components can be learned by a knowledge Religion check, but the text also suggests that they are better learned as a reward or after a quest. The components are also not automatically successful. One usually has to make a spellcraft roll to succeed, and a natural one on the roll always fails as well has having a negative effect. Some of the components add an amazing amount of power to the spell. Some do so at a cost like Angel?s Fury which triples are variables of the caster but also does 5d6 damage to him. Others like Powdered Blood just increase the damage by 1d8 per caster level (maximum 10d8) at no additional penalty. The DM should take care and make sure the components he wishes to use will not drastically affect the game, but in most cases sine the NPCs as well as the PCs should have access to this it should be okay. 101 Divine Spell Components can add a lot of interesting variations to a divine spellcaster. There are many opportunities for adventures to locate the knowledge of some of these components as well as the additional hardships of actually acquiring them once one figure out what a certain component is. They can also make a great reward for a divine spellcaster from their god of choice.

Always love all of Phil Reeds stuff... he is so creative in the things he comes up with to enhance your D20 game... I like to print out all my PDFs and bind them... I would recommend not having a full color table of contents anymore since I could never get the cover and contents page to run thru my printer

I always get the feeling he could do 201 or 1001 if he really wanted to. This is another must buy in my opinion.

Whether you use these for an extar oomph or for access to a special spell or two, these 101 components should be in your game.

GREAT!!

Nothing much to add that hasn't already been said. This is another useful product in the 101 series that adds a bit of flavor back into the drab D&D magic system.

With that said, as has been mentioned before, some of the components in here are REALLY powerful in the effects they grant (i.e. casting as a 20th level caster) - just be careful what you do and don't allow in your game!

I love the whole 101 series, but I especially like the spell component books. It puts alot of flexibility into the magic system without upsetting the apple cart in the process.

If you're looking to put some magic back into your spells, this book should interest you.

I loved the 101 Spell Components. This product just feeds and expands on it. It really gave my players something to chew on, and added a lot more spice to the game. Suddenly casting a healing spell wasn't quite as routine. Anything that breaks the monotony, and brings back some of the exotic flavor of spellcasting to the DnD magic system is welcome in my book, and, as usual I heartily indorse this project. Then again, I'm a Stuido Ronin, and Phillip Reed Junkie, so there you go. Still that said, I really dont think you can be disapointed wiht this product.

101 divine components isn't unique in its genre, there is also 101 arcane components :)

Though this kind of book comes only from Philip J. Reed, so a bit of explanation might be useful:

This book feature components to be added in the casting of a spell, those component then provoke side effect: increased range, temporary special ability to be used later like lay on hand, etc...

It's advised that knowing how to use a component is best handled through roleplaying, though a knowledge(religion) DC is porvided for each component. alongside value, description and weight.

The component itself increase the casting time, and a spellcraft roll is required to make it effective (and a natural 1 can have bade side effect).

The components are each separated by clerical domain and to be used alongside domain spell, a miscelanous category of components is included which can be used on any divine spell.

All components are interesting, from the death of an aerial servant for the Air domain to the heart of a metalic dragon for the Evil domain.

The plus that make a big difference in PDF: the presentation is very good, and illustrations are top notch

Personally I love all the 101 books, they've all had aplethora of useful idea's I've stolen. There are some power issues (ie potential for Munchkinism) with some components (1 or 2 per book), but as Im the GM and the only person to buy this stuf, no problem, dont show the players.

So, whats next?

This was another great idea they have put out there. I really like adding things of this nature to the game. By casting a spell of weather or storm in a storm or the like your spell is boosted by your diety as well other things all with a divine bent to them. I have already begun using these as treasures for the party, which they make great use of. In my campaign which is magic poor these are a great addition
