Hilarious and serious, ugly and cute, good and evil. Hagmalgams is a land of contrasts in the best way possible. James's game design is in peak form, as is Kayla's inimitable art style.

Calimshan Adventurer's Guide

A simply fantastic setting project for an underexplored part of the realms. Beyond a simple update of existing material, this setting is a reimagining of Calimshan, much in the way that an official Wizards of the Coast product would take steps to update a setting before publishing an official book. Splendid!

Mordenkainen's Tome of Marvelous Magic
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/09/2019 20:46:43

Recently, I've started to grow bored with the magic item selection in the Dungeon Master's Guide. There are only so many times I can hand out a bag of tricks before things start to feel old hat. Mordenkainen's Tome of Marvelous Magic was exactly what I needed. This book only has wondrous items in here, so while this isn't for you if you're seeking a new suit of enchanted armor or a new legendary sword, all of the items here are quirky, fun, and fantastically thoughtful. It's worth every penny.

Red Jack: A Gothic Earth Adventure
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/30/2019 20:54:19

Red Jack is an adventure with all the usual style, panache, and polish of an M.T. Black release, with something that puts it just a slight cut above the rest: its setting. For an author so firmly established in classic D&D traditions, exploring the decidedly non-S&S streets of London takes guts. It also takes some not-insignificant tweaks to the core rules of D&D, all of which work quite smoothly. Is this an adventure for a first-time D&D group? Probably not. Is this an adventure for a D&D group that wants something a little bit different without moving outside of the D&D rules? Absolutely.

Ravnican Races Expanded - Weird Edition
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/26/2019 14:37:54

These races live up to the title of "weird." They're not for every campaign, and some races have traits that could make them hard to balance in campaigns not tailored to them. The Spirit race's ability to incorporeally travel through physical barriers, for instance, can trivialize traditional dungeon exploration. Other races are just cool to offer; the Gorgon [Medusa] race is exceptionally interesting, as is the Faerie race.

Ravnican Races Extended

A fantastic race expansion, useful for anyone playing a game set in Ravnica! For its cost, having seven new Magic: The Gathering races to play with is a great deal. Each race's racial traits are flavorful, and balance is good on the whole. One small criticism is: I think the homunculus could use a little extra oomph; right now, it's being outclassed by the variant human... though in fairness, the variant human might be a bit overpowered to begin with.

The Malady Workshop
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/06/2019 01:26:16

While marred by some blurry images and slightly awkward graphic design, the content of this book is fantastic. Diseases are an anemic part of the fifth edition ruleset, and it's easy to see why: they're unsatisfying to fight in a game of heroic fantasy! This book deftly leaps over this hurdle by couching its new rules in the context of a wizard hellbent on slaying adventurers by the thousands with epidemic contagions.

This book gets slightly more technical than I'd like in my fantasy by using modern medical terms rather than medieval medical jargon. While this shows off the authors' scientific pedigree, I would be hard pressed to find anyone in a D&D world with knowledge this precise. Nevertheless, this book is brimming with techniques to create realistic and complex diseases, complete with methods of transmission and cures.

The Malady Workshop is a useful tool for any Dungeon Master interested in creating inventive and perfidious diseases. I only wish its presentation were a bit tighter, but that won't stop me from giving it five stars. Great work!

Death in the Cornfields
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/07/2016 12:03:29

This is a clean, simple, and emotional adventure. It's subject matter—a family of regular folk in a bad way—sets up the tone of quiet horror and despair necessary for a Ravenloft adventure (though Cornfields can be used outside of Barovia as well). Its striking imagery—the scarecrow in the cornfield, the beheaded teenagers—gives the DM a lot to work with. A little more information on the characters wouldn't have gone amiss, but having too little information is far preferable to the adventure being bloated and unusable as a play aid. Little touches like "[The wedding ring] would have been Elias’s" give the adventure enough character to make it a welcome addition to anyone's DMs Guild library.

If I had to nitpick, it's that a party of four 4th-level PCs should be more than a match for a single CR 5 vampire spawn, nullifying the need for DM note at the end.

Dhampir - Playable Race
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2016 22:52:25

A timely product. Anyone looking to play Curse of Strahd a la Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would be well-served by this race. I look forward to more by this designer.

I was disappointed that the artist—Matt Morrow—wasn't credited in the PDF itself! He is credited on the product page, but not including him in the PDF seems like a mistake. Other than that, this product's only flaws are minor editing errors (capitalizing "Gnome" in the middle of a sentence, etc.). Very good!

Fully-loaded is right! For people who love character sheets with all the buttons and dials 3.5, Pathfinder, and 4e sheets had, this is the real deal. It's a little over-loaded for my taste, but I know plenty of gamers who will love this sheet.

Frozen Castle - Expanding Tyranny of Dragons
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/01/2016 01:43:40

An excellent sandbox! This section of the Forgotten Realms isn't often detailed, and Alexander Winter does it with style. The different factions in this adventure are all well-presented, with clear motivations and methods to achieve them. The final showdown is an excellent battle, and is presented with just enough detail to give a DM creative control over the combat. I wish the Skyreach Castle map were reprinted here so I didn't have to refer back to Hoard of the Dragon Queen to run this battle, and I also wish the castle's "control panel" had appeared in Hoard of the Dragon Queen or Rise of Tiamat, but these are minor complaints at most.

If anyone from Kobold Press is reading this, there are a few small editing/formatting errors inside!

  • pg. 6 "If the cloud giant Blagothkus...". "Cloud giant" shouldn't be italicized here.
  • pg. 6 "...his remains and the matching bracelet can be found in Arauthator's iceberg in the Tyranny of Dragons: Hoard of the Dragon Queen episode "The Sea of Moving Ice." This one's a little confusing, as the "Tyranny of Dragons" heading isn't applied to Hoard of the Dragon Queen elsewhere in the text. Also, Arauthator's iceberg is in Rise of Tiamat, not Dragon Queen!

Pedantic quibbles aside, this adventure is a welcome addition to DMs Guild, and is a MUST-BUY for anyone playing Tyranny of Dragons.

Outstanding Objects: Printable Item Cards
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/26/2016 18:19:30

The idea here is excellent, and deserves 4 stars all on its own. The design of the cards themselves is excellent for people without access to a double-sided printer, and the guide provided is clear and very usable.

The items are fine. I don't run a steampunk or Victorian-era game, which these are perfectly suited for, so I won't get too much use out of the presentation or style. (And in a pack of item cards, presentation is everything!) I wish the text were easier to understand; the game text is written in the same in-universe style as the descriptive text, which isn't conducive to use in-game. Certain presentation issues, such as improper spell formatting (Druidcraft instead of druidcraft, for instance) make this product feel more like homebrew than an official supplement.

The ideas here are great, and I'd love to see another fantasy-themed Outstanding Objects in the future.

Archons - World Builder Blog Presents
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/19/2016 12:18:11

This supplement is short and sweet, with three classic celestials ready for use in-game. These three are mechanically on-par with other creatures in the Monster Manual. Like with James' Catastrophic Dragons monster collection, some formatting and presentation issues drag this piece down, but the quality of the game content here is excellent.

Catastrophic Dragons - World Builder Blog Presents
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by James H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/19/2016 12:11:24

Very good monsters! Solid mechanics—everything I've come to expect from James' work on worldbuilderblog and on EN5ider. Some small typos can be found, "Auqan" instead of "Aquan," "burrow 15ft." instead of "15 ft.," but these don't distract from the quality of the dragons. I'd prefer some tighter formatting, such as the colored border of the stat blocks being in-line with other text columns, and less blurry pictures.

This supplement definitely plays it safe; all dragons fall into the age category/CR mold we've seen in the Monster Manual, but mechanics like their Catastrophic Aura keep things fresh. I'm looking forward to more creatures!

Gallery of Blackstone
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by joey H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/16/2016 13:01:19

The concept for this adventure is coherent and good for a starting adventure, but is unfortunately undercut by mediocre writing, poor editing, and strange formatting. The adventure's simplicity is its best quality; I can imagine a first-time DM crafting an adventure very much like this for first-time players as a way for them all to learn how to play D&D. Because of this, the adventure also suffers from mechanical pitfalls common to new DMs, such as the puzzle that can only be solved by a player rolling well. Fortunately, the puzzle is not essential to completing the dungeon, but the players have no agency in solving the puzzle; keen observation and good play will not help them in solving it, only a high Intelligence score.

The team at EighteenOneHundred seems to be dedicated to improving and creating better adventures, and I wish them success in the future.
